On July 27 the much-discussed ‘Shaun White For Target’ apparel line hit all 1,613 Target stores across 47 states nationwide, and Target has launched an ad campaign on prime time television to support the line. The partnership announcement between White and Target came on the heels of news that Volcom—White’s former streetwear sponsor—had not renewed his contract, and sparked a ton of controversy. Message boards across the Net have impassioned postings from users both for and against White’s deal with the mass-market retail chain. But regardless of how you feel about the line’s launch, if you’ve seen the commercials you’ve got to admit—they are pretty damn funny!

It’s an amazing strategy. So many people in the snowboarding community were dising him for selling out to target, including myself, but this self deprecating approach is gona work well.

Also I think it a bit of a stab at Laird and Wonderwall.

Yeah- I caught those Fixtures on the wall and thought that was brilliant subliminal ad on to the commercial.

This kid is gonna sell a shit ton for Target, but man it’s painful to watch him speak.

Great timing really, where the economy is and all, you would think those penny pinching folks out there, who want to stoke the kids out will be flocking to target to buy this product for the kids.

MORE POWER TO SHAUN DO WHAT U GOT TO DO IM TIRED OF THE CORE BIG WIGS TARGET IS A GOOD STORE SCREW VOLCOM.
July 29th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Somehow I don’t think Volcom really sees Target as a competitor

G’Day Shaun… Fair dikum value at Target…Good to see a rider getting some dollars instead of the lucky two or three families who got in on the float of Volcom… or do I mean Quiksilver?
The industry will continue to change for the better, meaning the guys who actually do the ripping will finally make some just financial reward, surely that is ok buy everyone who actually rides out there?
July 30th, 2008 at 8:35 am
now they will…
July 30th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
sucks for the core shops, but wait… shaun white ISN’T core, so all should be good. i don’t see this hurting anyone but Kohl’s and the tony hawk stuff
July 30th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Shaun is a MADMAN!
And I’d be very surprised if it doesn’t hurt the core brands. Skinny jeans, woven shirts, hoodies, and screen tee’s put together by probably some of the best cut and sew people in the world at a ridiculously low price point; corporate advertising budget which are funny, entertaining, and a little weird. Plus the declining economy has got me and my ?CORE BROS? strapped for $$$. Core or not core the times are a changing.

these aren’t really that funny…i wanna like shaun, he’s an amazing rider and a total KOOOOOK

August 3rd, 2008 at 8:27 pm
This is almost as funny as the ads.

Again … cool “shop” sponsor !!
probably should help some of your buddy who own a REAL snowboard/skateboard store and put sticker on your skate & winterstick !!
hey volcom !! good move to let go SW off your team … im going to buy more of your stuff from now on !
even sheckler … got a real store sponsorship
im sure corporate riders can make some sweet money and still help the medium and small retailers to grow …
thank you for teaching north american kid to put their parent money in the target machine !!!!!
store buyer from canada

dude above is kinda incoherent. does anyone know who wrote these spots? was this done in-house or did target work with an agency?
August 5th, 2008 at 10:25 am
The ads are brilliant. And Volcom didn’t “let SW off the team” - there was just no way they could compete w/Target $$$$ and Shaun’s desire to become a multi-billionare.
I LOVE TARGET!!! THE LOGO ROCKS! THE CLOTHING ROCKS! AND THERE’S A STARBUCKS INSIDE!!! WWOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! F-YAAAA!!!!!!!!!
August 6th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
you people are ruled by marketing…they couldn’t have been tear-drop shaped brass art installation?

ok-selling out is so 90’s. Athletes and the sports they play would NEVER have progressed as far as they have without money and the support global business brings. ALL OF US has dreamed of hitting it big-becomng a rock star, movie star-essentially getting paid for what we love. The irony lies in the fact that MOST of us were drawn to these sports/cultures because we were accepted and not judged. So whomever JUDGES have now become what they hated in the first place. Listen to yourselves…

TARGET IS AWESOME!!!
-they have great clothes for amazing prices!

Oh yeah, dont forget the shit attitude and wack customer service you get from the majority of core shops. I have an idea! How about we try to make people feel like an idiot for spending money in some core shop by treating them like they are a poser and don’t belong there. When Target starts selling more and more core brands I will be first in line not only to buy, but to laugh at all the little core shops who are too “core” to give a damn about their customers.
