Surf Summit 17 Keynote Speakers Announced: Kirk Hammett & Robert Trujillo of Metallica!
You’ve been toiling at your craft for years, growing from a rank amateur into a seasoned professional, when the call finally comes. It’s the big time. And then reality hits. Can you step up to the next level without selling out? Will taking the money and all the additional visibility change what you have created? Do you risk all the authenticity and credibility you have worked so hard to gain? Do the potential rewards merit the risk?
Many of us have faced this business reality in the surf industry, and faced the opportunity and challenge in myriad ways yielding varying degrees of success. But so have many other creative forces, across fashion, art and music, and what can we learn from their experiences? SIMA is honored to present our Surf Summit 17 Keynote Speakers – Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo of the global rock icon Metallica.
Ranked 11th on Rolling Stone’s list of the Top 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, Kirk is a die-hard surfer who grew up in California. He was one of the founding members of the band Exodus before joining Metallica in 1983 as lead guitarist and a songwriter, and is responsible for creating some of the best known guitar riffs in rock history. Widely regarded as one of the planet’s top bassists and an avid surfer and skater, Robert had grown from his Venice Dogtown roots in Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves to his current role as a member of a commercial juggernaut with some of the music industry’s top ticket and merch sales.
From driving in a van, playing dirty clubs, to private jets and stadium shows, Kirk and Robert have successfully balanced professional growth with personal goals, adeptly walking the tightrope between family and fame, modesty and money, as Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Join us as we chat with Kirk and Robert about how they manages success, their passion for surfing, and what it’s like to perform with one of rock’s most legendary bands in front of millions of fans every year.
