La Jolla Group announced that the company is opening the doors to its first O’Neill Clothing flagship store, located in Anaheim, California’s GardenWalk shopping district. The 3,350 square foot store features the latest collection of O’Neill clothing, footwear, accessory, and wetsuits.
The company hired Verdego Design to outfit the interior of the store, which incorporates several interesting design elements. Verdego Co-founder Tatiana Barhar, a native of Chilé, has worked with several companies in the industry including Quiksilver, Vans, DC, Reef, and Stüssy. According to O’Neill, the company used ecologically friendly materials through out the store.
The cash wrap is centrally located and O’Neill is calling the area surrounding it “The Hut” because it draws cues from Jack O’Neill’s original shop in Santa Cruz.
O’Neill had another area of the store called “The Wave Wall” designed to capture the surf essence of the brand. The idea is to give shoppers the feeling of standing under a peeling wave. The “Wave Wall” is
backed by a large underwater image of a kelp forest, which the company says supports the ideals of
the Jack O’Neill Sea Odyssey and underwater education programs.
Aside from aesthetically appealing features—like lamps made from thousands of drinking straws that embody sea urchins, and a cash wrap covered in hand painted O’Neill images—the store is built to function as an efficient retail environment. Coolest feature? The fitting rooms feature walls and cushions that are made of O’Neill neoprene wetsuit material.

So they statred out with shops in Santa Cruz, and decided anahiem would be a great spot. That is the lamest thing i ever heard. If i worked for them, i’d quit. Way to completly abandon your roots.
July 15th, 2008 at 11:42 am
They said that they did it in Anaheim so that they wouldn’t take the business away from the “core” surf shops on the coast. I think that was a good idea, and I don’t have a problem with it.
July 15th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
they own killer dana and have pretty much kept it as is with all companies representing. you must have limited knowledge. if you think they are a sell out you must not wear very many clothes since everybody is basically sold in every mall in america….
July 15th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Who has proof that they bought Killer Dana? Yeah, we all hear the same rumors, but neither one of them will admit it! And neither one is public so they don’t have to!
Brad…Dudebro, I challenge you to prove that LJG owns Killer Dana. Indulge us with your knowledge.
July 15th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Have you ever even been to the “coast” last time i checked it was called the beach.
July 15th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
If somebody bought us, can I please stop coming to work? O’Neill store looks nice, but I like our sandy surf shop on the beach (which we still own by the way). Oh yeah, if you always thought it was too hot in our Dana Point store, then check out the AC we are putting in right now! Shop in comfort and we have so many boards (and boardshorts of course).
If you want to know what’s really going on you should order some stuff at http://www.killerdana.com and we will give you a secret message after you check out (minimum purchase of $100).
Now back to work everyone. Surf is flat, so get something done today besides gossip.
July 15th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
At least we don’t work for Rip Curl…Aussie Kooks.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Rip Curl is the ‘ultimate surfing company’ and more true to it’s roots than any of the other surf brands. But we wouldn’t expect the US to appreciate anything that wasn’t of their own creation!!!
July 15th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
looks like they are scrambling to pay Jordy smith tha 8 million dollar contract they signed him for and o neill is lame, dudes body glove is back and better than ever!
July 15th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Well Said. U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A!!!!
July 15th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
You can’t quit if they already fired you.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Wow…..what a positive group of people! The surf industry is full of like-minded people that share the same passion, and all you guys can do is sling shit back and forth about how your brand is better than the next. So lame. O’Neill got started by a badass, they still have great product, and they just topened a store. Rip Curl was started by a badass, the’ve got two world champs right now, and they have plenty of stores. Body Glove was started by a badass, makes rad wetsuits, and the point is …. none of the guys that started these companies would be wasting their time writing negative commetns with nothing behind them!
July 15th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
i prefer a hot ass to a bad ass
July 15th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
so that’s why you guys still don’t pay your bills…net never anyone?…

La Jolla Group did buy Killer Dana as Killer Dana was about to go under due to a management of folks who think they know everything but don’t know much at all and in the end needed a cash infusion. Not to mention as always they are not tried and true culture loyalists just as the management at Oneill isn’t since Kelly Gibson left which in my opinion and the others of major industry veterans.
It will be interesting to see what happens when the North American Oneill Licensee agreement comes up as the Euro’s (current owners of the trademark) could find a good crew here in the US and cut out the middle man and even have a stronger brand with more authentic leadership.
Should be interesting.
July 16th, 2008 at 8:29 am
With those Euro kooks owning the O’neill trademark, the future looks scary for the brand. Just an opinion.
July 16th, 2008 at 8:43 am
That is exactly the reaction i was hoping for as i sat in my cubicle bored as hell. i could care less about any of this nonsense, but i can tell you are really passionate about it. Thanks for making my wednesday.

I think if the Euros took O’Neill?THE AUTHENTIC AMERICAN SURF COMPANY?away from LGJ they’d be making a HUGE mistake. Have you ever been to ISPO? Have you ever seen the O’Neill booth in Germany? It isn’t the same animal over there. They do shoes, snow hardgoods, wind surfing shit … it’s kind of weird. The only reason that brand has value is because it’s viewed as THE American Surf Brand (Quik, Bong, Rip Curl) are all aussie brands originally. Yeah, Volcom and Hurley are US brands, but they don’t have the heritage of JACK O’NEILL! We’re talking about a guy that had a stroke not too long ago and weathered it with no consequences because he’s so tough he just calmly told his family he was having a stroke, and then was fine a day later. The guy invented the wetsuit! He surfed the lane big before anyone and he did it in trunks. I’m just saying …we just lost Budweiser to the Euros and our economy might be shit right now … but if they try and take O’Neill and run with it without LJG then they’ll fall flat on their faces and the specialty retailers will be the ones to suffer ultimately!!! You euros come on over and shop at jack’s while the dollar is weak, but you’ll keep your hands off our heritage brands … if you know what’s good for you.

I am curious if our pioneers would be excited to see forums of this nature. Surfers and Non-Surfers are running businesses selling product to Surfers and Non-Surfers. Deal with it, and be comfortable in your own skin. Live the Aloha spirit, be excited about another person’s success, and move on.
July 16th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
WOW O’Neill! I have to hand it to you. That store is amazing. You raised the bar for the industry. I don’t usually give props to my competitors but it’s worthy. Congrats to all. (PS- Your management is among the best in the industry. A massive improvement in 2 years) Now back to trying to kick your asses…
July 17th, 2008 at 6:22 am

Pay your bills and maybe the industry will start supporting you guys again.
You know who gets screwed when you guys decide not to pay for the product you get shipped - us reps!
July 18th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Hey RAD we don’t call everyone kooks. Aussies are cool blokes. It’s just the kooky Euro’s and how weird they can make a brand (OXBOW????), and they just don’t understand the US market.
July 18th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
of course you are going to knock the jordy deal, but it is probably because you or your company didn’t get there first. now who’s lame. easy to throw stones when you have nothing to lose.
July 18th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
the euro folks who took over o’neill don’t control the us license, so things looking bleak is wrong…wrong…wrong. the euros control the look/feel and never will, unless the license walks away, which ain’t happen anytime soon.
July 19th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Liquid Militia check it out
and no Liquid Militia is not owned by la jolla group they are sell out free!
July 26th, 2008 at 8:35 am
They needed money to pay up. So yes it is true that they got bought by O’neill, and they also tried to have Swell buy them. I think it’s funny that “Lounge” denies it though. At the end of the day bad people have bad karma….
It’s not surprising though this is the way things are in the industry right now. It’s become too polarized. We’ve all lost sight of what really matters, SURFING and a sense of FAMILY that you get when you still walk into your local surf shop. Most reps don’t even come into the “real” shops anymore because we don’t do enough “volume” for them. Everyone is driven by greed, and most of the surf industry is run by people who are too jaded to remember what it’s all about anyway.
I miss the good ole days hanging out at my local shop which is and has been core for the last 28 years.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe it wasn’t an actual buyout but just a temporary fix?
