Speculation that Billabong International would be continuing its expansion in the retail sector started back on March 13, when the company said it had identified “significant opportunities” for further retail expansion at an investor update on Australia’s Gold Coast. Then in mid May it announced it had acquired Kirra Surf, a retail store on the Gold Coast. Now Billabong is making a move on the East Coast of the United States by acquiring Quite Flight’s 14 store chain. On Friday, June 6, the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) hosted its annual Underwriting Party at Laguna Beach, California’s Mozambique Restaurant and Lounge. Attendees enjoyed a live performance by Donavon Frankenreiter and his band while signing up to support this year’s Waterman’s Ball Weekend. There was also a live auction, and short presentation from Billabong USA CEO Paul Naude. Volcom, Inc. (NASDAQ: VLCM) today announced that Richard R. Woolcott (below) has been elected chairman of the board of directors, and Jason W. Steris, in addition to his role as chief operating officer, has been named president. Richard Woolcott, who remains chief executive officer, succeeds Rene R. Woolcott as chairman of the board. Rene Woolcott, 76, will continue to serve as an active member of the board of directors. 
Additionally, Douglas S. Ingram, who has served on Volcom’s board of directors since June 2005, has been appointed lead independent director.

Eight-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) has won his third event on the 2008 ASP World Tour after eliminating C.J. Hobgood in the final of the Globe Pro Fiji held in six foot (two metre) waves at Cloudbreak. Slater remains the only member of the ASP Top 45 to win an event this year – the last ASP World Tour event held in Tahiti was won by a wildcard.
