NEWRY, ME (Feb. 24) - U.S. Snowboarding’s snowboardcross and alpine athletes will close out February’s World Cups as the Visa U.S. Snowboarding Cup makes its stop at Sunday River, featuring parallel giant slalom, snowboardcross and a team SBX exhibition Feb. 26-28.
NBC will broadcast the event March 7 at 2 p.m. ET and Versus will re-air it at 5 p.m. ET the same day.
“This will be the first time Sunday River is hosting a snowboarding World Cup and we are excited for our athletes to be able to compete at a new venue,” U.S. Snowboarding Program Director Jeremy Forster said.
The weekend kicks off with the alpine crew looking to take the podium in the U.S.
“Being able to compete in Sunday River on our own turf is very important for the athletes mentally. When you feel like you have the home court advantage it feels like it’s our race and we need to show them what we can do,” U.S. Snowboarding Alpine Head Coach Steve Persons said.
World Cup winners Michelle Gorgone (Boston), Adam Smith (Bend, OR) and Chris Klug (Aspen, CO) will all be on hand to battle the competition in Sunday River.
Next up, U.S. snowboardcross athletes are ready to dominate for the home crowd with the likes of five-time X Games gold medalist Nate Holland (Squaw Valley, CA) Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, VT), who holds the record for most SBX World Cup wins of any athlete male or female, World Championship bronze medalist Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) and Olympic gold medalist, not to mention native Mainer, Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, ME).
“I’m super stoked. For me it is going to be fun. It will be the first time I will have been able to race a professional snowboardcross in Maine. I have a bunch of friends and family coming and that always seems to do me well with giving me good energy and getting me on the podium,” Wescott said. “I’m fired up. I know there are certain places I like to race and getting to do it on home turf will be a whole new level of motivation that I haven’t necessarily had.”
The snowboardcross race is also the final stop on the Visa U.S. Snowboardcross Championship Series. Following the finals, scores will be tallied and the male and female U.S. SBX Champions will be named. Jacobellis and Holland won the first event of the series and are looking to do the same in Maine.
Following an awesome win by Jacobellis and Callan Chythlook-Sifsof in the inaugural team SBX exhibition last season, the sport makes its second appearance as an exhibition in Sunday River Saturday following the snowboardcross World Cup.
“Everyone is really excited to go to Sunday River. This is the second time we will have done team SBX and I’m really hoping we have another great one and that it gets the kind of recognition it takes to make it a medal event somewhere down the line. I think it’s totally worthy of that kind of status,” U.S. Snowboarding Head Coach Peter Foley said.
Team SBX pairs two riders on a team. One races the course against three to five other competitors. When they cross the finish line, the gate at the start triggers for the next teammate to begin racing.
Capping off the event will be a celebration of epic proportion Saturday night in the South Ridge Lodge where the presentation of the Visa Snowboardcross Championship Series will take place along with live music, an autograph session and fireworks.
