An underwater volcano erupted in Tonga today, causing a massive 7.9 earthquake. Experts are saying a tsunami is unlikely, but it can’t be ruled out yet. The New York Times has the story (which, let’s face it, I got from  boiltheocean):

“The quake caused a stir in Tonga, but it’s not clear yet whether any resulting waves caused coastal damage or injuries. (Updates coming.) Wire services had reported earlier today that scientists were heading toward the volcano to do surveys. The eruption had been building for several days.”

I’m no surf expert, but I’d imagine the falling ash and smoke is gonna make surfing in nearby Fiji a bummer for a minute.
