MARKET WATCH:News From Australia - Globe’s Half Year Result

Globe came out with its earnings release for the six months ended December 31st, 2008 on February 26th and nobody over here seemed to notice. Happily, I stumbled on it and thought my three faithful readers would want to know what’s up.

MARKET WATCH: Quik’s Quarterly Report and Conference Call

Quiksilver (along with the rest of us I guess) got caught in a series of economic and financial circumstances that it couldn’t have imagined. With that in mind, and before I get to day’s topic, I want to suggest that you all scurry to the library or the book store and get a copy of “The Black Swan- The Impact of the Highly Improbable.” It’s by Nassim Nicholas Taleb and is very relevant to the situation we find ourselves in.

MARKET WATCH: Quiksilver 8K On Debt Extension

Yesterday, Quik filed an 8K. The complete filing is quoted here. It’s pretty short, but says a lot. Read it, then I’ll have a few comments.

MARKET WATCH: Doing Good Business In a Bad Environment

Columbia Sportswear’s annual report is bracketed by the impact of the recession as, I expect, will be many companies’. On the first page they note, “Results of operations in any period should not be considered indicative of the results to be expected for any future period, particularly in light of the current macro-economic environment…”

MARKET WATCH: Orange 21 Files Rights Offering

Orange 21 is giving each of its existing shareholders the right to buy one share of its common stock for $0.80 cents for each share they currently own or warrant they have. Before the offering, they had 8,199,314 shares outstanding. Assuming that everybody buys the shares, they would have 17,744,128 shares outstanding afterwards and would raise $7,635,851.20

MARKET WATCH: Managing In A Recession

I can’t stand it anymore, so be warned. The next person who says to me, “We’re watching our inventory carefully” or “We’re working hard to keep our existing customers” or “We’re being really selective about our advertising and promotional expenses,” or “We’re cutting brands that haven’t sold well,” is going to get dumped on. They won’t really deserve it- they’ll just be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

MARKET WATCH: VF Industries Conference Presentation

VF’s January 14th press release already had my attention before the web cast of their investors presentation was released. I strongly recommend you take the time to watch the whole web cast and look at the slides. You’ll see how a well managed company is going to survive and even set themselves up to prosper during our little ongoing economic inconvenience.

MARKET WATCH: Some Industry Strategic Considerations

Reading and analyzing Quik’s 10K helped clarify some issues for me about industry strategy and the economy. I want to use some of their positioning statements to talk about how we compete in the much larger market we are, or want to be, a part of. When I say “much larger market” I mean the fashion driven market and the customers and potential customers who don’t skate, surf, or snowboard.

MARKET WATCH: Quik’s Annual and Quarterly Report

They filed this thing on December 30th. I, having no life, read all 89 pages New Year’s morning. I strongly recommend Proseco (Italian sparkling wine) over champagne. It seems to do fewer bad things to you.

MARKET WATCH: Urban Outfitters Quarter Ended Oct. 31

These days, you don’t come across many quarterly reports that make it look like consumers are still spending. Urban Outfitter’s comparables store sales were up 9.9% for the quarter, though they go on to note that they were flat for November. They say it’s possible “…comparable store net sales may further decelerate during the remainder of the holiday season.”
