AS REPORTED IN THE AUGUST TRANSWORLD BUSINESS
Third Lair Skate Shop
Minneapolis, Minnesota

President: Mark Muller

Third Lair started off as a skate park for the grommets outside of downtown Minneapolis. As the park gained popularity and as more kids were breaking boards and cutting their skate sessions short, Third Lair decided to open a skate shop next to the park. Third Lair now hosts contests, skateboard camps and other events, and its philosophy is returning the love to brands that help support the park’s events, according to Third Lair’s President Mark Muller. Muller says the stores two best selling categories are neck and neck but after much thought here is what Muller came up with.
BEST SELLING CATEGORIES
1. Footwear
Although it was very close, Muller says shoes are the best selling category for Third Lair while Globe and Osiris are the two best sellers.
Best Selling Brand: Osiris
Osiris beats out Globe for Third Lair’s best selling brand according to Muller. “Osiris strongly supports all of our events and gives out a lot product,” he said. “Osiris hooks up our team riders, and young kids see them riding them and get influenced by them.”
Best Selling SKU: Clint Peterson Pro Model
Clint Peterson’s pro model sells the most at Third Lair and gets the most push from the employees at the shop. “Clint Peterson grew up in Minneapolis and grew up skating with Third Lair,” says Muller.
2. Skateboards
Third Lair has a 25,000-square-foot indoor skate park for when the weather is not ideal, and another skate park outside; It’s no wonder why skateboards are consistently selling well for this Midwest shop.
Best Selling Brand: Almost
Foundation, Toy Machine, Almost and Blind are the best selling brands at Third Lair, but of the four, kids are asking for Almost decks the most, according to Muller.
Best Selling SKU: Almost Uber Light
Muller says he definitely attributes Almost’s success to their new technology. “Our main clientele is younger kids and they are always asking for Almost’s Uber Light.”
3. T-shirts
Third Lair has a unique philosophy in that they like to focus primarily on hard good companies that support their events even when it comes to what soft goods they are pushing in the shop. T-shirts account for the most sales, says Muller.
Best Selling Brand: Deluxe
Deluxe gives Third Lair the most support, so employees tend to push those t-shirts the most.
Best Selling SKU: Spitfire
Hands down, kids can’t get enough of Spitfire, according to Muller.
