Catching Up With: Jason Bergman, VP of Sales at Allyance

Earlier in the month rumors began circulating that Allyance, a San Clemente, California-based apparel and outerwear company, was pulling the plug. The news came as a surprise to some because the brand appears to have made inroads into several well-established retail accounts in the U.S. over the past year.

Transworld Business wanted to get to the bottom of the matter. Vice President of Sales Jason Bergman (Shown above on right, with President Dale Rehberg, left) says there were in fact some recent changes made within the company, but that there are no plans to cease operations.

A couple of weeks ago, there was some talk that Allyance might be done. Is the brand finished, or have there just been some changes?

Allyance is growing fast, we finished our fourth quarter with an unprecedented number of new doors and just added several industry leading sales reps. We had to look at 2009 very carefully with the way the economy is to make sure we do things the right way next year. We had to make some strategic changes to make the brand more profitable and still provide our accounts with the windows, P.O.P., and marketing that we gave them before.

What kind of changes? Layoffs, strategic changes, etc?

The brand direction is staying the same, but all of the rest are true. We had to make very difficult decisions to keep the brand alive in these tough times.  The economy sucks and we needed to be able to weather the storm.

What capacity was the Blackhart Brotherhood serving the brand, and how has that changed?

We hired and then partnered with them. We formed a new business, The Blackhart Allyance. We contributed the brand and they contributed their design firm. The merger didn’t work. We helped each other a ton. They are seriously gifted guys, but our partnership was not working out and it’s done. We think we are both better now than where we were, but it’s over. We worked with The Blackhart Brotherhood for a little over a year, before them we used the Machine, and lots of inhouse and freelance people in between. We still use the Machine and hope to be able to work with the Blackheart guys in the future. Both did a really great job, but there came a point where we felt it was best to bring everything in house again. We feel like we want to reign things in and focus on the segments of the line we do best, and introduce our denim and fine tune our outerwear. We want to make even more of an impact, and focus on what we are great at before we branch out again.

Why were those changes made?

We just could not see eye to eye with our partners. We tried very hard. That’s it and we are moving forward.

How will those changes affect the company overall?

We are looking forward to a great 2009. We are going to be lean and mean, focus on our core and operate under a well thought-out plan. We are even more valuable to accounts and customers now with all the saturated distribution from other brands.

How will this affect retailers that sell your product?

It will not affect them at all, accept we will be more focused and more profitable, which will tie back into them. We will continue to support them, grow with them and deliver an exceptional product. You take a great retailer partner like Dickie at Spyder in Hermosa Beach, CA who has had an Allyance window at both stores, and one fixture. In 2009 we want to go out and get them another fixture for their other store and that goes for all our other retailers.

We will also focus even more on the web this coming year, we have some very unique out-of-the-box stuff up our sleeve that will benefit all our online dealers, then trickle down the brick and mortar guys, and ultimately our customer.

Has there been a change in ownership/ investors?

The brand is still owned privately and has the same owner since its inception.

Will the offices, warehouse, etc be moving?

Everything remains in tact, we are actually remodeling and building an audio room for our web stuff. The parent company will be taking over our SoCal space and remodeling it for Allyance. We will have the same addresses in NYC and SoCal and both warehouses remain the same.

ALLRIGHT ! Hell , i’ll get the comment ball rolling. None of the above is the ” word on the street ” in S.C anyway and yes the gossip is as reliable as anything that only one side of the coin tells. Above has vested interest in thier side. Let’s hear some of the Brotherhood’s side please .

As for the direct above ; you dudes had no exposure whatsoever unil you retained the Blackhart Brotherhood and then as mentioned above you seemed to actually have some good rev under J.A.

Why would you REALLY jepordize that in time of crisis? Sounds more like a Non Participant V.C. behind the curtain to me. But , the jury is still out.

  • Anonymous Says:

I work at LSS and we slay ALLYANCE out of there…looking forward to the new! NO GENERATION!

  • anonymous Says:

Cool ; Allyance can replace Volcom for you guys , oh wait , forgot , have you let Volcom in on the new ?

  • the 1st. anonymous Says:

“Allyance is slaying it “. thanks , that is my point exactly , why break it , Blackhart was working .

  • ~~~ Says:

blackhart made allyance. now it’s screwed

  • Anonymous Says:

    ALLYANCE is rad! Sounds exciting

  • hatestreet Says:

Sweet, the question is how or why do these brands survive year to year?

crap brands need to go away. hopefully this economic downturn will finish these kooks off…

  • the 1st. anonymous Says:

Exactly !The post exclaiming how rad Allayance are claiming Blackhart Allayance. The ???? remains , why trade a proven formula for shot in the dark ? The Blackhart guys are super talented and they don’t just live it, it is part of thier DNA. NYC influence is rad , but boardshorts , not so much. Allyance’s strength seemed to be B.Shorts , why F@#$ it up .

  • Newport 54th Says:

Allyance is going to be the next big thing. No one has even heard of those Blackheart people.

  • Venice jetty Says:

Allyance had some cool stuff at 9 star in LA, but the designs seemed dated, I bought some pants recently from there and they ripped. Allyance is smart for doing what they did, I hope the shop gets more stuff that is better soon, I will still buy it.

  • Surfin the inside Says:

Allyance won’t be the “same” brand as what the Brotherhood created. One look at the photo of Reberg and Bergrman compared to a photo of Arnold and Munson tells me that the branding of no generation and rogue heros came from the brotherhood.

I don’t think that these two will be able to maintain that sort of branding. They’ll have to change it up or leave it the exact same because you can’t fake that sort of thing.

Bringing “everything back in house” That’s the last thing you do when you axe half of the staff. It’s way cheaper to outsource in that sort of business environment.

  • NBC Says:

Why have I never heard of this brand? Put them in a bodybag johnny!

  • the 1st. anonymous Says:

Try getting off the penis-ulla newps 54 ; Blackhart is Allyance until somebody decided they as good as the guyz actually making the difference , then it’s , thank’s for getting me this , see ya , would’nt want to be ya ! Jason / Johnny / Chris have the talent.

  • the 1st. anonymous Says:

surfin inside ; thanks for getting it !go to the head of the class and get yourself a set wave !

  • killratbastards Says:

the brotherhood got played like a fiddle! who gave a shit about allyance a year ago? exactly. how bout all the riders that got axed, ask them how they feel about allyance……nothings changing? they got rid of the core of their operation, the guys who put it on the map! how is nothing going to change? sooner or later the truth will come out……alot of people got seriously screwed over on this

  • DJ Says:

Give be a break! These guys are a joke! The company is full of strong armed salesmen that think they are hot shit.
Now, that said. They had a good product as far as the textile thing goes. The designs and “art” were kind of a joke. It seems more like an urban brand then a surf brand. (and that’s O.K.)

Also, most of the people we worked with with the brand were more into themselves then the brand itself. The first reps were a complete joke. They were very arrogant and seem to have forgotten who the costumer was. (these were only the reps in my territory-I am sure that Allyance has good reps in other territories that work for them) …But some of these reps had zero clue on how to treat a buyer and or manager in a surfshop. It’s almost like they were “born rich” and could careless about the vendors that purchased their product.

As for “how the brand moves”? I found in our area hardcore surfers stayed away from it, The tourist loved the T’s because “they felt soft”. Some hardcore surfers would like some of the dress shirts or sweaters, but would not buy them because ALLYANCE had a habit of sewing cartoon wales or the number 13 on them. Most surfers thought it was “a little much”. (I know that some find this “new” and “exciting” just like when “day glow” came out in the 80″s-But I found most thought it was stupid to ruin a good shirt by sewing a cartoon wale on the sleeve) In other words ALLYANCE was not Volcom or RVCA. But the “marketing team” was trying to get the word out their that they were the new Volcom or RVCA. (OR AT LEAST IT SEAMED THEY WERE)

The marketing of ALLYANCE? In my opinion was a complete waist of money and a big joke. They just had a bunch of money to burn it seemed. (oh, and before everyone gets all upset and angry about my opinion and tells me what a genius the guy who does this marketing is-I know who he is-the Von Zipper guy-but I do not like his ALLYANCE themed ads-and yes I know it was a “concept” thing were the guy go’s into the bar and comes out the door after drinking a few and singing with the band) big deal! The ads sucked in my opinion.

So, Who cares. This economy will probably kick the ALLYANCE ass!

  • Anonymous Says:

The brand was really starting to get legs with the Blackheart behind it. Its a shame that the money guy is some NY kook who wanted to be cool and be in the action sports industry. Didn’t realize it actually was going to take time and money. Poor Dale and Jason. Those guys will be out on the street soon enough. Better now Blackheart than later1

  • jd Says:

Blackhart gave it legs ; it now has some poser dude in a beanie that looks to be trying to steal Jason’s Steez . Shame on you steez stealer , grow a pair and tell your money flunky who really got Allyance even noticed .

  • nigheist Says:

J’s got steez for days and is a hell of a nice guy to boot! But at the end of the day, its about the bottom line.

I for one would have liked to have seen what the BB/Allyance collaboration could have done had it survived one more year. I think they would have done big things. I’m predicting they will end up like Ezekiel did after Vinnie & crew left - the slow train to nowhere.

Can’t slam Dale, because he is a nice guy as well. Sounds like this call came straight from the $$$ guy in NY.

  • second that ,,, Says:

nigheist, you are dead on. I understand brands need to trim fat, but I think Allyance just lopped off all of its muscle. Goodbye tight design, goodbye strong brand message, goodbye Rogue Heros.

HOw many times can this happen before NY (or anywhere else for that matter) money guys learn that they can’t throw money down, play actionsports buff for a year or two, and expect ROI?

Bad news for Allyance, but I’m very eager to see what the talents of the Blackhart Brotherhood will tackle next!

  • vegasbaby Says:

The arrogance of Allyance is ming boggling. He is right that Dickie @ Spyder is the real deal but i would give odds that the Brotherhood had a great deal to do with getting those windows and reps.
The reps will stay until the money dries up and i would wager they have lost confidence , the whole sales pitch was the talent of the Brotherhood , not Allyance .

  • Anonymous Says:

Their commercial on Fuel was sick! The whole vision of the brand was blackhart! Agreed- their arrogance is incredible. Almost the entire infrastructure of Allyance is gone now.

  • sean Says:

Funny how most people who are commenting on here are using the word “ARROGANCE” to describe Allyance. I agree! Maybe they should have named their brand “ARROGANCE”. These guys all thought they were hot shit. Their customer service was horrible to say the least. They would promise things and never deliver.
The Reps (some) were spoiled little rich kids still on daddy’s dollar. They did not have a clue on how to work with buyers or managers. They would tell you “how great their brand was” and then we would watch it sit on the shelf and not sell. We tried to tell the rep that their ads were not working in the market, they tolled us we were “not cool enough” and did not “understand” advanced marketing. (even with 3 of our buyers who have advanced marketing degrees)
They had this “you are either with us, or against us” type of mentality. They also had very strong armed sales tactics.
I agree that Jason is a good guy, but the people working under him did not have a clue. They had a very immature sales force.

Oh, and the stuff they put out was lukewarm at best. It was way to “logo driven” with computer graphics. Don’t get me wrong, some of the stuff looked good, But every line usually has a few good pieces.

As far as “going the way of Ezekiel”? Once Vinnie left (or was kicked out) Ezekiel got way better. They have a good vision and smart branding. (not tacky).
And Mada? Mada has one of the best marks in the entire industry. But the stuff is made cheap and has inconsistent quality. The designers have this love affair with skulls. Some of the designs look very cheap and cheesy. And again, The ads are very inconsistent. Vinnie is a good guy. I very much respect his vision. But Mada needs some help. (at least in the design area)

So, everything said. I sincerely wish Allyance lot’s of luck. Hope the guy in New York (who retired in his 30’s) didn’t lose all his money in the mortgage scandals. He may have to go back to work again.

  • vegasbaby Says:

Sean, You f@#$ing own it ! At last something from somebody obviously in the trenches who is paying attention. I hope the Brands are listening .

  • anonymous Says:

The comments of the VP of Sales do not even resemble the comments on the post , something is rotten in Denmark here or in this case it appears , NYC ?

  • s.d. shop owner Says:

Where is Bob Skolberg , ex Rusty V.P. , in all this ? I thought he was head of sales at Allyance and an owner as well?

  • s.d. shop owner Says:

And ! talk about real , Bob invented bombing hills on skate contraptions.

  • o.c. shop owner Says:

Just read the above and the interview .

First thing comes to my mind is , ” this economy sucks ” let’s get rid of the talent and REMODEL the frigging office ! give us a break Bergman.

Keep it real Allyance, your customers will respect you a little more.

  • vegasbaby Says:

Now that is insight. Does Sean work for you ?

  • LYLES Says:

Allyance is going to be much better off without all those guys there, the blackheart guys have been “parted ways” with a lot, to put it nicely, and those ads sucked so bad! Is anyone really suprised here? Cmon.

Go get em Allyance! Best of luck to you

  • a Hmmm wannabe Says:

o.k. lyles , since it is all about the numbers :

    31 post
    3 for Allyance
    28 for Blackhart

yep , you are dead right , Allyance is better off , now they enjoy those newly remodeled offices without all those pesky accounts calling . Maybe they should switch to interior decorating.

  • surfgrl21 Says:

Isn’t this interview about ALLYANCE? All I know is that Allyance is awesome and I love your guys stuff! I am glad to hear that you are trying to make your brand even better. I will keep selling your stuff in my shops! :)

  • a Hmmm wannabe Says:

Surfgirl21 ; Did you read any of the above comments , at all?

That is the whole point , i will say it slow so you might get it .

the Allyance in the stores now was designed and marketed by the Black hart Brother hood ! ! ! Get it ?

  • kalani Says:

To Allyance: Best thing you could have done. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for ya.

  • Santa Monica Says:

DOnt know what all the blogish is here. Allyance has worked great with our shop and come through on everything. We are giving them a build out and will continue to support them, our rep always great. Seems like there are some haters on here with too much time over the weekend. I think they can do it

  • kio Says:

Allyance make cool stuff. Not selling to department store like other brands. I love snowboard jacket i bought from hanger 94.

  • baconhater Says:

the haters here are the one’s who have come to hate the act of enlisting talened people who put thier heart and soul and talent in a Brand , only to have it ripped away as soon as the money monkeys think they can do without them .

  • Slayer Says:

I’ve seen these guys come and go once before.. This time around they came out with Big Trucks all decked out, hell they even offered to give me the truck to drive around weekends where I live to draw some attention and all at contest and around the scene.. Maybe less flashiness, so they can save some $$, less free product could be a good thing. Supporting their stores that bring them the $$ should be the priority and everything second.. The black heart thing, good? I don’t know.. Look at lets say MCD….. What happened? They started it back up and now wheres it? The shitter…. They are talented and all and helped grow Allyance for sure. But a parting ways may be a change in direction, but lets let the clothing speak for itself when its released! I don’t sit here and rock Allyance gear, but I would support the brand for sure. Let the brand speak for itself and see what it brings…..

  • baconhater Says:

slayer presents some good points but the Brand and Product speaking for itself got thrown out the window when Bergman decided to do the interview and reveal the priority of remodeling the f@#kin’ offices, time will tell but it sure lacks substance so far.

  • baconhater Says:

p.s. i will admit this , this post has 40 comments , the VF VP, Gatto , has 4 ! something is happening here , i hope .

  • Rasta man Says:

Allyance is a great brand, didnt here any rumors and glad they are doing fine. Stoked

  • OK Computer Says:

Remodeling for an audio room? Seems like they will start taking the web more seriously. Good call Allyance

  • surf ind Says:

Just heard they are signing BOBBY MARTINEZ and might sign Dane too. Allyance is blowing up!

  • baconhater Says:

remodeling 2 places abd adding 1 audio room , learn to retain what you read dude , there are courses availble on the web , they even have you tube to help you remember !

  • ocshopowner Says:

my point was ; they are claiming bad economy yet making talented people who had a lot to do with success so far suffer. then spending money to remodel thier offices , how is that giving more to the accounts and consumer? Don’t kid yourself on the audio room either , they will be selling direct and SOCal will be a fullfilment center for the West Coast. Good plan but now i am off point. You reap what you sow Allyance . You know what you planted.

  • Ocean Side Says:

I can only add that these guys came into our shop and were VERY aggressive about how the stuff would do in our doors. The stuff looked decent enough so we gave ‘em a chance. We sold one shirt in 3 months and are awaiting an RTV on the remainder of the SKUs. I always try and give the new guys a chance. This one just plain didn’t connect with our buyers. Not saying anything else as I don’t give a shit about rumors and whatever else.

My guys who work the floor thought the rep was pretty lame. It’s the reps/owners who pay attention to the floor guys who tend to do well rather than the guys who only come and kiss my ass.

  • dave Says:

Allyance? I don’t know. The brand was just O.K. at best. I wish these guys luck. In this economy they are going to need it.
The ads sucked, some of the worst I have ever seen. I don’t know who was doing those ads, but they were the worst in surfing history.

It is pretty obvious that the $$$money$$$ is gone. Hope they can get some more.
On A different note, does anyone know what is going on with INSIGHT? I have not seen any of their ads of late. Are they having problems too???

  • anonymous Says:

    Semper Fi O’side !

  • brucesnows Says:

Haters haters haters, who keeps the score of the props and cons with an industry article?
So Blackheart has alot of supporters who have the time to cut Rehberg and Bergman down.
i also have the time to prop them up!
I have been in the industry for 20+ years and don’t know too many talents like Dale who has succeeded in EVERYTHING he has put his heart into.
Everyone needs money people and good designers.
There are so many unknown design talents in the pool for them to tap, its crazy!
None of us know the next best designer, but I’m sure that those guys are looking at hundreds if not thousands of fresh designers works now that they are not locked in anymore.
They gave Blackheart their props and said nothing bad about what they had done for the brand and even left the door open to work with them again.
If Blackheart is a s good as all their fans here are saying, they will get other work and projects.

  • Newps Says:

    Wait- Is Jason Arnold gone??

  • Anonymous Says:

Nobody is signing Bobby unless they have a cool million because that is what he expects to be paid. He basically told reef to fuck off when they told him his deal was going to stay the same. You want to talk about arrogance! I do see a fit with the brand however.

  • Anonymous Says:

Allyance and the blackhart were doing some interesting stuff. It was a “required taste”. Spinning things a little differently then the bigger surf brands who all look the same. They deserve some credit to be out of the box. Unlike the big brands who basically preview their lines to Pacsun every season way earlier than everybody else so they can make the necessary changes so it would sell. I know because I was a rep. I’d sit in those meetings and the buyer and merchandiser would ask me to change “this” and “remove” that and you’ll get our order. Why do you think all the big brands look so watered down? Its gotten a little bit better but still pretty bad. Good luck to Allyance and Blackhart. The industry needs some freshness!

  • sean Says:

ALLYANCE will only be “better off” if they learn better customer service and get someone to do better ads.
Lets get real, things just don’t change overnight? Do you live in this economy? Stores are not purchasing (customers) are not buying unless they get 40% off.
And a retail store does not make a sustainable profit at 40%. That said, ALLYANCE will only survive if the hardcore surfshops start buying their product. Are the ads going to get better? I heard they cut loose some of their original reps, that is very good news. Bergman said he has hired a new sales force, that is a step in the right direction. As long as the reps stay with the company and don’t jump ship. Many of these reps go from brand to brand overnight and seem to have 0 loyalty. I said many, not all!

Their is much more to running a company then just saying “they are cool” or “make cool things”. The company has to be profitable. I do not run ALLYANCE but
from the start it seemed that they were very “TOP HEAVY”, Everyone seemed to be pulling a high salary with a low standard put on results. Everyone seemed to have some
title or be “important” or an expert in some way. But even with all that, ALLYANCE could not get the job done. So now what? A smaller “team”? A redesigned office?
Give me a break! It’s going to take more then that to make ALLYANCE work! And the money in New York is drying up fast. So what will the surf industry do? Who will fun it?

  • Nixon Says:

A little bird told me they just hired the best marketing guy and creative director in our industry and will announce who they are next week. Go for it ALLYANCE, you are what we need out there right now!

  • anonymous Says:

Chad @ NIXON is going to work for Allyance , wow , isn’t that step backwards though !?

  • anonymous Says:

Sean needs his own Blogspot ! This guy is paying attention !

  • dave Says:

I agree with all that you said. I had a very arrogant rep. He was somehow related to the company. He did not have a clue on how to take care of the buyers in our store, his customer. Very aggressive personality. I tolled him what was not selling (sku’s he promised to take back if they did not sell) and he made it seem like it was our fault.
I hope Allyance hires better reps. I could careless about the so called blackheart thing. Who cares. Not too impressed with them. As for the rep, we all learn from our mistakes. So maybe he will become a better rep with some other company. Oh, and those ads were really bad.

  • BLACK Says:

THE REMODEL BS: I work next door from ALLYANCE and from my point of view these guys needed to remodel to be more efficient with their business. Building walls for sectretaries, a showroom for accounts, more space for the expansion they have experienced, etc.

They have some big things happening soon that will make the big guys cringe even more. Good things are always a threat arent they?

You guys will think of anything to bring a cool brand down.

  • AMBIGUOUS Says:

Jason Bergman you are such a clown! You guys spent over 500K in 6 months with no ROI… You guys are done!

  • anonymous Says:

Nothing AMBIGUOUS about that comment ! Right on !

  • anonymous Says:

AHH , A comment from the cabinet shop next door no doubt !

  • Anonymous Says:

yes almost all of the old sales staff has been replaced, they replaced them with seasoned professionals in the industry, not people that make excuses and want to be paid big draws for nothing. how about everyone that is gone that claimed big titles and ownership.. those people where “has beens” trying to latch onto the next big thing.. ALLYANCE, problem is they were washed up “has beens” and didnt contribute anything and helped make the whole thing a bloated pig. cut the fat and move on… ALLYANCE will survive without the big egos and bloated pay checks.. plenty of talent to tap. they need to run it like a business and not a playschool for a bunch of industry dropouts.

  • sean Says:

I hope Dane does not make that mistake! Dane is way to valuable to Quik. Quik has already put so many marketing dollars into Dane. They will do anything to keep him on board. As for Bobby, he may be very good, but in my opinion not worth the money he is asking for. A million? Don’t think so. Not in this economy. And how are the guys at ALLYANCE going to afford that when they can’t even afford to pay their corporate officers whom work for them? These are just rumors. (I know Quik is having money trouble, but they will more than likely cut the B and C guys before cutting people like Dane)

Bobby is not as marketable as some seem to think. He is a great surfer, but sorry, He is not worth all that money. Any company in this current global climate who pays that much money out to someone like Bobby is downright crazy and should be fired from the company they work for. I would not pay Bobby over $250,000. I know that is low, but he is not marketable beyond that amount, what is the “RETURN” on Bobby? Do people really buy board-shorts because Bobby puts a pair on? Are grooms running out and getting the latest Bobby tattoo? Sorry, I just don’t see it. How many times in the Pro Surfing World do we see a great surfer that just is not marketable? Some just don’t connect. Brands can spend thousands on them, and the buyers just won’t budge. Does anyone remember Counter Culture? Bobby was representing them back in the 90’s, what happened? They went out of business. At the time, Bobby was getting lot’s of money from them, look what happened. Now I know it is not all Bobby’s fault that they (Counter Culture) went out of business, but paying team riders hundreds of thousands does contribute too the problem. Don’t get me wrong, some are worth the money, most are not.

  • BHB Says:

JA is all over this board like a cheap suit.

  • jay Says:

Big things to come? give us all a break. Who cares, some other idiot is going to throw more money into a sinking ship?
Come on, Don’t you get it? It’s money, money and more money. Any company can survive if investors keep throwing money at the problem. The real question is, will they get a return? I don’t think so. It’s going to be a very tough next 5 years in the surf industry. The times are a changing.

  • shop eat surf Says:

This article is interesting, Allyance has some things coming up I have heard a lot about over the weekend. It sounds like they are doing something right for the retailer and their business.

  • anonymous Says:

Why not do a follow up with the Blackhart boys on your site Tiff. Then we can all decide. Bottom line ; B.B. must have done something right , a lot of comments here from people with definate opinions . I would call that another win for B.B.? Would’nt you ?

  • shop eat shit Says:

Why not learn how to surf first ?

  • anonymous Says:

She reports on the Surf Industry , why would she need to learn to surf ?

  • Comune Says:

This company is a threat for a lot of the medium tier brands out there. I heard ALLYANCE just got a big marketing and creative guy too coming in next week for 2009. Good for them and their accounts I hope! Dont spend it all, but spend it good.

  • Slayer Says:

I dont think Allaynce will be taking the aproach of signing anyone they have to pay for at the moment… They are cutting back, so they can save the $$ and use it where its needed, the stores! Second, Reef offered Bobby a deal, he said no, week later went back to settle and they moved on! Bobby is a great surfer, but times are tough and you should take what you can get… Same with Allyance.. Just take what you get!

  • antirep Says:

Just got off the phone with several accounts here in Hawaii , asked them what they thought , thier answer was ” who ?!” Point is ; do not think they or the Blackheart Brotherhood will be making any body “cringe ” any time soon. Just like VeeCo, it takes T I M E and M O N E Y Bro !

  • Not gullible Says:

Dude…. are you serious? Did you just write 2 paragraphs on the most absurd rumor to surface a message board since the inception of the blog?! Classic…

  • Surfride Oceanside Says:

Allyance has a lot of potential. They have done some things they needed to grow and survive the approaching storm of black hell.

The reps and Bergman are great and professional too so I dont know what fake shops are writing on this comment page, but it is very obvious there is a lot of fictitouos comments on here.

  • authenticity? Says:

I have to agree with shop eat shit on this one. I can’t believe that site has any credibility.

But as far as Allyance goes … it’ll be an uphill battle for all brands right now. I hope for the few true core shops left that Allyance, or some other new brand can carry them through the tough times ahead.

  • Surfride Oceanside Says:

Agreed. Its all the core shops have right now all-Rvca is at tillys, atwater at nordstrom..Who else is there? Allyance is all there is. Period, they will do it for sure.

  • ARRRRRGGG Says:

FOR HOPEFULLY THE LAST TIME ! WHAT YOU KNOW AS ALLYANCE NOW IS BLACKHART BROTHERHOOD ! That is not to say the new will be worse or better , but the stuff out now IS the Blackhart Brotherhood.

Do you work with srfgirl21 JEEESHH ; Read and retain or refrain from commenting . Listen to SEAN , he is down .

  • repd4years Says:

Accounts in Hawaii!!?? Seriously … no territory is eating shit like HI!

  • Anonymous Says:

Go to rincon and tell Bobby that. See what happens.

  • classic Says:

Good call out …. Not gullible. Sean must be a little slow …. and bored!

  • DJ Says:

Changing that would be the best thing ALLANCE ever did. Who can even relate to those ads or that Rogue Status or Heroes thing. They are so new they can do anything they want.

  • S.C. Boy Says:

I have heard the ALLYANCE name about 10 times this weekend, they must be doing something very right. Didnt they sign Bobby Martinez for 2009? That is so sweet, he has such a sick back hand.

  • antirep Says:

Sorry to tell you bro but i just talked with several who are feeling pretty upbeat and having a good year end surge.

Maybe it is just products you sell or , gasp , could be your vibe ?

    repd4-2manyyears ? maybe ?

  • Nor Cal Says:

The rumors are spreading…I heard that Sh*t too! Sounds like those Allyance guys know what they are doing. I also did hear Danes name thrown around.. did anyone elese hear that? This company is so tight!

  • Closet Says:

I heard that too, didnt they get some big surf guys too? good brand with a bright future. They have Bergman and Dale too so that will make things happen on a larger scale.

  • Akram Says:

    Allyance steppin up!

  • SC Pier Says:

    Bobby?? SICK!

  • closet comune Says:

really , gee wiz , i heard that too , in fact , i heard that Dane is coming over from Quik with the entire Marketing Dept. That Bob McKnight is coming in to head up the socal warehouse and shipping dept. , that Tiger Woods is the new money man and Obama will use the business model to jump start the economy , thus Allyance will have saved the world !

  • Adam Says:

ALLYANCE is so gnar. I kept hearing their name over and over this past weekend at Bear, plus there was like 30 stickers on the lifts…Then I saw thier outerwear and I was blown away. Keep the threads poppin boys

  • bara kkk obammma Says:

go buy hand guns and learn how to shoot… ftw…….

  • bloodygash Says:

Good luck to both parties I got love for the Brotherhood and Allyance. The adds were creative and out of the box the commercial was the sickest thing I’ve ever seen the gear was and will still be insane. F*** the economy….

  • arrrggg Says:

just went to website , do they even make outerwear ?

  • LSS Says:

LSS has carried the brand for 3 years, before BHB and Machine so who cares. We cant wait to see the new line and ads!

  • Puerto Rico shop owner Says:

Yeah Allyance! Let us know when Bobby can do a signing please please let Bora Bora do it first.

  • Puerto Rico shop owner Says:

You obviously live in Ohio. Stay at NBC and watch Ice Skating

  • jason Says:

I agree with Sean, the guy seems too know what he is talking about. Out of all the post I have read so far, Sean seems too be on the money.
Almost all that he said I agree with, Bobby is a great surfer, but is very overrated. As far as calling Sean out, I don’t think so. The guy is right about Dane, We in the industry have been hearing these “rumors” for quite some time now. We all know he probably won’t leave Quiksilver, but Quik is having money problems so like any SPORT it would be fair to “speculate” that he may sign with someone else.
I also think that some of the Allyance people are putting up positive phony responses to make themselves look better. just a speculation.

That said, Sean, keep up the good work! My wife and I both surf and are in the industry and agree with your well thought out statements on this matter

  • OC REP Says:

I have seen those windows everywhere in Southern California. Bergman really hustled out there, then Voigt. Allyance is in more A doors than a lot of brands. I never heard a rumor, but the industry sure is glad it is working out over there..Making people nervous arent ya

  • Attic Says:

Damn that is so true! All the windows they got are crazy. We are getting one on the 15th.

  • Hanger Says:

yes we do at http://www.hanger94.com it is so good! Glad I can help arrrggg

  • ace1 Says:

Oh, um, I never considered Surfride a “real shop”. Sorry, but that store is as B.S. Corporate as they get.

  • Hanger Says:

Yup plastered here in SD too. Bergman, Damon and Dale hooked it up!

  • FUEL TV Says:

Very rad. Look for their commercial http://www.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrISdj2QfiA to run again in conjunction with ASR again.

  • ace1 Says:

Voigt? Poor guy left Mada! Voigt sure does get around. I wonder why he went too Allyance?
He is an O.K. rep and a good guy, Allyance should be happy to have him. Hope he makes lots of money. lol!

Hey, who is the new Mada rep?

  • Tak Says:

This article is about Allyance, not some random dudes that worked there that no one knows. Lets be real here.

Allyance, cant you see all these people are afraid of a new brand that has some potential? And…last I checked this was not a boardroom, if Allyance wants to remodel who gives a sh%t?

Allyance has more views on TWBIZ than a lot of features, something is very right here. Allyance if you can hear me “KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND DONT LET ANYONE BRING YOU DOWN, YOU CAN DO IT AND WE NEED YOU”

  • Attic Says:

I think Voigt has been with Osiris for 15 years, and Mada has not even shipped holiday for me yet…Pretty smart actually, those Allyance guys seem pumped on him.

  • Anonymous Says:

    You said it best Tak.

  • arrrggg Says:

Thank you Hanger; got to admit , that Echodyne Jacket is pretty rad !

  • Sk8 and destroy Says:

There is a lot to take isnt there young Jedi? Billabong laid off 100 team riders. Rusty-Gay and cant pay anyone…Nate Yoemans? Lost..Almost out of business too, Quick-we dont even need to go there. Lets not forget the whole skate industry too. Lots of opportunity??

  • Erik Says:

This sounds like a fat kook on coronado island, not Emerald City either.

  • Erik Says:

the dude in the beenie is Dale Rehberg (ex pro snowboarder with his own Ride model). Dont think he is stealing anything

  • Carlsbad Sun Diego Says:

Voigt is the man, we dropped Mada after he left. We need more Allyance in our store, cant even keep it in stock.

  • friend of allyance and bhb Says:

Dale And Bergman cool, BHB-Jason Arnold is cool, in fact love the guy. Did he quit to sing in a band with Divel? Whats the band name does anyone know? Gots to know

  • tikytaky Says:

Tak , if you do not know who BHB are then you are pretty uniformed dude.

The article brought up BHB and the comment of Bergman was “the economy is bad , had to make cuts ” but then goes on to mention remodeling as an important sign of the companies health. It is a waste of money when people are losing jobs , it is poor management and poor PR to bring it up in an interview.
TAK, “who gives a sh$% about remodeling” , no one. Who cares about throwing flash money away after letting people go , everyone should .

  • Cutthroat Says:

Saw an Allyance T shirt on a band on Carson Daly a few nights back. Keep it up guys!

  • uno Says:

    Jason is a rad dude

  • lurker Says:

yeah, so the big guys like quik and hurley can make better product for dept stores. our industry needs new brands numb nutz, that’s where all the creativity comes from and the the big guys rip it off and sell it out.

  • curbside dentist Says:

the blackheart guys are cool but i’m sure allyance will be just fine without them. can’t wait to see the new stuff. the brand is sick!!!

  • tikytaky Says:

normal for a cutthroat , probably. Normal for a company that just fired 3 great talents that got them where they are for economic reasons , not so normal , but definately cutthroat !

  • lip assassin Says:

  • Chester Says:

Yes Baconhater it appears those Allyance guys are onto something here!

  • anonymous Says:

And across from The Shoreline Church , i know exactly where they are hater , try pulling your head out of your ass and getting a sense of humor .

  • Revo Says:

  • MF Says:

LEHMAN is the name of the president of Alpha 6 Distributions [sic], the registered owner of the Allyance trademark in the US. Is he the man behind the curtain/ I wonder if he is a Lehman from Lehman Brothers, maybe that would explain…

  • anonymous Says:

checked them both , all i saw was a ad for Surfer Dude , did they sign Willie Nelson , that would be cool .

  • red4years Says:

I think they call that the triple crown antirep..didn’t you read the report Vans put out about the stimulus the winter season/ surfers cause in HI last year? • Peter piper Says:

Who?? All i know is Allyance is the biggest co in Huntington Beach and makes insane outerwear and clothes. I rode with a jacket at Mountain High over the weekend. Critical!

  • Bliss Says:

Guess we know who the negative nelly is on this blog dont we? This is about allyance, a great new brand that has a lot of love out there. Dont make it so obvious it makes you dudes look worried.

  • chongo Says:

    Yes, Blackhart is screwed.

  • BRA association Says:

To whom it may concern. Allyance is regarded as the best partner with every retailer I have talked to. There are people on this page that must have nothing better to do than go to blogs all day, but be assured this brand is the next big thing, and is getting placement everywhere.

  • Kai Says:

That is what I think too.

  • Fernando Says:

Heard these guys have some big creative and marketing guys coming in.

  • anonymous Says:

true that ! the Volcom / LSS store is pushing it big time . hey ,maybe Troy is the new money/ marketing guy .

  • peter piper Says:

That would be awesome, we all know if you dont got the bread you are nothing. I hope they have that

  • BC SURF Says:

All these guys are talented. But-Allyance has got the money to stay a while, sorry if you though something else.

  • anonymous Says:

BLISS , if it is about Allyance why was it brought up in the interview , no wonder your mag has no jounalistic integrity , you don’t pay attention. Good art in your mag though , maybe lose the articles though .

  • bragirls Says:

then why get rid of the talent ?

  • nigheist Says:

Blisss the mag has three S’s you douchebag.

Don’t drag those guys into your shit.

  • nigheist Says:

You can’t pin the MCD on the BB. That brand is Perry Ellis label, who’s strings get pulled from people in Florida. BB was smart enough to see the handwriting on the wall for that one and bailed out early!

  • anonymousss ? Says:

I think Perry bailed on them early more like. The circus tent was over budget (with no buyers inside) and the clothes looked like monarchy meets hitman fightgear. Give me a break, gee whiz. At least get the facts sraight nigheist.

  • Redsand Says:

Nate Yoemans on Allyance, that would be sick!

  • Anonymous Says:

Lots of talent out there Bragirl. Lots of talent at Allyance too from that interview.

  • SIMA Says:

Yes, it appears everything on this blog is false. ALLYANCE IS A GREAT BRAND WITH A BRIGHT FUTURE. If they were not there would not be this silly blog going on with all these posts. Something is very right in Denmark.

  • Joey Says:

Blisss supports both people here. Allyance is moving forward, great. BB moving forward to I hope, sure hope they didnt go over to La Jolla group they owe us lots of money between Rusty (worst brand of all time) and Lost.

If you dont like Blisss please do not read it, we still make money..ITS FREE

  • Pacsun Says:

Allyance wont sell to us but glad they are doing great

  • truedat Says:

wow , was that some actual honesty joey ! i will pay for BLISSS if it puts honest stances like that in it.

  • Brazil Says:

Go for it Allyance. You can do it

  • moreanonymousthenyou Says:

Come on, I can tell that this is allyance propaganda from the new rep.
M is a kook! mada anyone? It’s so obvious that M is trying to put a positive spin on this whole thing.
Every time someone tells the truth about how allyance really did business, M comes on as anonymous or some other name and
tries to spin it to make allyance look good. M likes men in tight boardshorts.
    And remember Newport rules!

  • whatevs Says:

    FACTS:
Allyance is financed by NYC big money.
They definitely had some momentum going with the BHB guys behind the wheel.
    The BHB guys got screwed.
The future is uncertain now for the brand.
The big money NYC financing is getting worried about his ROI.

    Good LUck.

  • mahalo Says:

Another fake comment from a blater (blog hater).

  • mahalo Says:

BELOW- They are financed from Swiss banks just like WESC, who is in NY no one knows.

  • Sammy bap Says:

Allyance is chill, im down with the black pants that Bergman gave me (they did rip but I skated in them everyday). Santa Barbara where you at?

  • Brible Says:

Ha ha - this is all pretty classic.

Whether Allyance “makes it” or not, that remains to be seen. The “NYC big money” backing is great but will only last so long… then it’s up to the brand and the shops to work it out on their own so that there’s a profitable environment for both parties in order for the situation to continue, move forward and… if possible, prosper!

All these comments really just seem to show that people are in almost desperate need of some fresh brands and fresh products out there! That’s cool!! I was beginning to lose a little faith in this industry for a while, seeing every brand get so big and sell out and watching these old complacent, conservative, cautious shop buyers doing the same dang thing, buying the same dang stuff, season after season…

It’s good to see something “different”. We don’t need to always have a “new” brand come out. I think the key is in the ways that brands can be “different”.

There are a lot of “different” brands out now that are healthy… not necessarily big, not necessarily new…. but different. That makes them fresh and keeps our specialty shops interesting, unique and on the edge.

I encourage everyone who has a shop to look at some new alternatives when it comes to brands…. My personal short list right now: Insight, Rythmn, Matix, Obey, Altamont, Jetpilot, Allyance… even AStars is different! Hate all you want, those brands have something new to offer and each brand there has a legit story and some really cool stuff you’ve never seen.

    My 2 cents

  • ahaaaa Says:

Well that would explain the pathetic marketing move of claiming the competition broke in over Christmas and stole Boardshort Technology . Sad !

  • screwed Says:

What’s the Deal with all the riders?

  • SHIT BRAND Says:

What ever happened to growing organically? Ads on Fuel TV before any real sales? WACK ALERT!
Next Volcom? Yeah right they are a bunch of mashed up overplayed genres with no real identity!

  • Hector from Sunset Beach Says:

  • 54ST GURU Says:

Anyone need freelance design? Boardshort specialist! It might freshen up the stagmentation of the surf brands that cater to a bunch of kooks at Pacsun even though it’s 28.5 % of their business. Back to the core.

  • SHIT BRAND Says:

….a million wouldn’t even touch the sides with that marketing campaign. i have never seen that crap on anyone… maybe people buy it and never wear it? fucking rad!

  • nigheist Says:

Right, right…and MCD is doing so much better now.

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Fact is PE couldn’t get behind the vibe, just like this NY backer for Allyance could get behind the vibe.

You can talk all the shit you want about BB and their creative vision, but it doesn’t change the fact that when it comes to putting out creative, pretty much every company in the surf industry doesn’t want to be first, but doesn’t want to be last.

…which is why you have a whole milieu of brands out there that stand for nothing (case in point - MCD, Gotcha, Redsand)

  • night-heighst in north county Says:

Woah , my bro @ Redsand ! You see MCD is a Division of Gotcha, it is the CORE Division , in fact it is the MORE CORE DIVISION M.C.D. Get it!

You see my Red sandy amigo , anyone or any thing can be CORE , they just have to claim it. Like the bro from SUN Diego Shops claiming they are Action Sports Surf core ! AND , they ARE , if you consider GOLF an action sport , those guys live it man !

  • Honest Indian Says:

No doubt- I am not a hater on this brand as I don’t really feel it is a brand but more like a couple punks playing surf company.

The first clue was when I spoke with Shane Beschen at ASR last year who quickly realized what goofs these guys were. Tavik may not be much better, but at least they are trying. Jason Arnold seemed like a decent enough dude but alas you clearly punted him too.

98% (or more) of all the posts on here are fakes and these guys know it.

The real story is Allyance is in jeopardy of a bankruptcy filing and that deal is close to being done unless they can get other financing which has little shot.

No one at Katin posted the stuff listed here either did anyone at WRV. If you did- step up and post your name and phone…Yeah, I thought not.

I do think it’s funny that these two chumps think they have really gotten over on the people reading these boards. You may have fooled a few morons but those of us that are the real deal know you are all full of shit.

Not only is your brand weak and getting weaker, now we all can confirm that you are liars to boot. You can’t take a short cut to build a brand.

You blew it. After the first few “comments” from “Shops” it started to look pretty stupid.

Worse yet as you have killed much of the credibility of this comments blog.

Hey Transworld- Tighten your shit up!!

  • Johnny BHB Says:

The BHB will give you the real story… as soon as our so called ex partner lets go of our nuts and gives us our last pay check!

Nothing… is what it seems! Beware of sponges with money! No friends! And zero creativity! Always remember to wear a metal suit of armor… around so called friends and business associates!

Going for a surf to clear my head!!!

This company has a lot of potentail to make an impact, 2009 could be a great year for you allyance. cheers

  • Anonymous Says:

Agreed- That Rusty stolen boardy stint was the worst thing I have ever read in my life.

  • Not gullible Says:

If there was the slightest inkling of the possibility that Allyance was in a position to even start talking about signing someone like Bobby or Dane, then this whole story wouldn’t exixt. I mean, how gullible are you dorks? The whole interview was about cutting costs (heads) in order to SURVIVE. Signing someone for almost 7 figures doesn’t really seem to logically factor into this equation. Bobby or Dane is more likely to ride for Big Dog than for Allyance.

  • why Says:

Did they just fire the whole team without telling them or what? Does anyone know?

  • Anonymous Says:

Thank you…. some one is smart enough to see through the same super tired formula, that is the exact reason the industry is as blown out as it is. What happened to brands that were in it for the love of the sports and not just because they think they know the formula that makes money. Kids will always see through the bull shit no matter how much money you throw at them.

  • core shop owner for 30 years Says:

The fact of the matter is, no brand is killing it right now. The economy sucks and too many doors have been opened in the industry.
The surf industry sold out. We need to get back to our roots. Macy’s is not a surf shop, yet why are all the brands that we built over the last 10-15 years selling to them? Money that’s why. Allyance isn’t there because they are a B brand. If Macy’s would open them Allyance would sell it. Why? Money. These brands don’t care about their core retailer anymore. Things haven’t been that way for a long time.
I believe that what goes around comes around, and from the sound of it Allyance screwed the people who created the “brand”. Best of luck to everyone involved! I feel your pain.
    Signed,
    Small surf shop owner

It seems to me that the Blackhart Boyz were just a bit egocentric! That’s the word on the street! Talented yes, but is that enough?

  • Zac Says:

Bergman……. the guy’s in la la land!

  • Ambig Says:

Hi CORE SURF OWNER, if you knew Jason Bergman you would know he could sell to any major retailer he wanted. Federated (Macys), tillys, Pac Sun..Whoever-He has been dealing with those people for 15 years. You obviously are not a real shop, nor know anything about Allyance. From what I know, Bergman has dealt with every level of distribution since I can remember and is the most professional sales person out there. Rvca just let go of their marketing director and half their staff, and they are still in business though arent they? THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

    Did Allyanc sign Bobby?

  • Zac Says:

Bergman’s a loser and full of shit!

  • Crocodile Dundee Says:

Mr Ambig or is it Mr Confused… same thing I guess,

To make a reply like that to a core surf shop of 30 years is pretty lame you should be more considerate.
Core stores built this industry and if you think just because allyance has the ability or previous connections to sell to major department stores and decides not to.. that this is worth mentioning…. you have no idea how it works…. these left over allyance guys couldn’t sell there arse at Hamburger Mary’s. If Miss Macy invited allyance to a wank off they would be there in a heart beat. “Core Shop Owner” is right they haven’t been invited. I maybe an aussie and out of touch with the whole allyance scene but years ago I was fortunate to work with the designers that were hired last year to bring some design cred to allyance … black bro heart or whatever they run with and they will be missed because any reasonable sales rep will tell you… “it starts with great product first and second a core door willing to take a punt” then some marketing wank after that, but with out a core door, your rooted mate … that my friend, Mr Ambig will never change. Good luck out there you have some distance to travel.
