As I established my sea-legs on board an exploration boat leaving the dock of the Ocean Institute in Dana Point Harbor, I had no idea what to expect from the rocky ocean voyage. As the wind howled and the waves crashed at the bow of the boat, my attention was suddenly diverted from the tumultuous setting to focus on the horizon ahead – a scene both calming and inspiring – as we caught the first glimpse of the Hobie fleet sailing towards us.
Dave Rastovich and crew started off the coast in Galleota at the end of September, and have journeyed down the California coastline to follow the migration of grey whales, stopping at various ports along the way to screen Justin Krumb’s film “Minds In The Water” as well as to host a live auction benefiting Surfers For Cetaceans and other ocean minded charities. The Band of Frequencies, who has been voyaging down the coastline as part of the fleet, has also been performing at each venue, sharing songs that have been inspired by and created along the journey.
The journey’s mission is to promote awareness of marine life & the need for their protection to people not only along the California coast, but all over the world.
As our boat pulled up next to the fleet and we sailed alongside them into the Dana Point Harbor I was struck by the power and cohesive nature of this voyage. It was a testament to the human spirit, and an example of what a group of passionate people can accomplish when fueled by their beliefs in a cause.
When we landed back on shore, Billabong and The Ocean Institute hosted a TransparentSea party open to the public, where we screened the Film “Minds In The Water” by Justin Krumb as well as enjoyed a silent auction with pieces by several featured artists including Andy Davis.
During the film we were able to grab a quick fireside chat with Rasta himself and hear what this voyage has been like for him, check it out below:
After the screening of the film there was a Q&A session open to the audience. Howie Cooke fielded a question about media, and in his answer gave a call to action for surf media around the world, check it out below:
The TransparentSea Voyage will be sailing though the Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego this Sunday, October 23. For more information on attending the event please visit http://transparentseavoyage.com/events
