Dusty Payne is as hot as a pistol, and his campaign to the top of the Surf Exposure-Meter is gaining momentum.
Covers, photo trips, gigantic fin chucks, and impossible airs have boosted young Payne into surf stardom nearly overnight. In September, Payne posted 4,925 points, significantly closing in on his leaders. Scoring the cover of Surfer didn’t hurt his campaign either. Three days before that mag shipped to the printer a photo came across the light table and was an “instant
cover” according to the mag’s editors.
But Payne isn’t the only surfer making a late third-quarter strike. Andy Irons pulled through with 4,300 points in September, more than doubling current leader Kelly Slater’s September score. Slater still enjoys an 8,850 point lead, however, and there are only three months left of magazines to tally. There were several other moves made this month worthy of commendation as well. We’re officially entering the fourth quarter of the world famous Surf Exposure-Meter, so stand up, have a stretch, and adjust your laundry, because the next three months you’re going to be on the edge of your seat.
