SIMA Waterman’s Ball Underwriting Party, More Than $50K Raised

On Friday, June 6, the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) hosted its annual Underwriting Party at Laguna Beach, California’s Mozambique Restaurant and Lounge. Attendees enjoyed a live performance by Donavon Frankenreiter and his band while signing up to support this year’s Waterman’s Ball Weekend. There was also a live auction, and short presentation from Billabong USA CEO Paul Naude. Billabong Design For Humanity Hollywood

For the second year, Billabong’s Design For Humanity was held at the Avalon in Hollywood. The event features collaborative swim wear designs from Billabong’s talented team of designers and some of the fashion industry’s biggest names, as well as a concert, fashion show, and silent auction. Kelly Slater Scores His Third ASP Victory This Season At The Globe Pro Fiji

Eight-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) has won his third event on the 2008 ASP World Tour after eliminating C.J. Hobgood in the final of the Globe Pro Fiji held in six foot (two metre) waves at Cloudbreak. Who Is Selling Direct Online, And How?

Manufacturers selling product direct online to consumers is a touchy subject. If you don’t agree, check out the 40-something comments that were posted in regards to the article I did on Quiksilver launching its E-Commerce site in just over a week. The comments—for the most part—are not simply short-sighted shit talking. There are valid arguments both for and against manufacturers (in this case Quiksilver) selling products direct to their customer. In fact, the feedback led me to post a list—and by no means do I believe it to be complete—of actionsports companies selling direct online. So here it is. As always, feedback is welcome.

SIMA’s Dick Baker Awarded Orange County Father Of The Year

For the sixth year, the Father’s Day Council in Orange County hosted the Father of the Year Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, California. The dinner benefits the American Diabetes Association. Each year, honorees raise approximately $200,000 to help support advocacy, research, and education initiatives of the A.D.A. This year SIMA President Emeritus Dick Baker was among the honorees. Transworld’s Liam Ferguson was on hand, along with other top industry executives, to help honor Baker’s achievement.
