When students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo need to find an outfit to wear to a party, a deck to get them to class, or gear to hit the beach, the answer is a no-brainer. Mike Chaney first got Central Coast Surf shop rolling in 1975 when he was experimenting with some friends from his dorm at Cal Poly. General Manager Steve Carlson says the name of the shop can be deceiving because they also have a blooming skateboard business. Carlson dug deep to tell us exactly what his hot sellers are.

BEST SELLING CATEGORIES

1. Sandals

Carlson said San Luis Obispo is not only a college town, but also a cow town and that “sandals are smoking” for this country land shop.

Best Selling Brand: Rainbow
Rainbow’s men’s and women’s sandals have been killing it, and Reef is not far behind. “Rainbow rules the roost,” says Carlson.

Best Selling SKU: Rainbow 301’s
Carlson says when it comes to sandals at CCS nothing sells better than Rainbow’s 301’s. Carlson also noted that Reef’s Seasides and Butters models have been popular among the college kids, as well.

2. Decks

The preferred means of transportation for the students of Cal Poly are skateboards. “It’s long board mania up here,” Carlson says. “There is a lot of good, clean, new pavement up here.” Despite strict policing on skateboarding in the downtown area, Carlson says skateboarding is still the preferred way to get around.

Best Selling Brand: Sector 9
When students do decide to go to class, and it comes time to choosing a board, Sector 9 is the most trusted brand for the feat, according to Carlson. He says Arbor also gets a lot of representation on campus.

Best Selling SKU: Padang complete
Carlson says the Padang graphic bodes well for the demographic of this town.

3. Trunks

Trunks are a must have for anyone who is looking for gear to go to the beach and trunks are a huge hit for college towns, says Carlson.

Best Selling Brand: Hurley
“Leading the pack is Hurley,” Carlson says. “For sure behind them is O’Neill, in they come and out they go.

Best Selling SKU: Puerto Rico
Carlson says the Hurley Puerto Rico model is still dominating the trunk industry on the Central Coast. O’Neill’s Super Freaks are right behind the Puerto Rico’s.
