On November 18, Jurors announced a guilty verdict in the case of 22-year-old Seth Cravens, who was accused of throwing the punch that proved to end the life of La Jolla, California surfer Emery Kauanui [shown below], 24, in May 2007. Cravens was convicted of second-degree murder, one count of making a criminal threat, four counts of assault, and a single count of battery. The jury found Cravens not guilty on several other counts of assault as well.

Neither family members of Cravens, Kauanui, or defense attorney Mary Ellen Attridge chose to speak to the media. Prosecutor Sophia Roach would not answer questions but had a statement:

“These verdicts are a message to the community that brutality will not be tolerated.  If there is a deficiency in the verdicts, it’s that the life of Emery Kauanui will never be replaced,” said Roach.

Cravens faces up to fifteen years in prison and will be sentenced on January 12.
