In its most recent newsletter, SIA released a summary of the NCDC’s ENSO weather predictions. If these hold true, looks like we’re in for a solid late season again this year!

The weather conditions across the country January to March 2008 mirror the conditions we will see January to March 2009.

Summary of January 5th ENSO Report:

  • Atmospheric and oceanic conditions reflect La Niña.
  • Recently, negative equatorial SST anomalies have strengthened across portions of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.
  • Based on recent trends in the observations and model forecasts, La Niña Conditions are likely through early 2009.

Conditions shifted from those shown in the top map, to those illustrated in the bottom right map when neutral conditions in the equatorial Pacific Ocean current shifted from “Neutral” to La Nina.
