OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - INNSBRUCK, AUT (November 13, 2008) – The Burton European Open (BEO) today announced that a number of the world’s top snowboarders plan to compete at this year’s 10th annual event, taking place from January 9-16 in Laax, Switzerland. The BEO is the third Burton Global Open Series event this season and a 6 Star TTR Event that offers top prizes like two new Volvo XC 60s and over $125,000 in prize money.

Among the confirmed invited riders are Burton Global Open Series Champion 07/08 Peetu Piiroinen from Finland, Olympic champion and defending 08 BEO slopestyle winner Shaun White (USA), Mikkel Bang (NOR), who placed second at least year’s Air & Style in Munich, and Swiss style master Nicolas Müller. The women’s line-up is also impressive with TTR World Champion 07/08 Jamie Anderson (USA), BEO 08 halfpipe winner and Olympic gold medallist Kelly Clark (USA), Dutch slopestyle queen Cheryl Maas, Canadian Marie-France Roy, Laax local Sina Candrian and the UK’s outstanding rider Jenny Jones, who came very close to winning the BGOS championship title last year.

For amateur riders who want a chance to compete against the top pros, online rider registration is open until November 20th at www.opensnowboarding.com.

The BEO’s 10th birthday will not only be celebrated with outstanding snowboarding, but also with legendary parties and live music acts. According to the band’s website, “Stereo Total has created a colorful and fascinating universe oscillating between the essential punkrock, disco and electro garage chanson and genius dilettantism.”

If you can’t make it to Switzerland, watch the BEO semi-finals and finals live on Go211.com, where webcasts and highlights of the competitions will also be available for on-demand viewing once the event is over.  For more information about this year’s BEO Birthday Bash, check out www.opensnowbarding.com.

Sierra Resort Takes Environmentality To New Industry Heights

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - November 10, 2008 - A slew of new environmental initiatives at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort build on the progress made by Project: Green Sierra, Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort’s innovative eco-conscious movement. The new efforts by Sierra™ Resort are designed to get as many individuals involved as possible, making tangible changes to the local environment, and building on Sierra Resort’s history of being responsible stewards of the land.

Building on the progress of last season’s initiatives, like the Green Lot, where hybrid vehicles can park up front in Preferred Parking for free, Sierra Resort is offering carpooling resources at SierraAtTahoe.com to help guests connect with one another to share rides to the mountain. The new online application allows guests to ask for or offer up a ride, save gas and money, and maybe even make some new friends. Guests can pre-select certain preferences like gender, rider type, smoker/non-smoker, age group and more. The online application links into a database shared by several Lake Tahoe resorts, providing guests access to a huge pool of other skiers and riders looking to hook-up a carpool.

Also new this season, environmentally conscious skiers and snowboarders can join Project: Green Sierra to become Part of the Solution. By signing the Project: Green Sierra pledge, season passholders promise to take tangible steps toward reducing their personal impact on the environment. If 1,000 passholders sign the Project: Green Sierra pledge, Sierra Resort will donate $1,000 to the Sacramento Tree Foundation in support of its goal to plant 5 million new trees in the region by 2025.

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort is working with three local groups of school children to collect plastic bottle tops in exchange for a free day of skiing and snowboarding. The collected plastic tops will be recycled into new bottle tops by Aveda™ through the first ever Caps Recycling Program, developed to help combat the devastating effects of plastic cap pollution-and to increase awareness around this critical issue. The program will create plastic bottle caps for their Limited Edition Vintage Clove Shampoo from 100% recycled caps. The South Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club, the third grade classes at Tahoe Valley Elementary and the Tahoe Environmental Magnet School are all partnering with Sierra Resort to collect caps throughout the winter. Once their individual collection goals have been met, the children will receive a free day of skiing and snowboarding from Sierra Resort.

Sierra Resort will begin purchasing only 100% eco-friendly disposable products for all restaurants this season, building on the effort started last season to eliminate as much waste as possible from the resort’s footprint. All plates, bowls, cups and flatware will be made from renewable sources such as sugar cane, potato starch and corn resin.

Also in keeping with a commitment to the local environment and the local community, Sierra Resort will host “Ski Green Day” on April 1, 2009 - a day full of eco-focused guest activities. Similar to Customer Appreciation Day at the end of the season which benefits local sports organizations, “Ski Green Day” will benefit local environmental organizations by donating one dollar from each lift ticket sold on this day.

Sierra Resort continues to encourage guests to take environmental responsibility into their own hands and offers suggestions for What You Can Do. A complete listing of all the environmental initiatives currently in place at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort can also be found online at www.SierraAtTahoe.com.

Snowmaking Under Way at Panorama Mountain Village

Panorama Mountain Village, B.C. — The weather conditions at Panorama are just right – cold and dry, which means that snowmaking for the 2008/09 winter season is underway ahead of schedule.

Panorama is able to make snow on 40% of its vast terrain and this morning the system is working at capacity on Showoff and Old Timer, pumping out the white-stuff, which in some places is already one-metre deep.

Snowmakers control the type of snow that blankets the ski trails, based on what the runs are being used for. According to Panorama’s snowmaking manager, Todd Partington, more water is used for building the snow base and on race-runs; less water is used for softer snow.

The depth of snow accumulated from snowmaking is also dependent on the trail. How much traffic the run gets, how steep it is and how much sun exposure it gets, all determine how much snow is needed. “The steeper the run, the more snow that is needed, as more gets pushed off to the sides,” explained Partington. “We work with the groomers to determine when a run has enough snow, and depth can be anywhere from 30 cm on a flat run to 90 cm on a high traffic, steeper trail,” he added.

The first day of snowmaking is an important milestone for ski-racers who will once again join the Canadian Alpine Ski Team at Panorama in November. National teams from Germany, Italy and Slovenia are just some utilizing the Alpine Canada Alpin Official Race Training Centre in preparation for the World Cup circuit and the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in British Columbia.

Panorama Mountain Village opens for skiing and boarding on December the 12th, a little over fifty days away. Until the end of this month, the resort is offering the Best Ski and Lodging deals of the season. Discounts of up to 35% would save two people staying in a Gold Studio $120 per night and that includes one day of skiing! There are no minimum or maximum stay requirements and the savings apply to all lodging booked through Panorama Mountain Village. Call 1.800.663.2929 before October the 30th.
