Out of a field of 51 skaters, Tyson Bowerbank won the skate park competition and Jordan Price won the skate vert contest Saturday at the Gatorade Free Flow Tour’s stop in Florence, Ky.
Fourteen-year-old Bowerbank from Sandy, Utah earned the skate park victory at Ollies Skatepark after executing a shove-it front boardslide and a backside 360 down the stairs during the final jam session. Gage Smith was second and Nick Lee finished in third place.
“I’m so glad we came out here for this contest,” Bowerbank said. “I can’t wait for the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals!”
In the skate vert contest, 14-year-old Price from Daytona Beach, Fla. used a technically smooth run that included a kickflip indy and a smith grind on the coping to secure the win. James Wilkins took second place, while Mitchie Brusco rounded out the top three.
“Wow, I’m psyched for Finals,” Price said. “But now I’ve got to go win the skate park contest at another stop of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour!”
“It’s really great to have Gatorade getting into skateboarding,” Ollies owner, Bob Leffler said. “This addition really lets the Free Flow Tour give kids the opportunity to bring their skating to the next level.”
Both Bowerbank and Price are three-time finalists on the Gatorade Free Flow Tour. Bowerbank also won events in Arizona in 2007 and 2008, while Price has won the Denver, Colo. event the past two years.
Out of a field of 34 BMX riders, Jeff Blevins won the BMX park competition and Nick Summerlot won the BMX vert contest Sunday at the Gatorade Free Flow Tour’s stop in Florence, Ky.
Seventeen-year-old Blevins from Hamilton, Ohio earned the BMX park victory at Ollies Skatepark after executing a flip whip over the hip and a front flip transfer during his winning run. Kevin Teets was second and Keenan Gutler finished in third place.
“This is awesome,” Blevins said. “I did the Gatorade Free Flow Tour before and didn’t even place, and now I get the chance to compete against the best at the Finals in Salt Lake City.”
In the BMX vert contest, 19-year-old Summerlot from Greencastle, Ind. used an almost-flawless run that included turndowns, no-handers and x-ups to secure the win.
“Yay for Finals!” Summerlot said. “I gave it everything I had today, and I’m tired but happy.”
With the wins, Bowerbank, Price, Blevins, and Summerlot earn an automatic bid into the Gatorade Free Flow Tour Finals that will take place at the Dew Tour’s Toyota Challenge, September 17-20, 2009.
