ORSM Kicks Off With Largest Retailer Numbers to Date

Salt Lake City, UT - Despite a challenging economy, the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market (ORSM) opened Friday at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City with the largest number of exhibitors in the history of the show for the $46 billion outdoor industry, with over 100 new exhibitors.

ORSM ’08, taking place August 8 – August 11, previews next year’s gear, apparel and accessories from brands including Black Diamond, Merrell, Patagonia and first-time exhibitors such as Under Armour. Buyers from around the world will not only see future trends, but also, may avail themselves of opportunities that could open doors to international exporting.

Of special note is ORSM’s focus on connecting today’s youth to the outdoors through Outdoor Industry Association’s “I Will” campaign, asking attendees to pledge to take two kids outside during the next year in an effort to connect

youth with the outdoors and to help reverse downward participation trends in the industry.

Aside from sustainability trends, buyers at ORSM are seeing: high-performance products being introduced at value prices; recycled fabric in everything from apparel to backpacks; a surge in commuter bike apparel; a continuing trend of light and fast apparel, footwear and equipment; an increase in luggage designed not only for outdoor pursuits but also for airline restrictions; and the evolution of the navigation category.

“Summer Market 2008 is the best international showcase for what is on tap for this energetic industry,” said Kenji Haroutunian, show director for Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. “With over 100 new exhibitors, this year’s show and Open Air Demo proves the industry is alive and well, despite a tough economy. The show floor is overflowing with new connections, inspirations and opportunities, while the pre- and post-show activities embrace the spirit of the outdoors.”

ORSM ’08 is offering new opportunities for international buyers through a special exhibition by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Commercial Service, as well as interactive sessions by managing director of China Outdoor Retailers Association (CORA), Roger Zeng. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Commercial Service, in cooperation with Outdoor Retailer, is providing high-quality exporter information and assistance to help attendees break into global markets, and Zeng is conducting hourly Q&A sessions around selling into the China and Asia markets.

To support its commitment to inspire today’s youth to become engaged with the outdoor world, Friday’s opening industry breakfast, co-hosted by Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), featured president and CEO of The Conservation Fund Lawrence Selzer, who discussed demographic and cultural trends shaping the youth of today and tomorrow, and what the industry can do to connect with them. Selzer emphasized that it is the nations’ issue and opportunity to lead, speak powerfully, and educate today’s youth on the importance of the outdoors in their lives.
