What an awesome day of professional ASP World Tour surfing! We’ve been waiting for Supertubos to fire up and today Europe’s version of Pipeline delivered - and then some…
We scored PUMPING 8-10 ft waves all day for the Men’s Round 3 Heats and Quarter Finals and we were lucky enough to witness 3 perfect 10s (in consecutive heats) from Bede Durbidge, Joel Parkinson and Owen Wright…
With the gold has also come some carnage though, Supertubos claiming several broken boards and two bad injuries.
Wright was forced to withdraw from his Quarter Final heat after a bad wipeout with just over 11 minutes to go (just after he posted his perfect 10) and was rushed to hospital for treatment. It was later announced the 19-year-old suffered a nasty perforated eardrum and could be kept out of the water for up to six weeks.
Despite the injury the Aussie still won through his heat because Damien Hobgood was unable to find a high second wave score.
Kai Otton was also hit hard and taken down with a grade 1 ligament tear on his knee during his Round 3 heat with Parko, but early reports suggest he should make a fast recovery.
With Parko through to the first Semi Final and Mick Fanning in the second, there’s a strong potential for an epic Final clash.
The forecast for tomorrow shows another promising day of great waves, so it’s an 8AM call for the Men’s Semi Finals and the Women’s Round 1 heats.
If it’s anything like what we’ve seen today, it’s going to be another unmissable day of first-class surfing and we’ll be here LIVE and direct - whatever you’re meant to be doing tomorrow, cancel it, ‘cause you won’t want to miss a second!
