Retailers in the ActionWatch same-store data set experienced surf/skate product revenues down 19.4% in February compared to the same month last year.
“These are the worst numbers since we started reporting same-store year-over-year data in January 2008,” stated Cary Allington, co-owner of AA Data Company. “Sales of men’s woven shirts were up almost 12% over last year and our ‘Other Footwear’ class—which is made up mostly of Ugg boots—was up quite a bit in February, but nearly every other significant product class was down double digits.”
“Retailers also took a pounding on margins in February, which is already a traditionally low margin month,” added Allington. “For example, sales of fleece tops earned retailers a 44% margin in February last year but only a 38% margin this year. Overall apparel margins went from 45% last year down to 42% in February 2009.”
