Future Snowboarding Magazine Calls It Quits

Future Snowboarding MagazineTransworld Business received word today, June 12th, from several ex-employees of Future Snowboarding Magazine (FSM), that the company has closed its doors and will discontinue its print and online operations effective immediately.

According to our sources, who wish to remain anonymous based on the timeliness and delicate nature of the matter, the company informed its entire staff at its Solana Beach office today that their employment was terminated and the magazine was closing. The reasons for the decision by FSM’s parent company, San Francisco based Future US,were cited as financial.

No further details are available at this time. Transworld Business will update this story as more information becomes available. We wish the best to all former Future staff.

    It is never a good sign for any of us to see a seemingly strong snowboard based brand fold. Future had some very talented writers and editors. Sure that the industry will quickly find places for them.

    this truly is a huge bummer. those guys were doing a GREAT job and giving the other books a serious run for their money.

    this is unsurprisingly reminiscent of what happened with Freeze Magazine–the corporate penny pinchers care more about the quarterly bottom line than the brands, the message or the lifestyle.

    we shouldn’t exactly be shocked but we can hope that the other three learn from Future’s playbook–less attitude, open, easy humor and an everyman/woman voice.

    It is a rough eceonomy out there. Truth be told in large pub groups, if your not making dollars after this long, it becomes the only option for the parent compnay to exercise. There crew was very skilled, maybe just couldnt create a potent enough identity among the other brands Snowboarder, TWS, and Snowboard all having a more defined identity.

    Very sad to hear this news. But why didn’t they just keep the website running? I understand it’s hard for print mags to be profitable these days, but their online presence was unmatched (sorry, T-dub). I wish all the staff at Future the best of luck!

    There’s quite a few crack smokers out there saying that Future was one of the best magazines on the shelfs. It’s no surprise to me that it got shut down. Come on time to call a spade a spade. It was the worst of the heap.
    Their business magazine on the other hand was something to rave about but the regular one???

    Funny watching all of you make your comments about how much we sucked and how much you hated us The thing is, we are tried our best to make something that we loved to do… Snowboard. Comparing us to other snowboard magazines that have been around for over 20 years is crazy, it’s like comparing apples and oranges. What we did in our short three years was a great accomplishment. We made all of the other complacent snowboard magazines wake up and take notice. We are people to, we lost our jobs, we have families to support, and a project that we worked hard on is gone. Some of you must have never read it if you’re claiming not worth reading, you’re nuts. Colin Whyte is THE BEST writer in snowboarding.

    Future was making huge strides, and actually focused on normal things snowboarders could do instead of un-attainable pro-type things. I thought they were a great mag. They were quickly approaching #2 status and it’s a bummer to see them leave. Snowboarding publishing a a whole is incredibly stale and biased to who ever is is spending the most money this month and I hope that these other left-over mags do something to step it up.

    it was difficult to find on many mainstream newsstands - TWS, snowboarder and often snowboard mag were there - but no FSM…people have to see it to buy it - eps for kids w/ disposable income @ the market, etc…

    The fact is, Future was a tremendous effort by a very talented edit staff, who were lookig for ways to push snowboard media in new directions. to a large extent, they accomplished this — personal perspective, alliances, and loyalties will largely dictate whether you agree. But to deny their influence on other publications to increase the quality and rethink their own editorial strategies is to deny your own media savvy and handle on the market. maybe all the content, as a member of the industry, wasn’t for you personally. you’d rather read about things relevant to your own life, i imagine. but i think on a grander level it touched a large demo of readers looking for something relatable to their own — and very different than yours — snowboard experience. my condolences to the future staff, you earned my respect (which i was at first reluctant to give), and hats off to a job well done, regardless of this unfortunate outcome.

David Carson raised the bar on graphic design, most everyone else has just copied him in some form or fashion… Draplin is a great designer, don’t get me wrong but far from the claim your laying down.

    You’re simply an idiot and unfamilar with Future to liken the magazine to Maxim, label it “mediocre at best,” or claim it to be geared for short attention spans. Was Colin Whyte’s exhaustive profile on nicolas mueller for the short spanned reader? Was their non-biased board test Maxim-esque? If you’re going to be critical, back up your criticism. Future was the first snowboard mag to come along in years that i’ve been able to or actually wanted to read. it was smart, useful and entertaining, and actually geared at a older, more educated reader (which is the irony here). FSM, hats off.

    I made the maxim comment, but I never said I hated anyone. I just wasn’t into the mag or it’s contents. Sometime they might have had a good article, but most of the time I just didn’t think it had anything worth reading.

    As a fellow journalist - but on the other side of the atlantic - Future was a huge inspiration; at it’s heart was a pure passion for snowboarding. A love for travel, the mountains and the beauty of simply riding snow, was all encapsulated in it’s pages. From stunning photography to epic travel tales, it was this constantly raised standard that drove myself, and several other collegues, to hope that one day we too, would be able to contribute to the title, while, pushing us to maintain such quality in our own work. When I heard the news FSM was no more I was gutted.

    The riders themselves also loved the magazine: one certain, very high profile name was beyond stoked on a profile piece Colin Whyte wrote on him - despite having been interviewed a hundred times before, this one feature pleased him more than anything. Carefully researched, filled with colour and humanity, it was so refreshing to read a magazine that truly reflected the real experiences of snowboarding - those moments from which we form our own memories and love for the sport. Early days bruised but blissful; first seasons being skint and driving for hours to get that daily snow fix; to the more privileged, but still awe inspiring world of the pro rider/ photog / writer.

    It’s a reflection of the publishing world full stop; the drive to digital tightening advertising budgets, decreasing magazine sales and mounting pressure on editors to constantly create and be dynamic. However, having travelled and ridden lots in the US and Europe, I can’t help thinking that if Future was a Euro magazine it would still be growing today, nurtured by it’s publisher and allowed to bloom into the success it had the potential to be. Look at Pleasure: would that sell in the US? Probably not, yet, it’s huge in Europe. Now we’ll never know…

    well first we had The Snowboarder’s Journal. then came Frequency. or the other way around maybe, but both of them out before Future. now TSJ and Frequency have joined forces… Jason Ford’s been riding on the industry’s fumes for far too long [and his interviews in "Let It Ride" were the absolute lamest] yeah I’ll say it to his face too, and have but he could care less. another vampire that sucked off the vein for 3 years.

    and the “trade news” magazine was a “pay to play” deal, so all those product reviews weren’t really editorial.

    snowboarding’s the new rollerblading and as the Joker would say “snowboarding needs an enema” Time for the industry to stop patting itself on the back it’s still only 30% of lift ticket revenues and hardgoods sales are shrinking every year, offset by softgoods sales to folks that will never even actually ride a snowboard. selling culture with the participation. pretty much what’s happened to all boardsports in the past 20 years.

    Get it straight man. “frequency: The Snowboarder’s Journal” came several years before “The Snowboarder’s Journal”. Then future publications bought out “The Snowboarder’s Journal” and promptly shut it down… it never had anything to do with “frequency”, nor does Jason Ford. Get your facts straight before you go talking shit all over the place.

    Condolences to the future crew, they are talented individuals and will be sure to find work elsewhere. It’s unfortunate that in a trough in the market, something’s gotta give. We can only hope the industry rebounds as it has before and print media will see better days so all of these individuals can find a spot to make magazines.

    But it is harder and harder to get a real mag goin’ on these days. Getting out there with a new name, surrounded by 15+ y.o. companies is kind of a challenge, and you’d better be veeery good to go over 5 years…

    Good luck for Future’s staff, your mag was available in France and I did enjoy reading it.
    On our side I just hope that our online snowboarding stuff will make it after its first year…

    I am sad for this sport that we all love reading this blog today. It doesn’t matter if you loved Future or didn’t, they were doing all shredders a service by giving us a vehicle to explore and day dream about being on the mountain when we’re not.
    I’m a publisher, I know how f’ing hard it is too be fresh, and those guys did it for YOU. Not just for them.
    When your subscription was $9 / year, and the postage cost is $1.80 to mail those out, you do the math.
    They helped set the bar in this grueling industry, so instead of blaming gas prices or corporations, take a look in the mirror, what did you do to help support them?

    All shredders should just be thankful that there are people out there that bust ass to give you some shred porn, put up their own dollars and work 18 hours a day to make it happen.

    Fact is launching a mag is hard. doing it with 5 million dollars doesnt mean you will make it.

    you must have been recieving a different magazine. the one i got had one page interviews, product “reviews” which were just glorified ad shots (20 gloves on one page), shitty paper with bad coloring, and more deodorant adds than you could shake a stick at. FREQUENCY and SNOWBOARD JOURNAL (RIP) were great, SNOWBOARDMAG is nicely done and put together but still pusheds way too much product, TWS and snowboarder are fucking garbage.

    Nice work on the thinly veiled, backhanded “compliments” to the Future crew.

    What you selectively fail to mention is that YOUR book was on its deathbed not all that long ago, until it was rescued by a ski mag publisher with deep pockets. Don’t act too high and mighty–just because you guys don’t have so-called “corporate” backing, doesn’t mean you aren’t on just as slippery a slope.

    SMP (Storm Mountain Publishing–who started Freeskier and now owns Snowboard) is pounding the pavement like mad for ad dollars this season. As you said, mags are expensive and its just gonna get worse. The little guys are going to have to prove their worth this time around. Gone are the days of latching on like “parasites” and talking the South Lake wannabe gangster line. You guys don’t have the padding of Bonnier or Source Interlink to get you through the rough times.

    However, as I’m sure you’ve already concluded, the death of your “comrades’” pub might be a nice little turn of events for you all.

    Well, really, here’s the question:

    Will the advertisers’ Future money go to you, or will they just pour any excess back into TW and “er”? Or, will they keep it in their pockets and pad their marketing budgets in favor of spending their precious pennies on a pub with less than 20k subscribers?

    You need “passion, money, and unflawed execution, and partnerships, and deep relationships to make shit happen on this level”. Exactly right homie. So you better stop spewing and start working on those so-called relationships. You’re going to need them to get through this rough patch that our whole industry is in right now.

    Big ups to Baker. He shuts up and makes it happen, you and your sales cohorts could learn a thing or two from him.

    Everyone has opinions on the subject of FSM…whether you supported the mag or not, your opinion. Some people really liked the mag, myself included and thought the articles brought by the staff actually added to the snowboard industry. Not all of us are industry people, just the regular snowboarder who wants more input to choose from. Sorry to hear that FSM is gone, I just hope the staff finds homes at other mags that appreciate them.

    Man this thread really feels like it’s full of snowboard-mag people that hated everything about Future and some crazy guy at snow-rev. It’ll be interesting if they actually launch a magazine, hope they do more research before the actually put out articles, or maybe use some spell check, you’d think Centi’s girlfriend could at least pay for that too

    I love what feels to be the hate from Snowboard-mag about how “lame” future was and not “core”. Wasn’t it just a year ago “For the same reason I started this magazine, is the same reason I’m leaving” Sullivan left his baby? That really tells ya something about the way things went a changing when Storm got in there. And copying articles? I’d like to see some proof of this. I’m guessing this mostly from Nunez as there were repeatedly blogs on their site bashing Future. I wish everyone at that mag was more like baker, chill, calm and respectful.

    I hate that I’ve had to rant and bitch and bash, but I think if someones bashing for no apparent reason then they should be called out as well.

    Funny, i actually thought Future was doing better the past year, no hate to Future or its staff, SO hate all you want , I dont really care. And let me tell you that all ad reps are pounding the pavement hard for ad dollars, and they wont stop till they get the po po off the block…

    they didnt raise the bar it was a sloppy shit paper mess that tried to copy MAXIM of all things how does snowboarding and this culture relate to MAXIM mainstream bullshit it doesnt they didnt raise anything it was a corporate publisher coming in trying to make dollars off of this industry and thought they were genius publishers

    whether or not they had a good crew is besides the point

    the best mag out there is SNOWBOARD MAG you need to be true and passionate and authentic to make something with quality and future had none of that it was an investment for a corporate parent company and that’s it, props to Mark Sullivan and a true snowboard mag

    the part that didnt work was the FUTURE part if they had love for the sport and were truly passionate they would have never given up, point blank they just didnt get it they came from the outside tried to buy in without understanding this culture you can’t apply the same principles from SCRAPBOOK MAGAZINE to this culture and thats why they failed

    If they had the true passion and love as Mark Sullivan did they could have made it

    I think you hit it on the mark. Distribution seemed to be the downfall. It’s easy to rip on any magazine, I could go on for hours about how $hitty Transworld and Snowboarding is (although the poster above was right, no such thing as a non-biased snowboard test). Future was a good mag, but it was harder to find than the other magazines. Distribution was weak, you had to really try to find it in some places.

    They closed down still owing me a $100 too, bummer.

    What, the 4 issues, (newsstand @ 4.99/each) that you’ve already received from your $7.00 subscription weren’t worth the price you paid? Doing the math, which I’m sure you’re great at, that’s more than half of the subscription (there were only 7 per year). You probably read more in those 4 months than you ever did in high school YO! word, so I’m sure Future Publishing Company will mail you a check for $3.00 with a huge smiley-face sticker affixed to the back of the envelope. You must be some fuckin’ punk Minnesotan Joey or even a Texan Gaper. In which case, YOU are the one that is making the snowboard industry look weak. You’re the reason that Colorado resorts succeed, so thank you though… I just wish marketing departments didn’t have to bring themselves so low as to market Spring Break packages in places where the people don’t even know how to shovel snow, let alone shred it when they come slide-slip down chutes, pow fields, and cliff landlings during an epic pow year. So if you think that an idea that was new and progressive should have never started…??? then maybe Steve Jobs should’ve never continued fighting Bill Gates and producing the Apple computer that you used to post your dumbass comment, and the same iMac that I’m using to put you in your place right NOW. If you’re really concerned about it, I’ll send your subscription money, as long as you turn around and subscribe to a shred mag that IS NOT: Transworld, Snowboarder or Snowboard Mag…. and don’t say that there aren’t any (Allus CO Snowboard magazine is THE ONLY magazine dedicated to everything Colorado shredding and it’s lifestyle–something that Future did quite well at also- shared the lifestyle as it really is … i.e. Issue 3.3- “Move to the Mountains” or when they tried to publish “THE DRIFT magazine” which was an ALL FEMALE shred mag- they included it with one of the FSM issues for free! Imagine that- cute girls that love to shred… something that you’ll never get… GAPER

    Check out AllUs Mag.
    That mag is pretty dope, just keeps getting better and better. I picked it up at Wahoos, they have newstands there. Plus, they have parties with some Ill cats, like Common, Heiroglyphics, Dilated Peoples.
    They giveaway a ton of stuff to their readers.

    Super clean, really respectable magazine.

    Wanted to renew my subscription this year and found out that the company no longer exists. This is the worst news I have heard in awhile. This mag actually had some good content in it along with lots of awesome eye-candy.
    Sorry to hear about it and I hope something equally enjoyable hits the stands soon.
