Buckle up surf dorks because there’s only one month left before Transworld Business names the 2008 Surf Exposure-Meter Champion. With only one month worth of mags to tally it looks like Jordy Smith’s 1,800 point lead might be enough to give him the crown, but it’s too close to call. The fate of the world’s finest surf athletes lies within the December issues of Transworld SURF, Surfing, and Surfer. Less that one cover separates Jordy Smith and Mick Fanning, and the all-time Surf Exposure-Meter points leader Bruce Irons made a serious late-season move—he scored nearly 10,000 points this month.

Actually, the only major swing in the top five this month came from Irons out scoring Jamie O’Brien by 8,700 points, which allowed Bruce to slide up to third overall and push J.O.B. down to number five.

Other than that the entire top ten was pretty stagnant. Timmy Reyes made a move up from 12 to ten with the help of some ads from Vans, but overall an uneventful month as far as major late-season movers. That doesn’t mean that things can’t heat up.

With every team manager, marketing director, and surf agent out there making one final push to guarantee their athletes get top rankings for the year, it could go to anyone. We’ve seen some very high-scoring single-month performances from guys like Bruce Irons, Rob Machado, and Kelly Slater, so it’s still anybody’s ballgame at this point. You can never rule out Slates, especially after clinching his ninth world title, but there’s only one month left, and there can be only one Exposure-Meter champion.

That being said, do not miss the big year-end extravaganza coming in next month’s installment of The World Famous Surf Exposure-Meter!
