Team O’Neill Storms The Podiums With Three World Titles

TEAM O’NEILL STORMS THE PODIUMS WITH 3 WORLD TITLES

O’Neill – Warmond, The Netherlands – March 23, 2009 – Team O’Neill has been on fire in recent weeks, scoring a number of World Championship titles and podium finishes across freeride and freestyle snowboarding and skiing.

After clinching the FIS Halfpipe World Championship title in Japan earlier this month, Virginie FAIVRE (CH) continued her run of exceptional form this past weekend with yet another halfpipe victory – this time on home soil at the Orage European Freeski Open by Swatch in Laax, Switzerland.

“I just love coming back here every year,” said Virginie. “I’ve always done really well in Laax, and after winning three Slopestyle titles in a row it feels so good to finally tame this huge pipe and win my first European Open Halfpipe title. It’s a great feeling that I’ll celebrate tonight with the help of my friends and a few glasses of champagne!”

On the freeride skiing front, Ane ENDERUD (NOR) – one of the most recent additions to Team O’Neill – enjoyed a victory of her own at the prestigious Nissan Xtreme Verbier. After finishing inside the top 5 at the previous three events on the Freeride World Tour, Ane’s victory in Verbier propelled her to the top of the overall rankings and allowed the 28-year-old to claim her first Freeride World Championship title.

Speaking after the awards ceremony, Ane said: “This is just unbelievable. To win one of the most important contests in the history of freeride skiing is a truly great honor, and then to be crowned World Champion in this incredible setting is way beyond my wildest dreams. Thanks to all my friends, family and sponsors for all the support!”

While Virginie and Ane were cleaning up in Europe, 16-year-old freestyle snowboarding phenomenon Sebastien TOUTANT (CAN) was flying the O’Neill flag triple overhead at one of snowboarding’s most renowned contests: the Burton US Open. An impressive 3rd place finish in the Quarterpipe event followed by a jaw-dropping 2nd place finish in the Ticket To Ride (TTR) 6-STAR Slopestyle event was more than enough to push Toots back inside the top 10 of the TTR rankings – proof, if ever it was needed, of Toots’ incredible natural ability on a snowboard.

Another team rider worthy of mention is newly crowned FIS Big Air World Champion Stefan GIMPL (AUT). The ever-stylish podium conqueror has been teaching the competition a thing or two about consistency in an FIS season that never saw him finish lower than 4th place. Recent 1st place finishes in Stoneham, Canada and Moscow, Russia capped what was yet another memorable year for the Austrian stomp master.

O’Neill Global Snow Team Manager Franck Corbery is pumped to see so many of his team riders peaking at the crucial point of the season, and said: “We’ve got a really stacked team of riders killing it 24/7 all over the world, and these latest results and achievements continue to underline the team’s strength and depth. With the more established riders on the team continuing to fulfill their potential and a number of younger rookies also coming up through the ranks, things are already looking pretty sick for 2009/10.”

About O’Neill:

O’Neill, the original Californian surf, snow and lifestyle brand, was founded in 1952 when a young man named Jack O’Neill took his unstoppable passion for surfing and used it to beat Mother Nature at her own game. Pioneering the world’s first neoprene wetsuit, Jack had successfully found a way to extend his surf sessions in the bone-chilling breaks of Northern California. He opened up the garage doors to his first surf shop in Santa Cruz soon after.

While many things have changed since those humble beginnings, Jack’s initial vision of producing functional and innovative boardriding products continues to lie at the core of everything the company does. O’Neill’s set of core values – innovation in style and technology – has seen the brand devote itself wholeheartedly to the evolution of action sports. From the first ever neoprene wetsuit and surf leash, to the world’s first stitchless boardshorts and range of groundbreaking wearable electronics, O’Neill’s spirit of innovation will always drive the company forwards.

Today, O’Neill can be found the world over. In touch with its rich heritage and the universal stoke of boardriding culture, O’Neill will always be committed to progressing that evolution and growing its reputation as one of the world’s leading youth lifestyle brands.
