The Surfrider Foundation will hold several “Morning After Mess Cleanup” events at beaches across San Diego after the holiday weekend on Monday, July 6th. At the cleanups Sun Diego will be giving away T-shirts to volunteers and raffling off prizes including Sun Diego gear and concert tickets to see 311 or Incubus in July at Cricket Amphitheater. Here’s some additional information provided by Surfrider:
“Five cleanups from 8-11 a.m.:
Ocean Beach Pier - meet at grassy area by the end of Newport Ave.
Mission Beach - Belmont Park - meet south of roller coaster, on the grassy area by the boardwalk
Pacific Beach - meet at the end of PB Drive on the beach
South Carlsbad State Beach - Ponto Beach - meet south of Ponto jetty
Oceanside - South Harbor Jetty - meet on the beach near the parking lot where Harbor Dr. meets Pacific St.
With the 4th falling on a Saturday and comparatively less litter on the 5th last year, we feel it’s best to host the cleanup day after the holiday weekend on that Monday. As always, we are going to be actively getting out the message to take less to the beach and avoid and single-use items.”

» Read Full StoryA recent article in the North County Times takes a look at the community of Poway, California. Infamous for arbitrarily closing its park down when one or two skaters is caught without pads, the city is looking into a new system to allow skaters into the park.
According to the article, Community Services Director Robert Clark would install a scanner to read thumbprints for registered skaters. This device would be installed to “curb vandalism and misbehavior at the park.”
“Clark said the renovations would help the city monitor who is using the park. City Hall would maintain a database of the names, ages and fingerprints of people who register to use the park, he said. That information, with an upgraded camera system monitoring the park, will help keep skaters on their best behavior even when no one else is around, Clark said.”
