Vertical Urge has been holding it down in Raleigh, North Carolina for the past 19 years with an expert staff and solid partners like Vans, Volcom, Burton, DC, Nike SB, and Sole Tech. Maintaining a strong presence within Raleigh, Vertical Urge was also named Southeast TransWorld Business Regional Shop of the Year for the second straight year in our 2010 Industry & Retail Awards.
With a retail space of about 8,000 square feet and an online shop, owner Todd Canipe makes sure his shop carries what customers are looking for, or have a good reason if they don’t have it. Canipe stresses the need to work closely with brands as a commitment for mutual benefit. “If we don’t feel like we can represent the brand the way they deserve to be represented we simply won’t do it,” said Canipe.
When it comes to the role of core retailers, Canipe’s philosophy is that core retailers need to showcase the brands they carry and to cast the lifestyle of the skate and snow scene in a positive and exciting light. When something is dead, and when the mall stores have really sunk their teeth into something, Canipe realizes the importance of moving on.
Vertical Urge had a strong year in 2010, adding full-time staff members and having the crew from Vans install a custom buildout in the fall. The only low point of the year was additional competition creeping into the area, but Canipe is confident that his business will stay strong.
We couldn’t agree more after joining Canipe for a walk through of the shop and its park…
