Good on ‘em. The first surfer to have the balls to leave Al Merrick because the boards weren’t working.

Nice idiotic comment on Bobby’s tattoo you wanker! Give the kid credit for not going down the same path as most of the guys in his hood. The guy rips and obviously likes the DHD’s better than the “Al Generics”. And yeah, I’m sure he’s getting paid but so is everyone else.

Too true! I’ve had way more sh!tty C.I.’s than good ones. I’m all about the “Chilli’s” now.

Hey, his missus is from the Goldy, he spends down time on the Goldy, he now gets his boards from the Goldy… What can I say, cream always rises to the top!

Have you guys tried JC’s. Those boards work really well, and i think Shane Dorian rides them.

I agree with most of the opinions about Merrick! Merrick is way overrated.
He sold out toooooo! He was and is a great designer. But times change. Al has had a very ‘good run’. God bless him. He is a good man.
It’s sad that so many surfers are sheep. Even the magazines can’t seem to stop kissing Al’s ass. …I know, I know. Look who rides his boards! I say
monkey see, monkey do! Most surfers are not “original” in the water, they like to “pretend” that they are a “Curren” or “Slater”. The “CI” logos help them do that.
Dare I say, Some “Pro’s” even say that they think they will get more magazine coverage if they are on a Merrick. Go figure. (they are right)
Riding a Merrick in surfing is like driving a BMW on the freeway. It’s all just a “status” symbol. (yes I know that BMW’S are great cars, but most people buy them because they are a “status” symbol. That’s why I now see 80 year old grandmas driving them)
It’s time for change. I feel that the surfboard industry in America is in it’s finale years. It is all digital now. We can all shape our own boards now. It’s not
such a secret anymore. Just like what happened to the music industry (when things went digital) will happen to the Surfboard Industry. A five year old can now shape
a board on his or her computer. AKU SHAPER anyone???
So, don’t get all bent out of shape. None of these shapers are original, they all copy each other like car designers do.
Oh, And Merrick got Jordy. Why? because of the money. Some say he ($JORDY$) wanted JS to pay him THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND to ride the boards under contract. So he left and went to try some Merrick’s. (they seem to work better for $JORDY$ if he gets paid to ride them)
They all copy each others designs.
Best Regards:
erik!

i live in ventura, California 25 miles south of santa barbara where channel islands surfboards are, and i’ve bought about 4 new channel islands surfboards new, 2 custom and 2 off the rack and they all sucked, bought a 7′-4″ channel islands GUN off of Craig’s list and it worked good in at 8 FOOT PITAS POINT, POINT IS JUST THE PRO’S GET THE PRIMO MAGIC and they get them for free, I surf “surf prescriptions” boards and they work good every time.

If you think DHD's are handshaped your kidding yourself mate. You probably think your Al Merrick is handshaped by him as well… I'll let you in on a little secret… that firewire of yours wasnt handshaped either. FYI Handshaping is a board shaped with a planer from start, not a cnc profiled blank.
There are pros and cons to "computer shaped" boards the up side is being able to replicate a magic stick, the downside are "scrapers" who ghost shape for someone and then open their own label by copying rails and curves. These scrapers get investment money from somewhere and start giving away free boards. With that said, I dont see anything wrong with computer profiled boards as long as the Shaper who designed it, shapes it.
The bottom line nowadays is that a pro surfer will ride whatever works for them, they could be riding a board shaped by a 12 year old as long as it works… catch is they slap a DHD sticker over the real shapers logo cause of contract.
Sad but true.
These big name labels are following the corporate mentality, lower costs and overheads, buy cheaper materials, cheaper labor etc. Resulting in a board that looks like the surface of the moon after 3 surfs. There are heaps of great quality boards out there.
I ride D'Arcy boards cause they are the best quality available, always go good, last forever, and best of all, he shapes them. He is a world champion shaper, first title on his boards was Martin Potter, and most recently 3 or 4 world titles from Layne Beachley.

IS NOT THE BOARD, IS THE IGNORANT RIDING THEM. WAIT AS SECOND… HOW MANY MERRICK RIDERS ON THE FINALS AT THE US OPEN RIGHT NOW? DHD'S? CHILLI'S, LOST? KOOK SHAPE? DON'T BE MAD AT THE FOAM UNDER YOUR FEET, IF YOU CAN'T PUSH THE GAS PEDAL IS THE DRIVER NOT THE (BMW…)CAR.
