The Source, Europe’s b2b magazine for surf/snow/
skate is organizing the fifth annual snowboard industry
forum from the 24-26th of April in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Germany.
Following on from the success of last years forum
which over a hundred industry personnel attended,
this years Forum will continue to be the unique platform
that brings the key players together to discus the
European snowboard market and its unique issues.
The opening dinner on Thursday evening and will be
followed by two days of seminars and workgroups.
This years topics include:
European and North American 2008/9 snowboard figures,
European and North American 2008/9 freeski
figures, Sustainability or slow death, A review of the
season and plans for the future for TTR, WSF, Freeride
Tour and a European on snow Demo tour proposal,
The Czech market- the fastest developing market
on our doorstep,Workgroups to formulate plans that
can be used as working documents for the Mountain
Division during 2009/10, The Future of ecommerce for
Branded Manufacturers: Zero or Hero? and Marketing
strategies for tough times.
Friday night is this years Snowball evening to raise
money for environmental causes and includes the
presentation of the European Snowboard Industry
Awards.

Sustainability or slow death
Sustainability is moving from an optional to a necessary
business model as consumers and media take more notice
Jarda has been involved in the Czech snowboarding
scene from the mid nineties since then the Czech market
has grown to become the largest Snowboard market
in Eastern Europe. As one of the latest additions to the
Euro zone, the Czech market is seen as a new European
frontier offering significantly more growth then more
established national markets. In the seminar Jarda will
review the development of his home market and point
out the trends that the market is now following, looking at
opportunities for overseas brands.

2008/2009 The freeski market
As last year we will be presenting the figures for
the free ski market as a separate topic. This will
enable delegates to compare the performance of each
of these competing markets. Dave will present the same
information for North America
of the environment and governments legislate to protect
our future. Karsten will firstly talk about the pressures that
make sustainability a necessity and then Stewart will look
at the definitions of sustainable development and at
each ‘building block’ of sustainability (Social, Environmental,
Economical). Then he will look at what a company
can do under each one of these blocks in theory and
in reality, and examine the Holistic approach to sustainability
where you apply it to the whole company and the
product approach which concentrates on the engineering
processes. Karsten then will talk about his experiences of
taking Volkl snowboards in this direction, the issues and
the payoffs.

This year the workgroups will concentrate on iniatives
that the Mountain Division has been working on throughout
the year. Remi will first outline what has been achieved since
the last forum and will then ask each of the workgroup
leaders to explain briefly the topic they will manage. The
forum will then break up into groups to work on the topics
and then each group will report back to the Forum with
a summary of their discussions. These summaries will
form the basis of wo&rking documents that the Mountain
division will develop over the coming year. This year one
complete morning is set aside as all of these topics are
now becoming active iniatives that benefit the industry
as a whole.

The economic downturn will effect the snowboard
industry differently from other industries. There are more
drivers in the snowboarding market than just the disposable
incomes of the consumers (e.g. snow conditions).
However, as manufacturers are producers of durable
goods they will face more problems than snowboard
event organizers or mountain railways companies. In
an economic downturn consumers will cut expenditure

branded manufactureres:
hero or zero?
The retail landscape has been shaken to the core by the
emergence of the Internet and online shopping.
Manufacturer websites, with rich product information and
attractive lifestyle-oriented content, are a popular destination
for shoppers researching a new purchase. How can a
manufacturer best meet the needs of the online shopper,
while maximizing the rate of conversion from «shopper»
to «buyer?» Ed Stevens will present the four ways a manufacturer
can turn its website’s traffic into sales, and the
Pros and Cons of each. Stevens will also outline how
the online marketplace can evolve to support local bricks
and mortar stores, which are essential to the development
of snowboarding as an industry.

Columbia Sportswear Appoints Director of Sales for Europe

Columbia Sportswear Company, a global leader in the active outdoor apparel and footwear industries, today announced the appointment of Patrick Chevallier as the director of sales for Europe. He will report to Christian Finell, general manager, Europe.

Chevallier, 46, is a veteran of the sports business industry with 18 years of experience. He joins Columbia from Amer Sports, where he served as commercial director for Eastern Europe and more than 20 countries of the EMEA region. Prior to that, he was employed for 12 years at Salomon in various international marketing and management positions. Chevallier is a native of France and will be based at Columbia’s European headquarters located in Geneva, Switzerland.

“We are pleased to welcome Patrick Chevallier to Columbia Sportswear. His strategic management skills and extensive knowledge of pan-European sales operations will play an important role in executing our global go-to-market initiatives in the European outdoor market,” said Christian Finell, General Manager Europe.
