On October 11–12, hundreds of shapers, surfers, and surfboard enthusiasts gathered in Del Mar, California for the second annual Sacred Craft surfboard show. It’s like ASR or Surf Expo, except it’s only surf hardgoods and instead of retailers making the rounds it’s the public—although there were a few retailer spottings for sure. Aside from booths full of boards there were shaping seminars, live shaping booths, and videos playing in a tent outside the venue. All-in-all it was a pretty cool event. It only cost $5 to get in the door, but it cost $9 to park—which is kind of lame—but the general consensus from vendors was positive. Most board builders said being able to interact with consumers on a one-on-one basis, share their brand messages directly to the public, and show their latest-and-greatest to a captive audience was worth the money to exhibit.
