Heavenly Awards $120,000 in Scholarships to High School Grads
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - Heavenly Mountain Resort, Calif./Nev. – July 14, 2008 – Today Heavenly Mountain Resort announced this year’s recipients of the Heavenly Resort Community Scholarship Program. For the sixth consecutive year, Heavenly Mountain Resort will award $4,000 scholarships to five recent high school graduates, bringing the resort’s overall commitment to the Heavenly Resort Community Scholarship Program to $120,000. The scholarships are designed to help further the education of local area students.
“We are very proud of our scholarship program and what it means for the youth of the community,” said Blaise Carrig, Heavenly’s chief operating officer. “This is the sixth year of the program and we now have 30 local students that we have assisted through their college careers.”
This year’s recipients include: Bridgett Maestretti of Douglas County High School and Nora Esders of Whittell High School. Ryan Bugg of Douglas County High School; along with Karli Vath and Cierra Rawlings of South Tahoe High School were the recipients of the Heavenly dependents’ scholarships.
To date Heavenly has awarded 30 scholarships. The second round of recipients graduated (or completed their first four years) this spring. Among these is University of California Santa Cruz graduate Devin Blann, recipient of the Heavenly dependents’ scholarship in 2004. Devin graduated with a major in Business Management and a minor in Economics. He hopes to move to the Silicon Valley to pursue a career in business or marketing.
“I chose UC Santa Cruz because the campus was really nice and the UC school system is top-ranked in academics,” said Blann. “The Heavenly scholarship really helped out a lot and I am very thankful. It was enough to cover the entire cost of my books each year; books are really expensive! My college experience was fulfilling, I enjoyed the freedom and learned responsibility.”
Heavenly will host a Heavenly Resort Community Scholarship Program Luncheon to honor this year’s recipients at Friday’s Station in Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, Wednesday, July 15, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Past recipients will be on hand to offer pointers to the new honorees as they all mingle with Heavenly representatives. All recipients will be assembled for a photo opportunity at 2:15 p.m.
The Heavenly Resort Community Scholarship Program was established to assist qualified high school seniors with annual financial support to help offset the expense of a college education. Five scholarships are awarded each year to seniors coming out of Whittell, South Tahoe and Douglas County high schools. Over 80 students applied for this year’s awards.
