In an effort to provide our readers with the most comprehensive coverage of the current retail climate as possible, Transworld Business has developed a new monthly column we’re calling Retail Round Up. In this installment we examine how specialty stores and department stores are performing based on same-store sales results over that past thirteen months.
Here’s a look at same-store sales results from January 2008 versus January 2009 for more than a dozen retailers that cater to the teen/ young-adult market—both specialty and department stores.
What’s interesting in this chart is that only The Buckle and Hot Topic started 2009 with a positive comp. While the numbers may look scary, several of the retailers listed above actually projected for a weaker month. So even though same-store sales are down, they are not down as much as several retailers and market analysts expected them to be.
The line charts below show how specialty stores have performed compared to department stores from January 2008 through January 2009.

Interesting to see that Hot Topic is up. I blame the movie/book Twilight. I wonder if they extended their retail hours for vampires.

Very fickle indeed. Niche maybe, however the seasonal peaks and ebbs in all markets expected, were by no means consistant with the norm. We’ll have to wait and see.
