International Surfing Day Returns June 20

If you haven’t already, mark your calendars for this Saturday, June 20, for International Surfing Day 2009. Check out this press release from the Surfrider Foundation for more information:

“WHAT: Grab your surfboards, wax and wetsuits and paddle out in celebration of International Surfing Day’s five-year anniversary.  Founded by the Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine, and presented by Monster Energy, International Surfing Day unites surfers from around the world in celebration of the sport of surfing, and encourages all ocean lovers to give back by participating in local Surfrider Foundation chapter events.

In addition to giving back ISD participants have the opportunity to compete in a variety of on-site challenges and win prizes from: Electric, Ocean Minded, Matix, DVS, O’Neill, Reef, Sector Nine, Globe, Vans, Body Glove, Patagonia, Billabong, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Ecousable, Western Federal Credit Union and DaKine.  The complete list of challenges can be found at www.intlsurfingday.com.

International Surfing Day Introduces Challenges on June 20

International Surfing Day Announces Challenges and Prizes

San Clemente, CA (June 1, 2009) –In celebration of International Surfing Day’s 5th anniversary on June 20, Surfrider Foundation chapters and other ocean lovers around the world will be holding three on-site challenges to get beach-goers creating, surfing and competing: Costume Party: Best Costume While Riding a Wave, Most Spots Surfed on ISD: Photo and/or Video Contest, and the Butt Challenge: How Many Cigarette Butts You Can Collect in an Hour.

In addition, ISD “challenge” sponsors are hosting a variety of activities ranging from filmmaking, to beach cleanups, to art and surf contests. This year, “challenges” and prizes are sponsored by Electric, Ocean Minded, Matix, DVS, O’Neill, Reef, Sector Nine, Globe, Vans, Volcom, Body Glove, Patagonia, Billabong, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Ecousable and DaKine.

“We are very excited to continue the tradition of incorporating ‘challenges’ into International Surfing Day,” says SURFING Magazine’s editor-in-chief Travis Ferre. “The ‘challenges’ are a great way for people to get involved and be creative all while giving back to a good cause, our oceans.”

Founded five years ago by the Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine, International Surfing Day, presented by Monster Energy, unites surfers from around the world in celebration of the sport of surfing. As is tradition with the annual holiday, surfers will do their part to give back to our oceans, waves and beaches through various organized events such as clean-ups and restoration projects courtesy of the Surfrider Foundation.
