Colorado Ski Resorts Get Fresh Makeover In Time For Events, Competitions

Denver, Colo. – February 20, 2009 – A series of winter storms made their way across Colorado this week, blanketing resorts with fresh powder conditions. Every Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) resort received new snow recently, with as much as 19 inches accumulating at Monarch.

Snowmass and Aspen Highlands each received 14 inches of new snow as they prepared for this coming weekend Mardi Gras celebration at Snowmass.

Winter Park also received 13 inches of new snow. “Conditions are fantastic, particularly in the trees at the Jane and in the Vasquez Cirque,” explains Jennifer deBerge, communications manager at Winter Park. Winter Park is closing in on 20 feet of snow received for the season.

Sunlight and Aspen Mountain each received a foot of fresh powder. The new snow will help to enhance terrain at Sunlight as they prepare for their Rail Jam and Big Air competitions taking place on Sunday.

Over the past few days, at least 10 inches of new snow has fallen at Silverton and Crested Butte mountains. Silverton continues to offer heli-drops this season, enabling the resort to access an expanded amount of terrain.

New snow is collecting at Crested Butte while the resort hosts the 18th Annual US Extreme Freeskiing Championships this week, with the finals being held this weekend.

Other resorts with new snow and events this weekend include Ski Cooper. Ski Cooper received 9 inches from the storms this week and is hosting the annual reunion of WWII 10th Mountain Division Veterans this weekend.

Arapahoe Basin also saw over 9 inches of fresh snow, which when added to the current winter conditions and the resort’s high altitude, creates the ideal scenario for the Rocky Mountain Freestyle Devo Competition this weekend. “We have great midwinter conditions right now,” explains Kimberly Trembearth, marketing coordinator at A-Basin. “The soft, plush terrain is enhanced by the recent snowfall and our high elevation.”

Steamboat, SolVista Basin and Loveland each received more than 8 inches of new snow this week. Steamboat is up to 37 inches of snow for the month of February so far and 286 inches for the season. “Conditions continue to be incredible at Steamboat,” explains Loryn Kasten, communications manager for Steamboat. “Champagne Powder™ snow is covering the slopes. Combine that with ideal Colorado bluebird days, and you have the perfect recipe for a winter vacation.”

If the new snow isn’t enough to celebrate, Loveland is hosting a Mardi Gras party this weekend while Sol Vista Basin gets kids on the slopes with its Barnelopet Children’s Ski Carnival.

At least half of a foot of new snow recently fell at Telluride, Eldora and Buttermilk. The new snow further enhances Telluride’s new terrain, Revelation Bowl, which just opened earlier this year. Eldora welcomes the fresh powder for the second session of its Saturday Trek series.

The storms dropped fresh flurries in the southwest part of the state including Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort which received just under half of a foot and Wolf Creek, which also got new snow. This Sunday is College Day at Wolf Creek and on both Saturday and Sunday, Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort will host its She Ride snowboard clinic.

Copper Mountain has reached more than 210 inches of snow so far this season and the conditions are ideal for their Tucker Mountain snowcat operations. “Tucker Mountain snowcat rides offer a backcountry experience within the bounds of Copper,” explains David Roth, communications coordinator for Copper Mountain. “Tucker Mountain and Copper Bowl offer expert skiers and riders access to Copper’s legendary high alpine back bowls. The terrain is accessible by hiking or by taking a free snowcat ride or a combination of both.”

With fresh snow on the slopes, Powderhorn is hosting their Women’s Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, and Echo Mountain Park invites teams of three to compete in its Echo Team Challenge.
