Out Of Bounds Skate Shop, Reno Nevada
Manager Jamie Locks
Owner Kathy Griffin
Kathy Griffin, a native of Burbank, California, moved to Reno, Nevada back in the mid 90s and one of the first things she noticed was the area’s lack of skate and snow shops, especially with its proximity to the mountains, she said. In 1996, Griffin decided to change that by opening Out of Bounds Boardshop, a shop catering to skate and snow, which seemed to gather a following with locals. In 2002, the shop moved to a new, 3,800-square-foot space, and despite the weakened economy, Griffin says the shop continues to be successful, although over the last few years snow sales have dropped off some, while skate sales are becoming increasingly steady. We had a chance to talk to Griffin and manager/buyer Jamie Locks to find out what’s been selling over the past few months at Out of Bounds.
TOP SELLING CATEGORIES
1. Decks
“Definitely decks are what’s selling right now,” says Locks
Brand: Deathwish
“Deathwish is the hottest right now,” Locks says.
SKU: N/A
“Pretty much all the pro-models and team stuff does really well as long as it’s the kids’ right size.”
2. Apparel
Many shops have solid T-shirt sales, while a few mention that denim is their strength. Very rarely do shops report they are successful in both categories, but that seems to be the case at Out of Bounds.
Brand: RVCA
“All of the RVCA specialty shirts do well, but denim does really well for us, too, and that sells year round,” says Locks.
SKU: Leo Romero/Kevin Long Artist Series
“They [Leo Romero and Kevin Long] always design their own shirts and those are the ones that fly out the door the quickest.”
3. Footwear:
Although it was a toss-up between accessories, especially due to sky-rocketing sunglasses sales, and footwear, in the end Out of Bounds has been moving more shoes, Locks says.
Brand: Fallen
It was another close call with brands, but Fallen ultimately came out on top, while C1RCA put up a strong fight with it’s Cero shoe. “That (Cero) always does really well with us, but fallen they have the Forte, which does also does really well.”
SKU: Forte
The Forte features heavy-duty canvas and suede uppers and vulcanized sole construction, according to Fallen’s official Web site.

Out Of Bounds Reno is awesome. I bought my whole snowboard set-up there a little over a year ago. Bummer their snowboard sales went down, it shows in their selection of boards, but i still try to support them by stopping by and purchasing a movie or something here and there. Support your local boardshop people!
