Marine Biologists, Mexican Navy Investigate After Third Fatal Shark Attack on Pacific Coast

Marine biologists are investigating whether a series of three shark attacks over the past month are related or just a coincidence, after 21-year-old Osvaldo Mata Valdovinos was fatally attacked by a shark while surfing Friday, May 23 off the Pantla beach west of Acupulco, Mexico, according to a story posted Saturday, May 24 on the Telegraph.co.uk Web site. Another American surfer, 49-year-old Bruce Grimes of Texas, was bitten Saturday, May 25, on the arm by what he identified as “a large shark” while paddling into shore at Playa Linda beach, according to an article posted by Reuters. The Mexican Navy has now started searching for sharks along the country’s coastline in hopes of pinpointing the cause of such attacks, Reuters reports.
The incidents took place less than a month after San Franciso surfer Adrian Ruiz was fatally attacked by a shark while surfing at nearby Trocones beach in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. Ruiz died four days after a 66-year-old California tri-athlete, who was swimming off the coast near Encinitas, California, was fatally attacked by a White shark.
