Freestyle Congratulates Bede Durbidge on First Place Win at Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (November 04, 2008) ? At the beginning of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, the focus was on the Brazilians followed by C.J. Hobgood and Taj Burrow but in the end, the spotlight was stolen by Aussie surfer Bede Durbidge. Freestyle is thrilled to congratulate him on his first place finish.

Going into this past weekend’s contest, Durbidge was in fourth place on the ASP World Tour ratings.  He surfed the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in Imbituba, Brazil with a focus on enjoying himself throughout each of the four rounds.  He surfed consistently, winning all of his heats making it to the finals.  The final heat came down to Durbidge surfing against France’s Jeremy Flores. Durbidge found his rhythm on the rights and won the final with a 17.76 to 9.86 finish.

Durbidge is now ranked second on the ASP World Tour and will compete in the Tour’s final stop, the Billabong Pipeline Masters held on the North Shore of Oahu, HI. “I’m so stoked,” says Durbidge.  “To be coming in second to my hero Kelly Slater is so cool.  It’s a great stepping stone in my career.”

“Bede’s game is really inspirational,” says Freestyle Marketing Director, Chad LaBass.  “We feel very fortunate to have him on the team and we look forward to following his quest to defend his Triple Crown title.”  The Billabong Pipeline Masters commences the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, both of which Durbidge is defending champion.
