Nike 6.0 Becomes Title Sponsor Of Dew Tour BMX Event

The World’s Premier Action Sports Tour and Nike 6.0 have joined forces to kick off the 2009 Dew Tour with its first ever BMX-Specific Event

Burr Ridge, Ill. – May 6, 2009 – Marking a major sponsorship milestone, the Dew Tour announced today a multi-year deal with Nike 6.0, part of Nike’s action sports division, as the new event title sponsor of the BMX-specific stop of the Dew Tour. Nike 6.0 will debut its new sponsorship role at the Nike 6.0 BMX Open in Chicago’s Grant Park, June 26-27, 2009, but will continue as an associate sponsor for the remaining 2009 Summer and Winter Dew Tour stops.

In addition to showcasing the BMX park, vert and dirt disciplines that have been a staple on the Dew Tour over its five-year history, Nike 6.0 will be adding a “true street” specialty competition to the first ever Nike 6.0 BMX Open. The street comp will consist of nine riders divided into teams of three with a filmer for each team. The three captains – Garrett Reynolds, Van Homan and Sean Sexton (chosen based on their X Games 14 podium finishes) – will choose their teammates for the competition, and the winning team will be judged by a combination of scores from a jam session on June 26 and a video part created prior to the jam.

“Nike 6.0 is deeply committed to Action Sports, and the Dew Tour has proven to be an incredible platform to elevate our athletes. The new BMX-specific stop is a great opportunity to showcase our support, and it was only natural for Nike 6.0 to increase our sponsorship level to Title Sponsor,” said Bastien Renard, Nike Global Brand Director of Action Sports. “We are honored and beyond excited to be able to add a true street comp to the BMX Open and invite a new sector of BMX riders to participate in the Dew Tour.”

“Having one of the biggest brands in all of sports join us as a title sponsor is a tremendous example of the strength of the Dew Tour property,” said John Stamatis, Vice President of Marketing and Partnerships. “The fact that Nike 6.0 is extending their involvement in the Dew Tour is a testament to their vision of growing action sports at all levels.”

“I’m stoked that Nike 6.0 is sponsoring the BMX event this year,” said Dennis Enarson, Nike 6.0 athlete and third in the 2008 Dew Tour’s BMX dirt rankings. “Having them host the first stop of the Dew Tour will make it that much better and will elevate the level of riding even more.”

Nike 6.0 originally signed on as an associate-level partner for the 2008 Dew Tour as well as the inaugural Winter Dew Tour. As event title sponsor, Nike 6.0 will receive tour-wide exclusivity in the footwear, athletic and casual apparel, and outerwear categories. Nike 6.0 will also receive fully integrated marketing benefits, including television ads on NBC and USA Network, online and on-site exposure as well as inclusion in the Tour’s multi-million dollar marketing campaign.

The complete 2009 Dew Tour schedule is as follows:

Event                           Date                             Location

Nike 6.0 BMX Open        June 26-27                    Chicago, Ill.—Grant Park

Skate Open                   July 24-25                     Boston, Mass.—TD Banknorth Garden

Entering its fifth year, the Dew Tour is the most watched and attended action sports property in the world. Attendance for the 2008 Dew Tour totaled nearly 275,000 and an average of 41 million viewers tuned in via NBC and USA. The top athletes in the world will take part in this year’s Tour, all competing for the highly coveted Dew Cup that will be awarded in Orlando at season’s end to champions in each of the six disciplines. The 2008 Dew Cup winners include Chaz Ortiz (Skateboard Park), Pierre-Luc Gagnon (Skateboard Vert), Jamie Bestwick (BMX Vert), Cameron White (BMX Dirt), Daniel Dhers (BMX Park), and Adam Jones (Freestyle Motocross).

Wildcards Finalized for 6.0 Lowers Pro, U.S. Qualifier for Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - One Spot Remains for Winner of Local Junior Trial

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (April 24, 2009) – All of the wildcards have been awarded for the 6.0 Lowers Pro and Oakley Pro Junior except one last coveted spot that will be determined by a local junior trial heat on the first day of competition.

The 6.0 Lowers Pro, the first-ever Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star PRIME on the Mainland U.S., and the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior, the only U.S. qualifier for the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge series, hit legendary Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif. next week, April 28 to May 2, for five days of intense battle at one of the world’s best waves.

Bolstering an impressive list of surfers competing in the 6.0 Lowers Pro, including 17 ASP World Tour standouts, ASP wildcards include former ASP World No. 2 Rob Machado (Carlsbad, CA), who won the event in 1998, Darrell Goodrum (Leucadia, CA), who currently ranks in the top 25 on the WQS, and Anthony Petruso (Malibu, CA).

Nike 6.0 wildcards include 2008 World Junior Champion Kai Barger (HAW), 2008 O’Neill Cold Water Classic Champion Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA) and Evan Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL).

“I’m so stoked the 6.0 Lowers Pro is a 6-Star now,” says Barger. “It’s one of the most rippable waves in the world and really allows the best in the world to showcase their skills. I can’t wait to tee off on a big, open-face nugget.”

One final wildcard will be awarded to the winner of a local junior trials heat of San Clemente-based juniors including Kolohe Andino, Luke Davis, Riley Metcalf and Ian Crane.

The wildcard contestants will compete in a field of 128 surfers including 17 of the ASP World Tour’s top 45: CJ Hobgood (Melbourne Beach, FL), Adriano de Souza (BRA), Dane Reynolds (Ventura, CA), Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), Chris Ward (San Clemente, CA), Taylor Knox (Carlsbad, CA), Damien Hobgood (Melbourne Beach, FL), Heitor Alves (BRA), Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA), Michel Bourez (PYF), Nic Muscroft (AUS), Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), Tim Boal (FRA), Dustin Barca (HAW), and Marlon Lipke (DEU).

The stacked field will vie for a $145,000 prize purse, including $20,000 and 3,500 points for first place, the most ASP WQS ratings points possible. Also up for grabs, a wildcard into the Hurley Pro World Tour Trials for Trestles, which will be held at the Hurley U.S. Open, July 18-19, in Huntington Beach, Calif. The WQS surfer with the top result at the 6.0 Lowers Pro will be awarded a wildcard into the Trials for a chance to earn a spot into the only World Tour event on the Mainland U.S.A.

Wildcard selections for the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge U.S Qualifier are Miguel Pupo (BRA), who won the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge Qualifier in Lacanau, France in 2008, and 15-year-old Connor Coffin (Santa Barbara, CA).

Running concurrently, the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior unites 48 juniors (20 years and younger) battling for a $10,000 prize purse and two coveted qualifying spots into the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge Finals. This will be the only U.S. qualifier for the prominent event, which gained notoriety last year due to its massive prize purse, professional format, and high caliber of qualifier location selections. Concurrently, the South Africa qualifier is in Port Alfred, South Africa, May 1-3. The series will also make stops in Brazil, Japan and France offering a total cumulative prize purse of $165,000 with $75,000 for the final event including an impressive $20,000 for first-place.

Visit the event sites at www.nike6lowerspro.com and www.oakleyprojunior.com for behind-the scenes action, analysis and exclusives. All five days of the world-class event will be webcast live at www.nike6lowerspro.com and an enhanced quality webcast will be available for the final two days exclusively at www.fuel.tv.  The additional webcast, that rivals broadcast quality, is thanks to a unique partnership between Action Sports Group and FUEL TV, the only network dedicated to the lifestyle of action sports.

The 6.0 Lowers Pro and Oakley Pro Junior wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of sponsors Nike 6.0 and Oakley, co-sponsor Red Bull, and media sponsors Surfer (surfermag.com), Surfing (surfingthemag.com), WaveWatch.com and FUEL TV.

Nike 6.0 and 3 Inches of Blood Shoe Collaboration
Heavy Metal Footwear: Blood Oncore High

Nike 6.0 and Canadian heavy metal band, 3 Inches of Blood, have joined forces resulting in the darkest 6.0 shoe collab to date, the Blood Oncore High. “The collaboration idea came directly from a few of our athletes who are obsessed with metal and 3IOB. The band was down for anything and even flew out to an event for a secret show. The kids went ballistic in the pit and were beyond psyched to meet and hang with the band after their performance. It was amazing to be able to bring everyone together and create some chaos!” said Nike Product Manager Tim Reede.

The band chose Nike 6.0’s NEW Zoom Oncore High to translate their soundtrack of mayhem. Inspired by Viking folklore and mythical carnage, 3IOB worked with the product team on custom materials and colors. The upper, constructed with premium distressed battle-worn leather is mixed with sanguine accents and the muted greens of rot and pestilence. Metallic side panels simulate armor and warrior-shields, while the blood-red outsole and tongue are an ode to the band’s name.

The Blood Oncore High drops May 1st at select retailers.

Top Rated Surfers On Tap For ASP WQS 6-Star Prime 6.0 Lowers Pro

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (April 9, 2009) – The list of competitors for the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star PRIME rated 6.0 Lowers Pro includes a stacked field of elite World Championship Tour (WCT) talent and top-rated WQS professional surfers.  Held from April 28-May 2 at world-famous Lower Trestles, San Clemente, Calif., the event will be the first ASP WQS 6-Star PRIME held on the U.S. Mainland, the highest rating for a WQS event.

With the upgrade from a 4-Star to a prestigious 6-Star PRIME, the field has been narrowed from 192 to 128 men and 17 WCT surfers have entered the competition, more than double last year’s entries. With this in mind, a local trial has been planned which will seed one local junior surfer, under the age of 20, into the first round of competition. Additionally, Nike 6.0 will award wildcards to three notable surfers, two into Round 2 (the Round of 96) and one into Round 1 (the Round of 128).

“The increased event rating has drawn an unprecedented level of talent, and we are very excited to see top WCT surfers on the seed list,” Jason Kenworthy, Nike 6.0. “What we are really hyped to provide is this opportunity for the WQS guys to score big points at an amazing wave like Lowers. The wildcards and the under 20 local trials are also ways for Nike 6.0 to help the top pros of the future to gain valuable experience and seed points in an event at this level. The 2008 World Jr. Champion, Kai Barger, and the 2008 NSSA National Champion, Nat Young, have accepted both of the Nike Round 96 wildcards.”

The WCT standouts who will be competing at the 6.0 Lowers Pro include 2001 World Champion CJ Hobgood (Melbourne Beach, FL) who is currently ranked fifth on the World Tour after the first event and won the Trestles event in 2002 and 2007; Adriano de Souza (BRA), currently ranked second after the first WCT event; Dane Reynolds (Ventura, CA); Fredrick Patacchia (HAW); Chris Ward (San Clemente, CA); Taylor Knox (Carlsbad, CA) who won the event in 1994; Damien Hobgood (Melbourne Beach, FL); and Heitor Alves (BRA), now in his second year on the Tour.

Several 2009 World Tour rookies will also compete including Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA); the World Tour’s only Tahitian, Michel Bourez, who will make his U.S. debut at Trestles (pictured); Nic Muscroft (AUS); Kekoa Bacalso (HAW); Tim Boal (FRA); Dustin Barca (HAW); and Marlon Lipke (DEU).

The international contingent of top rated WQS surfers in the competition, rounding out the top 30 event seeds in the Round of 96 in ranking order includes:

Patrick Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA)
Hizunome Bettero (BRA)
Simao Romao (BRA)
Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA)
Jadson Andre (BRA)
Raoni Monteiro (BRA)
Pablo Paulino (BRA)
Nathan Yeomans (San Clemente, CA)
Leigh Sedley (AUS)
Rodrigo Dornelles (BRA)
Jay Thompson (AUS)
Daniel Ross (AUS)
Dusty Payne (HAW)
Joel Centeio (HAW)
Mike Losness (San Clemente, CA)
Willian Cardoso (BRA)

Last year’s 6.0 Lowers Pro Champion and former WCT surfer Ben Bourgeois (Carlsbad, CA) will be seeded into the Round of 128, as well as, Shane Beschen (HAW), who has a legacy of victories at Trestles (1992, 1993, 1996, 2003), and Pancho Sullivan (HAW).

The local will trial provide a pivotal opportunity for a local grom to earn a spot into the competition and valuable experience amongst some of the world’s toughest competitors at one of the world’s most prestigious locations. Likely San Clemente-based contenders for that spot include up-and-comers Riley Metcalf, Kolohe Andino, Luke Davis and Ian Crane.

The field of 128 men will vie for a $145,000 prize purse, including $20,000 and 3,500 points for first place, the most ASP WQS ratings points possible. Also up for grabs, a wildcard into the Hurley Pro WCT Trials for Trestles, which will be held at the Hurley US Open, July 18-19, in Huntington Beach, Calif. The WQS surfer with the top result at the 6.0 Lowers Pro will be awarded a wildcard into the Trials for a chance to earn a spot into the only WCT event in North America.

That, combined with the merging of the ASP North America and ASP Hawaii regional ratings for the 2009 Pro Junior division, suggests this will be a contentious event for the juniors.

Visit the event sites at www.nike6lowerspro.com and www.oakleyprojunior.com for behind-the scenes action, analysis and exclusives. All five days of the world-class event will be webcast live beginning April 28, 2009.

MARKET WATCH: A Few Thoughts on Nike’s Quarter

A couple of days go, Nike put out a press release for their first quarter ended August 31. It’s not the whole quarterly report, so I can’t delve into any footnotes. They sold, uh, a whole bunch of stuff and made a lot of money. I’ll deal with the details when the 10Q is filed. Here’s the link to the press release if you want to review the summary financial statements. You don’t need me to spew the numbers back at you. But as I read the press release, I was struck by the fact that a few years ago, I wouldn’t have bothered.
