Nebraska based teen apparel retailer The Buckle, Inc. reported that comps for the four week period ending August 1, 2009 were up 2.8% from the same period last year and net sales increased 7.9% to $61.5 million from net sales of $57.0 million in 2008.
While these numbers are strong given the current economic picture, they fell below many analysts expectations as this marked the narrowest month over month gain in two years.
According to Barron’s:
That’s a period [the last two years] that encompassed a remarkable string of 22 consecutive months in which the apparel retailer managed to post double-digit gains in same-store sales. In eight of those months, it recorded comps of 20%-plus, including two with over 30% growth. It’s a feat made all the more eye-popping given the broad strokes in the consumer spending environment: a decided retrenchment in discretionary purchases, and repeated failures by rivals aimed at the same demographic to line its merchandising mix up with its customer base’s tastes.
