A new nationwide survey has been created to track the habits of surfers, including age ranges, average incomes and most importantly - where and when surfers across the U.S. spend their money, according to a story published December 15 on the San Diego Union Tribune’s Web site. Researchers behind the survey - which was initially developed by Surfing Magazine’s Matt Walker - hope to compile a massive database that will answer many questions about who surfers are and what they do
“‘While the NRA can tell you how many Americans own a gun and the Audubon Society can track the migratory patterns of 2,800 pairs of piping plovers,’ Walker wrote in his article, ‘we can’t tell you with any real accuracy how many surfers exist, much less where they live or what they spend.’
This is true, says Chad Nelsen, environmental director of the Surfrider Foundation, whose study of 1,000 surfers at Trestles in Northern San Diego County proved pivotal in proving to government officials the spending power and geographic information of surfers in the recent fight to prevent the extension of the 241 Toll Road in that area.”
