2636 Broadway St, Redwood City
(other locations in Santa Cruz, Milpitas, Santa Rosa)
Owner: Jason Strubing

A 6,000-square foot shop, Skate Works in Redwood City is located about half way between San Jose and San Francisco and is one of the only action sports shops in the immediate area, according to owner Jason Strubing. Although it has only been at the Broadway Street location for about five years, Skate Works has been an institution in the city for 13 years, according to Strubing, who also owns Skate Works shops in Santa Rosa, Milpitas and Santa Cruz. The stores are mostly frequented by customers ages 14 to 25 year olds and a huge majority - close to 80 percent - are male, unless they are accompanied by mom, says Strubing. Here’s what products are moving in the Redwood City location:

BEST SELLING CATEGORIES

1. Skate Hardgoods
“It’s certainly the first thing you would see when you walk in the door here, and it’s a pretty predominant part of the store,” says Strubing of the shops skate deck wall.

Best Selling Brand: Girl
The shop’s skate deck wall generates steady sales, but the best selling brands are constantly changing, Strubing says. “This time last year, the top three brands for us were totally different. This year its Girl, Deluxe and enjoi. Last year it was Zero, Baker and Flip. But that’s pretty typical.” The shops self-branded product does well, too, he says.

Best Selling Sku: NA
“Some sell for shape, some for graphics, some for the name on the deck,” Strubing explains.”Pretty much anything within the 8-inch wide size is what were moving.”

2. Footwear
Skate Works also has a strong skate shoe display, which takes up another entire wall at the Redwood City location, according to Strubing.

Best Selling Brand: NiKe SB
This race is a close tie between Nike SB and Vans. According to Strubing: “It it’s based on number of units sold, it would go to Vans, but if its based on dollars it would go to Nike SB.”

Best Selling Sku: Dunks
This shoe is a popular one among many shops, and its no different at Skate Works. Nike Dunks are always in the No. 1 or 2 position as best selling shoes at all the shops’ locations, Strubing says.

3. Men’s Apparel
“As far as floor space, I’d say about half is dedicated to men’s apparel,” says Strubing about Skate Works.

Best Selling Brand: Volcom
According to Strubing: “Volcom is still kind of leading the charge there for us.”

Best Selling Sku: NA
“I’ve never really broken it down that hard when we do top selling reports,” Strubing admitted. “We’ve been looking for that one hot item this Christmas. In the past, it’s been Matix’s Asher sweatshirt, or Fallen’s
Cobra hoodie, but this year we are selling a little bit of everybody. But we have probably more Volcom product than any other brand.”
