A program launched by Maloof Skateboarding, “Skate & Donate,” is a partnership with Southern California retailers for a shoe drive to benefit kids in South Africa. Maloof will collect shoe and skateboard donations from 59 shops, including Active Ride Shop, Jack’s Surfboards, Val Surf and Identity Board Shop, and Vans has already agreed to donate 1,000 pairs of new shoes to kick off the effort. All items given to the drive will be distributed to youth across South Africa starting in April.
“When I visited South Africa last year, I learned about an amazing 6-year-old named Msho who was skateboarding barefoot,” said Joe Maloof, creator of Maloof Money Cup and owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. “It really touched all of us. We started a global initiative in December to promote skateboarding across the world as a positive, healthy activity and to make a difference in the communities where we host our contests. This is just the first small step, but one that can make a huge difference in the lives of these kids. We’d like to thank our partner, Vans, for donating 1,000 pairs of new shoes to support this program and we invite everyone to help change lives by donating their gently used shoes at one of our partner retailers.”
