As the big guns were sounding off down the road at Snowbasin for the final stop of the Dew Tour, the fourth round of the six-event 2012 TransWorld TransAM was showcasing the skills of Park City’s local riders in one of the most creative contests on the scene.

Celebrating its 10th year of fun with partner High Cascade Snowboard Camp, the TransAM is an amateur tour that invades progressive park resorts across the country, with the 2012 schedule showcasing Waterville Valley, Mountain Creek, Powder Ridge, Park City, Northstar, and Bear Mountain.

The event pits 100 local riders against each other in a jam format for tons of prizes from sponsors Skullcandy, HCSC, anon, Zumiez, Ride, Coal, Giro, Drop, and Muscle Milk, but the coolest part of the contest is the course.

Local park builders are provided general direction on incorporating signature ideas and features, like the anon rail, a Coal beanie made of snow, the Zumiez couch, and the Ride smoke machine, but outside of that, they’re given carte blanche to get as creative as possible, and the host resorts battle it out for the most innovative park of the season.

While Bear won last year, Park City is definitely in the hunt in 2012. As we rolled out to the course at 7 a.m. on Feburary 11, the park crew was putting the finishing touches on the course, including an urban set up littered with trash and a mannikin warming himself over a smoking barrel, a mini pipe with a ton of features on the deck, a spine to beanie landing, and a 15-foot high dreadie head topped with a coal beanie and a corrugated mustache jib.

“How many opportunities do you get to do something like this?” replied Park City Terrain Parks Director Jeremy Cooper when asked why they put so many resources into making this insane course for one day of riding. “Everybody on the crew loves this contest,” continued Cooper, as most of the 12 members of the park crew helped put the final touches on the course.

TransAM was originally founded as a partnership between High Cascade Snowboard Camp, and while attendance has ebbed and flowed, the series has seen strong growth over the past couple seasons as both partners have increased their commitment. The Park City 100 rider roster filled up a week early, and plans include growing the series for next season.

“We’re looking at expanding  to eight or 10 stops in 2013 and eventually 12 in 2014,” explains TransWorld Events Marketing Director Scott Desiderio. “There are so many good kids out there, as well as a few key markets we feel like we’re missing. Our goal for the TransAm has always been to bring fun and creativity to amateur snowboarding.  We want to make sure we’re bringing that to as many of those riders as we possibly can.”

“This is a great opportunity for us to extend our partnership with TransWorld and the event sponsors— Skullcandy is a huge partner for us,” explains Park City Events & Public Relations Manager Meisha Lawsom. “The local community loves it—it gives the kids something different to ride and gives them the opportunity for larger exposure with TransWorld Snowbarding.”

The event got underway at 11 as 100 shreds went head to head, sometimes literally, in an hour jam session. At the end of the first melee, the judges had the unenviable job of cutting sixty riders, but at least they got to enjoy some free Cobra Dogs during the break.

The finals featured another hour-long session and the kids stepped to the variety of features, picking ever more creative lines and tricks as the hour wound down and the kids battled it out for some serious prizes.
