Fred Patacchia Wins 6.0 Lowers Pro

Check out full event coverage at Transworldsurf.com

Courtesy of Transworld Surf:

It’s no coincidence that two Hawaiian goofyfoots came away victorious at Lowers, especially since it was Fred Patacchia and Kai Barger. Both Hawaiians are at the top of their games right now, and it showed at the cobblestone point this past week.

Being the reigning ASP Champ seems to have made Kai Barger’s surfing even better. Kai’s Oakley Pro Jr. win showed that he’s confident, polished, and always smiling, carrying that Aloha with him wherever he goes.

Fellow Hawaiian Freddy P. is sitting third on the World Tour currently, which has been no easy task considering the first two stops on tour aren’t by any means goofyfoot friendly waves. With the circus heading to Teahupoo later this week, Fred has got some serious momentum from this win at Lowers. Heading to Teahupoo with that could mean bad news for everyone else on tour. Check out the full story below for full final day highlights from the 6.0 Lowers Pro and Oakley Pro Jr. Congrats to Freddy P. and Kai Barger!

Official ASP Press Release:

SAN CLEMENTE, California (Saturday, May 3, 2009) – Fred Patacchia (North Shore, HI), 27, won mainland America’s first Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star PRIME event, the 6.0 Lowers Pro, when he defeated defending event champion Ben Bourgeois (Wrightsville Beach, NC), 30, by a score of 16.84 to 14.10 in two-to-four foot (1 metre) surf at the famed cobblestone reef of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California. Today’s action also saw defending ASP World Junior Champion Kai Barger (Haiku, HI), 19, claim the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior, which ran in conjunction with the 6.0 Lowers Pro.

The 6.0 Lowers Pro’s ASP 6-Star PRIME status marks the event as a critical stop on each competitors 2009 ASP WQS campaign because it offers the maximum amount of points towards qualification for the ASP World Tour. The Oakley Pro Junior is the second of eight stops on this year’s ASP North America Pro Junior Series, with the top five seeds at year’s end earning their chance to compete against the best ASP Junior talent in Narrabeen, Australia where they battle for the ASP World Junior Championship title.

Patacchia demolished the Lower Trestles righthanders in his Final against Bourgeois, opening up his battle against the former ASP World Tour campaigner with a 9.17 out of 10 in the opening minutes of the heat. The Hawaiian talent backed up the score with a 7.67 to solidify the win over Bourgeois.

“I’m psyching,” Patacchia said. “We got fun waves throughout the whole event and to do it at pretty fun Trestles with only one other guy out is even better, so I’m happy.”

Patacchia is currently sitting in the No. 3 position on the ASP World Tour after two events and was using the premier ASP WQS 6-Star PRIME to help his competitive focus before launching into the Billabong Pro Teahupoo next week.

“It’s a good warm up for the Hurley Pro,” Patacchia said. “It’s not a good warm up for Tahiti, but I just want to stay in contest mode, keep my body in shape and keep my mind strong and I’m having a fairly decent year this year so I just want to keep it going.”

Bourgeois won the 6.0 Lowers Pro last year when the event was an ASP 4-Star and worked his way through to the Final again this year. The talented regular-footer donated stellar performances throughout the event and fell short of the scores needed in the Final to overtake Patacchia for the 6.0 Lowers Pro win.

“I’m stoked to make the final, it was amazing,” Bourgeois said. “I wish I could have caught a few more waves there at the end, but I’m stoked for Fred (Patacchia) he’s been ripping.”

Bourgeois, who was a competitor on last year’s ASP World Tour, topped several of the finest up-and-coming competitors and also defeated current ASP World Tour No. 6 Adriano de Souza (Guaruja Sao Paulo, BRA), 22, who was in top form throughout the event, on the way to his result.

“It was a stacked field for sure,” Bourgeois said. “To make the Final with all of those guys in huge.”

Bourgeois, who is now living in Carlsbad, California, is only a part-time competitor and will be back in a jersey at the ASP 6-Star Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing this summer. In the meantime, the California transplant will be spending his time working on other surf related projects.

“I’m doing the U.S. Open and the O’Neill Cold Water Classic in Santa Cruz,” Bourgeois said. “I’m going on a boat-trip to Panama at the end of this month and for now I’m just hanging out at home in Carlsbad.

Bourgeois’ victory earns him a berth in to the trials for the Hurley Pro, the ASP World Tour contest held at Lower Trestles. The trials for the prestigous event will be held at the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing this summer.

Barger claimed the Oakley Pro Junior in an amazing display of progressive surfing alongside fellow finalists Davey Cathels (North Narrabeen, AUS), 18, who finished second, Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA), 18, and Hawaiian charger Kiron Jabour (Haleiwa, HI), 18, with an amazing two-wave-score of 18.60 out of 20. Each surfer went wave-for-wave, unleashing massive fins-free turns and huge air reverses, but in the end Barger’s performance would go unmatched.

“Man, that Final was epic, it glassed off out there and the sets just started pumping,” Barger said. “I finally got my chance to get a nice open face right and just tee off, which is what I’ve been waiting to do this whole time, so I’m just super stoked.”

The Oakley Pro Junior victory at Lower Trestles was the first event victory for Barger since his win at the ASP World Junior Championships in Narrabeen, Australia in January, and the result came as a relief to the progressive goofy-footer.

“I’m so stoked because I felt like people would be wondering if I didn’t back up my win from worlds with another result,” Barger said. “This is a solid result for me and it’s good.”

Cathels came from behind to bump Perillo down to the third place position with a last-second effort on a long righthand Lowers wall. The young Australian combined a variety of vicious turns and finished the wave off with a solid reverse to take second overall in the event.

“The waves are so fun out there, it’s just perfect little Trestles,” Cathels said. “The wave is just so rippable. Everone was getting great waves and Kai was just ripping out there, so what can you do, he’s the ASP World Junior Champion for a reason. To get that second, I’m just frothing, that’s what I came here to do.”

Cathels earned the impressive result during his first visit to America and he definitely hope to come back to compete at Trestles again in the future.

“This is my first time to America and my first time to Trestles about a week ago,” Cathels said. “I just fell in love with this wave. It just turned on for us in the Final, it was so good and I’d love to come back.”

Wildcards Finalized for 6.0 Lowers Pro, U.S. Qualifier for Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - One Spot Remains for Winner of Local Junior Trial

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (April 24, 2009) – All of the wildcards have been awarded for the 6.0 Lowers Pro and Oakley Pro Junior except one last coveted spot that will be determined by a local junior trial heat on the first day of competition.

The 6.0 Lowers Pro, the first-ever Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star PRIME on the Mainland U.S., and the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior, the only U.S. qualifier for the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge series, hit legendary Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif. next week, April 28 to May 2, for five days of intense battle at one of the world’s best waves.

Bolstering an impressive list of surfers competing in the 6.0 Lowers Pro, including 17 ASP World Tour standouts, ASP wildcards include former ASP World No. 2 Rob Machado (Carlsbad, CA), who won the event in 1998, Darrell Goodrum (Leucadia, CA), who currently ranks in the top 25 on the WQS, and Anthony Petruso (Malibu, CA).

Nike 6.0 wildcards include 2008 World Junior Champion Kai Barger (HAW), 2008 O’Neill Cold Water Classic Champion Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA) and Evan Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL).

“I’m so stoked the 6.0 Lowers Pro is a 6-Star now,” says Barger. “It’s one of the most rippable waves in the world and really allows the best in the world to showcase their skills. I can’t wait to tee off on a big, open-face nugget.”

One final wildcard will be awarded to the winner of a local junior trials heat of San Clemente-based juniors including Kolohe Andino, Luke Davis, Riley Metcalf and Ian Crane.

The wildcard contestants will compete in a field of 128 surfers including 17 of the ASP World Tour’s top 45: CJ Hobgood (Melbourne Beach, FL), Adriano de Souza (BRA), Dane Reynolds (Ventura, CA), Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), Chris Ward (San Clemente, CA), Taylor Knox (Carlsbad, CA), Damien Hobgood (Melbourne Beach, FL), Heitor Alves (BRA), Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA), Michel Bourez (PYF), Nic Muscroft (AUS), Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), Tim Boal (FRA), Dustin Barca (HAW), and Marlon Lipke (DEU).

The stacked field will vie for a $145,000 prize purse, including $20,000 and 3,500 points for first place, the most ASP WQS ratings points possible. Also up for grabs, a wildcard into the Hurley Pro World Tour Trials for Trestles, which will be held at the Hurley U.S. Open, July 18-19, in Huntington Beach, Calif. The WQS surfer with the top result at the 6.0 Lowers Pro will be awarded a wildcard into the Trials for a chance to earn a spot into the only World Tour event on the Mainland U.S.A.

Wildcard selections for the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge U.S Qualifier are Miguel Pupo (BRA), who won the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge Qualifier in Lacanau, France in 2008, and 15-year-old Connor Coffin (Santa Barbara, CA).

Running concurrently, the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior unites 48 juniors (20 years and younger) battling for a $10,000 prize purse and two coveted qualifying spots into the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge Finals. This will be the only U.S. qualifier for the prominent event, which gained notoriety last year due to its massive prize purse, professional format, and high caliber of qualifier location selections. Concurrently, the South Africa qualifier is in Port Alfred, South Africa, May 1-3. The series will also make stops in Brazil, Japan and France offering a total cumulative prize purse of $165,000 with $75,000 for the final event including an impressive $20,000 for first-place.

Boost Mobile To Sponsor WCT Trestles Event

Posted 04.11.2002
Boost Mobile has acquired the ASP License to stage a World Championship Tour (WCT) event at the world famous Lower Trestles in Southern California, the only WCT event on USA mainland soil. The event will be named the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Billabong and will be held September 5-14 carrying a prize purse of 250,000 dollars.Boost Mobile is a lifestyle based telecommunications company headquartered in Irvine, California. Boost Mobiles’ product range includes pre-paid mobile phones, “Re-Boost” pre-paid phone cards and a wide range of telecommunications accessories and services directed at the youth and action sports markets.

Lower Trestles, locally know as Lowers, is located between Los Angeles and San Diego on the northern edge of the Camp Pendleton Marine Base, just one mile south of San Clemente and 15 miles north of Oceanside. As a south facing rock bottom point break, Trestles offers consistent, quality peeling rights and the occasional excellent shaped left. Because of its consistency, Lowers is the perfect competition site.

With the arrival of the WCT to Lower Trestles again, Southern California will be host to some of the best competitive surfing the tour has seen since the Billabong Pro in 1999 where Andy Irons (Haw) was victorious over Jake Paterson (Aus).

Defending champion and Boost Mobile team rider Andy Irons was excited to hear the news, “I am really looking forward to competing and defending my title at Trestles, it is such a rippable wave. It is also awesome to have Boost Mobile as the title sponsor who have been great supporters of surfing and the industry.”

Expect the rest of the Top 45 to take up the challenge, alongside ASP wildcard Kelly Slater (USA), the greatest competitive surfer in history, and the two event wildcard nominations, which will include Bruce Irons, the current Pipe Masters champion (and also a Boost Mobile team rider) and the overall champion from the Billabong/Boost Mobile Junior Surfing Series, to be decider later this year in California.

Other top contenders to watch include reigning World Champion CJ Hobgood (USA), the Lopez brothers and 2000 World Champion Sunny Garcia (Haw). There will also be a strong contingent of Australians headed up by perennial inform Mark Occhilupo, and the young Australian upstarts, Taj Burrow, Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson.

Peter Adderton, Boost Mobile’s President and CEO, said he was excited about the opportunity to deliver a WCT event back to California. “This is a huge win for surfing and Californian surfing in particular. Trestles is an awesome wave and all the guys on the tour have been great in supporting Boost Mobile in making this happen. We wanted to do something exciting in conjunction with our launch into the US market to demonstrate our support of the surf industry, and the Boost Mobile Pro is the ideal way for us to do that.”

ASP International President/CEO Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew was equally enthusiastic: “ASP International is also delighted to be able to announce the return of World Championship Tour surfing to North America. ‘Lowers’ at Trestles is a world-class venue, totally conducive to the dynamics of contemporary pro surfing, and this event will provide a major boost to American surfing. I congratulate Peter Adderton for bringing Boost Mobile Phones to the WCT arena, this long-term WCT License is just the shot the ASP World Tour needs to go to the next level.”
