According to Stab Magazine’s recently published “North Shore Rumors” column, there have been several big athlete contracts in the works this winter on the seven-mile miracle. At this point, these rumors are just that ….rumors, but stay tuned to Transworld Business for updates.
From Stab:
You like team rider rumours? Here are some of the best kicking round…
- Andy Irons will take next year off to chill and do some surf trips. He will aim for a wildcard in 2010. Billabong is backing him all the way, and has just given him a new five-year deal. (Parko’s just signed up for another five, too.)
- Wonder why Bobby Martinez has been shredding Pipe with no stickers on the nose of his board? He’s no longer riding for Reef. Despite the tough economic times (and his management persuading him to put ink on paper), Bobby walked away from an offer that was three-quarters of what he’d asked for. When he simmered down, Bobby went back to Reef, saying okay, I’ll take the deal, but Reef had withdrawn. It’s gonna be tough trying to find a company with $500k kicking round in its marketing budget right now. But Bob has signed some of the smarter deals in surfing. Remember seeing huge Monster energy drink green and black “M” on the bottom and deck of his board? Rumours suggest this nets him around $US300k.
- As always, Dane’s endorsements are the subject of constant speculation. The latest has it that the golden child is going to break his deal with Quik to join Analog. With Burton’s backing, Analog’s certainly got the cash. But Dane has not suggested he’s even thinking about moving, so the rumour remains unfounded.

Where do people get their information and why do they speculate? Until there’s press releases on their sponsorships, it’s all bullshit. What happened in the past 10 years? When did all this corporate crap come into play… Coco Ho making the Woman’s ASP tour at the age of 17 should be more of a headline than this crap.
Have you lost your damn minds?

dane is gonna ride for patagonia
December 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
That Joe THE Plumber is not the Joe Plumber on the Quik forum !
This Joe think’s that gossip and innuendo is a genius way to Market in these days of no marketing budgets !
Agree with THE Plumber on Coco Ho though , she and Carrisa Moore and the young Hawaiian ladies are taking it to the world , staying off ICE and reaching new highs too !

Dane is going to ride for Colt 45 with Bob Dylan as his coach and Muddy Waters as his caddy.
December 23rd, 2008 at 9:35 am
Jack ; sure that Dane would pay them for that sponsorship !
THE Plumber ; right on with Coco Ho BUT Josh qualified the piece as being a N.S. Rumours column from Stab . He is a responcible journalist and the real deal.
” WHY DO PEOPLE SPECULATE ?” Do not know but that is what 9 out of 10 people do while watching the 10th. person do the work , life is one big Cal. Trans. eh ….Merry Christmas to all …

The Quik house should be “cleaned out” here soon…. dudes like Reef & Fuller that do nothing but cost money… Should be interesting to watch unfold. Ya, it’s corpo, it’s rumors, it’s all “unofficial” still… but this is reality now. The communication era where news and rumors fly around the globe in real time, all the time! It’s still pretty gay though, ya gotta admit. I long for my youthful days at Newbreak, all black wetsuit, all white board and if you had a camera with you, you were not politely asked to LEAVE…

Quik is old! Dane is great! Andy is overpaid! Bobby is a big baby!
Reef is not what it used to be, Reef sold out long ago!
Quik? Give me a break! The are in Costco and Marshals.
Dane is worth every cent, Bobby is not.
Happy Holidays!

Reef is stupid to think they could keep Bobby for the same $ as guys who didn’t even make the tour. I would be pissed too is Reef slapped me in the face with the offer they tried to low ball Bobby with. Bobby did his job and then some. Doesn’t Top 10 in the world mean anything anymore? Good job Reef on supporting your riders. I guess that’s you get when your boss is Vanity Fair.
Dane is what the world tour will be in the future. Dane’s smart and I’m sure he’ll be right where he wants to be.

When you have guys that went to U of A (kevin flannagan) and the CEO who can’t even surf making decisions and running the ship you will have situations like this. Actually Flannagan is as bad as it gets too when it comes to surfing ability.
How can you call yourself a true surf company when your executives can’t even turn? Come on this is unbelieveable. This is a big reason why Reef has trouble grabbing share even though they have great products and had a great heritage. Look at the companies succeeding. RVCA (Conan), Hurley (bob), Quik (Bob, Volcom (Wooly). Reef is missing a smart, born and bread shredder to handle the helm of the company and give them credibility.
Get someone in there that can surf to make decisions.

Most. Stupid. Post. Ever.
This is not therapy. Go work your grudges out somewhere else.
December 24th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Reef? Who cares! That company sucks! It’s just not what it used too be!
Flannagan may be a smart guy, but Reef has become a joke. The general public still ask for it by name, The average surfer does not!
Oh, and sorry, but Bobby is waaaay overrated. He should be able to survive on $5 HUNDRED THOUSAND a year from Reef. The guy pulls in almost a million a year. I think that’s enough
for riding foam on a wave. When does the greed stop? Bobby is no Slater.
Look, the whole surf industry is going to change. The money will not be thrown around so much anymore. The ASP would benefit if the company’s would put more money into the TOP PRO’S and not the local PHOTO HOG who thinks he or she is the next world champ. It needs too change.

Gary@ Hurley , “Reef needs a shredder to take the helm”
You should apply , you already have a great cover letter in this Post
It is good to see the Action Sports Industry has not matured too much , yet anyway. Happy Holidays

those guys are jay

I cant believe I’m saying this, but I agree with Joe the Plumber. Coco making the womens ASP championship tour at 17 is incredible, and has gotten minimal press at best!! Now, I’m sure if Jordy or Dane did so, the industry would be buzzing…..
To me, all these guys are overpaid, esp in this economy…. With peeps losing thier jobs left and right, they shouldnt be so greedy asking for the high 6 figure deals just to surf and rock a certain brands clothing, wetsuits, footwear, etc… Lame. Bobby should be stoked to be getting paid to surf full-time PERIOD. I’m sure he could still live “the life” on 3 quarters of what he was making prior. Again, lame.

Hey look, Hurley is not any better than Reef. (Greedy Bob) sold out long ago. He also sold most of his in-house team out as well. Selling to Nike?
Bob’s obviously is very motivated by $$$$$$$$$ more then waves! …That’s O.K., Good on Bob. …I just won’t buy his (in my opinion) cheesy overpriced products.
(I know Bob surfs and is a very rich Christian, These are just business opinions).
I know Rob Machado rips and is a good guy, But I for one am sick of supporting his lifestyle! The guy should have won a title! (Again, nothing against Rob, He is a good guy.) I simply think some of these guys are waaaaay over paid.
…And the opinion about Hurley is just in response too Gary (who has a Hurley e-mail). I am sure Gary (if that is his name) is a good guy.
I also agree with Ya Brody, Quiksilver should be “cleaned out”. What a joke to be over a BILLION in debt. Again, they have been spending too much money on (some) half baked team riders. Also. They also have been very “top heavy” for many, many years and pay executives waaaaay to much money! I wonder if Quik will ask for a bailout? lol
It’s time for everyone to get back in the water and stop worrying about buying that “new BMW” every couple of years.
With Regards:

“It?s time for everyone to get back in the water and stop worrying about buying that ?new BMW? every couple of years.”
Maybe its time you stop caring how much they get paid and listen to your own words.
Uhh? who gives a fuck how much they get paid? Unless your buying the companies products constantly your not writing their check.
Bobby and the rest of the guys are talented riders. Although I do agree on them being lucky to even be able to surf as a full time job.
Bobby and the rest of the guys are just looking out for themselves.
Did we forget these were still just “rumors” don’t get your “wetsuits” in a bunch.
December 27th, 2008 at 11:26 am
First off, I do care how much they make! Why? Because I invest in the surf market and also am sick of company’s getting “bail outs”. The retailers are next, some say.
Maybe its time you stop worrying about other peoples opinions and using profanity in your responses.
Bobby is a “talented” surfer, He has worked very hard and been shafted many times by other company’s. But, that said, he is very “overrated” in my very humble opinion. Opinions are opinions. And that is my opinion.
Oh, And don’t get your “wetsuit” in a bunch! Why don’t you take a look around you and see whats really going on in the surf market. People are losing jobs left and right, Why? One reason may be that many of the athletes are paid way to much to surf a wave. (Many, Not All) …And buy a new “BMW” every two years! ha ha ha!!!
So, Sir, I do “give a f*$k how much “they make”!
Many Regards:
Erik!
December 27th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
no one cares about coco making the tour because no one cares about womens surfing.
bobby is not marketable, and thus does not deserve the money he wants.
no one should complain about ceo’s that dont surf when those companies are no longer private. when share holders become involved the soul is ripped out of the company, and all that matters is sales.
dane will surf for analog.
December 27th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
what makes everyone think Dane will ride for Analog ? Burton and it’s Brands have laid off way more people this past 2 years than Quik !
Agree with the other 3 points though. happy new year . josie

So lets get this straight, TRANSWORLD BUSINESS “The Leader in Boardsports News and Information”, is copying and pasting from another site and calling it news? Where’s the reporting? Who actually woke up in the morning and submitted this? Or do you guys have 12 year olds on Facebook doing your reporting now?
I heard TW Pubs are going to 6 issues per year.
January 21st, 2009 at 8:05 pm
I’ll surf for Quik! Target, Costco, and Marshalls dumped me.
January 21st, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Blah, Blah, Blah. That is all this place is. Shut up everyone and go surf. If everyone put as much effort in to there surfing as they do talking sheet on this site, the ASP sure would be competitive next year. Someone might give Slater a run for his $ then.
January 21st, 2009 at 10:00 pm
noticed your alias a lot lately R.M. , you injured or just in form for 09 tour …
January 25th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Who let Ricky Irons on the message boards? Stab broke the news about Bobby, TW linked to it guerilla style, got a ton of traffic from it and obviously got a healthy discussion brewing on the message board…guess desperate times call for desperate measures …Source Interlink is trading at $0.15/ share afterall. I heard Surfer was doing a deal with AARP ..free denture cream with a sub to the mag.
