I got my hands on this video last night. First things first—it’s not for everyone. But if you like the Tiltmode videos, Richie Jackson’s video part in And Now, and all things Louie Barletta, this may be the video for you. Also it helps if you don’t place a great deal of emphasis on pro-quality skating.
This video is actually four videos in one: Beez 1 (2004), Swarm! (2005), and Unusual Protocol (2006-7) comprise the Beez Trilogy, and Dropkick A Seagull (2003) is a documentary. I watched them all in one sitting.
These guys, who I believe are from Wisconsin, remain anonymous throughout the video, which I think is fantastic. I have no idea who they are. They skate all their local spots with a creative eye rarely seen in skateboarding. They aren’t filming sponsor-me videos, they’re just getting radical. It’s weird, watching the Beez videos I get nostalgic for people I’ve never met, and places I’ve never been.
You should find this video. I think these guys would be just as happy if you watched it to laugh at them as if you watched it to get hyped to skate. Also, it’s endorsed by your favorite pros. I definitely caught a couple cameos from Chris Cole and Chad Bartie, and the back of the DVD has praise from some rippers:
“This is the avant-garde of modern street skating.”—John Rattray
“Beez transcends all boundaries. Never before has there been so much energy and joie de vivre in skateboarding.”—Rick McCrank
“The end of days is nearer than we know, and Beez is the second coming of stoke.”—Keegan Sauder
If at the end of this review you’re still on the fence about buying or carrying this video, it says on the cover that “all proceeds will be donated to the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless and Hope House Milwaukee.” That should make up your mind.
Now, I have no idea how to find it. The guy who gave it to me said Kevin at Overboard might be carrying it, so check with him. If not, scour the Internet. Or borrow mine. Good luck.
