The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association has announced its elected officials for 2009. Among those announced, Vice President of Marketing for Vans Doug Palladini has been named President of SIMA. Palladini succeeds Dick Baker, who passed away on April 14 after a long battle with cancer.

“I am excited that the SIMA Board and membership have elected me as the next SIMA President, and sincerely humbled that Dick Baker was so supportive of my nomination to succeed him,” said Palladini, new SIMA President. “While I cannot possibly fill Dick’s shoes, I do intend to honor his legacy by working closely with all member companies to grow and promote the surf industry as effectively as possible.”

Here’s the press release:

SIMA ANNOUNCES NEWLY ELECTED 2009 SIMA OFFICERS, BOARD OF DIRECTORS,
AND APPOINTED ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS

- Doug Palladini Elected New SIMA President -

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. (April 30, 2009)  - The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) is proud to announce the newly elected and appointed Board Members for 2009.  After 10 years under the revolutionary presidential leadership and guidance of Dick Baker, the SIMA membership has elected Doug Palladini, Vice President of Marketing for Vans and previously a SIMA Board of Director, to succeed Baker as the new president of SIMA.

While Palladini is the newly elected SIMA President, the rest of the SIMA Officers will continue to serve out the remainder of their terms. Continuing their roles as officers are: Chad DiNenna, Co-founder and Director of Marketing for Nixon, as SIMA Vice President; Joel Cooper, CEO of Lost International, as SIMA Treasurer; and Greg Macias, Vice President of Marketing for Quiksilver, as SIMA Secretary.

There are two new faces in the SIMA boardroom. Shea Weber, President of Dewey Weber International Inc., was elected to the Board of Directors. Toby Bost, CEO of the La Jolla Group, has been appointed to the SIMA Advisory Board.

“I have been serving on the SIMA Board Builder Committee since 2006 and it has been a great experience working with other industry professionals to enhance and expand the opportunities for board builders,” said Weber.  “I am excited about the additional opportunity to help the industry as a SIMA Board of Director.  I look forward to working with existing officers and directors and am anxious to get started.”

SIMA’s Board of Directors and Nominating Committee nominate Director candidates and appoint Advisors based on their individual commitment to devote time to serving on committees, attending the monthly meetings, and overall contribution – as opposed to the company they work for.  Members of the Board of Directors and Advisory Boards must belong to a paid SIMA member company and be able to put aside the interests of their own company to do what is best for the surf industry and SIMA.  With that in mind, members of SIMA’s Board of Directors and Advisory Boards represent a well-balanced array of companies and product categories, from footwear manufacturers to board builders.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the amazing group of people on this board and within this organization,” said Bost.  “The influence SIMA has had on our industry over the years is unquestionable and it’s exciting to play an active role in continuing our collective success.”

In addition to the newly elected and appointed Board members, Dan McInerny, Vice President of Sales for Olukai, been elected to the Board of Directors.  McInerny previously served on the SIMA Advisory Board.

“It is quite an honor for me to serve on the SIMA Board of Directors,” said McInerny.  “Ever since my dad walked me down the beach at San Onofre in 1968 to buy my first board, I have had an affinity for surfing and the ocean lifestyle. We are a part of something special at SIMA. I look forward to serving the industry and preserving the lifestyle that has shaped my life and will undoubtedly shape those of future generations.”

SIMA elections are held each year, with half of the Board of Directors and Advisory Board positions open for election/appointment from year to year.  The terms of the newly elected and appointed positions run from April 2009 through April 2011. Following the 2009 election, the efforts of SIMA are guided by an 11-member Board of Directors. The Board of Directors has appointed seven non-voting Senior Advisory Board members and 16 non-voting Advisory Board members.

SIMA Surf Summit 12 Postponed

Due to the increased concern regarding the swine flu, SIMA has decided to POSTPONE the dates for Surf Summit 12.  As of yesterday afternoon, the Center for Disease Control has recommended that people avoid all non-essential travel to Mexico at this time. The health and safety of the SIMA Surf Summit attendees and staff are our first priority.

SIMA Surf Summit 12 is NOT cancelled, only postponed from the May 6-9 dates. SIMA is working now to determine new event dates for the near future when the situation is better contained and it is safe to travel. New event dates will most likely be announced later this week. For those attendees who have scheduled their own airfare to Cabo, it is our understanding that the airlines are working with travelers to reschedule or credit their tickets due to the swine flu.

We will keep you informed on the new Surf Summit 12 dates when they become available, and we look forward to uniting the tribe at Surf Summit 12 in the near future.

Kelly Slater Shapes Board For Martin Potter Using XTR Foam

Photo: Sherman

It’s been a much-discussed occurrence in the surf world—Kelly Slater is shaping some of his own boards. Noticeably shorter, Slater’s performance at the BIllabong Pipemasters last year had a similar reaction to Simon Anderson’s victory on a thruster in the early 80s: “What the f@ck is he riding?”

First dubbed the Wizard’s Sleeve, more recently referred to as a Green Goblin Sled; whatever you want to call it, Slates has made one for 1989 World Champ Martin Potter out of XTR and there’s plenty of buzz out there about it. Check out the press release below.

Press release:

(Oceanside, CA)9-time World Champ shaped Kelly Slater recently presented former World Champ (1989) Martin Potter with a gift: a board he shaped using XTR closed cell epoxy foam.

Media has given plenty of attention to Kelly’s shaping room dabbling, which broke into mainstream consciousness with his win at Pipe on a stubby 5′11. At the first WCT event on the Gold Coast of Australia, Kelly showed up with an even stubbier 5′4, along with the gift board for Potter. Potter’s board is inline with what Kelly’s been experimenting with: shorter, flatter, wider. It also features a five-fin set-up, allowing for Potter to play around with riding it as a thruster or quad. Making Potter’s board with an XTR blank is a good choice, as it will be much more likely to withstand Potter’s legendary lead foot power turns than traditional foam.

XTR Epoxy Surfboards are glassed at three strength-to-weight ratios 5.2, 5,0 and 5.C (competition). Kelly chose the competition level, and the weight (or lack thereof), is evident in the photo with Potter balancing the board with one hand, while he shakes Kelly’s with the other. The board was glassed with XTR’s new specialized ultra-white and UV-resistant resin, XTR-18.

Always a surfer first, Kelly couldn’t bring himself to just hand over the board: he rode it before presenting it to Martin Potter.

About XTR

XTR blanks are made from eXTRuded polystyrene foam, which are closed-cell. Unlike other foams, XTR blanks will take on no water?none. This allows XTR to apply thermovents, small vents on specific areas of the board that allow gas to escape, preventing delaminating. The extruded foam provides a flex pattern with a very quick return, creating a poppy feel which puts a spring in the surfer’s step. Look closely, and you?ll notice the XTR logo on many of the pro’s boards, including Chris Ward, Andy and Bruce Irons, Taylor Knox, Jordy Smith, Sofia Mulanovich, Bethany Hamilton, and many others, even Mr. Sl9er himself. Visit www.EpoxySurfboards.com <http://www.epoxysurfboards.com/>  for more information on the technology and video clips of top pros who choose to ride XTR shapes.
