Why SIA’s Moving to Denver

In its most recent newsletter, SIA gave a quick run down on why its moving its trade show to Denver in 2010:
WHAT ARE THE MAIN REASONS SIA WENT WITH THE COLORADO CONVENTION CENTER?
1. Snow – We are finally able to put the snow back in snow sports. Snow sports such as Alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing are dynamic, active, fun sports. Our access to snow is now a mile higher than what it has been in the past.
2. Mountain environment – Colorado is home to many of the industry’s key influencers including ski/snowboard publications, manufacturers, retailers, athletes, and world-renowned resorts.
3. Economics – There will be overall decreases in costs for attendees and exhibitors such as hotel room rates, move-in and move-out costs/time, travel and entertainment, etc.
4. Room to grow – Denver has built a brand new convention facility that will allow SIA to increase booth size for growing brands and new categories to the Show.
5. Only show in town – SIA and our industry will be the only trade show in Denver during our Show dates.
6. Big fish, little pond – SIA SnowSports Trade Show will be one of the biggest annual trade shows in Denver.

Utah would have been so much better!
Except for the fact that then it would be in UT. The biggest bummer about leaving Vegas is the night life - Utah - come on!!
In my opinon, this is a big mistake. Attendence will go down. Vegas was the best, it was a tradition. I do agree that Utah would have been better than Denver. It’s a 45min. drive at most, for fresh powder from Salt Lake. Denver is a long way from the closest world class mountain. I love Denver, have a lot of friends there, but, count us out.
This is a great reason to increase the importance of our regional WWSRA shows. This move is NOT cheaper for anyone who doesn’t live in Colorado period! As a sales rep, I will look to book all or most of my business at my local show so that I don’t even need to attend SIA. Salt lake is the OBVIOUS choice for anyone who wants to incorporate on snow with the show. It smells like somebody got paid to inconvenience everyone else.
Way to go SIA you bunch of special interest sell outs!!
Echo’s stoked!
uh, how many companies are hq’d in colorado? i can think of a few, but i can think of more in utah and several that have talked about moving to utah. if SIA were really forward thinking they would have moved this clambake to utah, the snow is better and like duke said, WAY more accessible. you can take public transit (ie CHEAP, no need to rent a car) all the way from downtown to the mtn. or from the airport to the mtn, skip the show entirely. that’s a no-brainer.
SIA are dumbasses for not going to UTAH. So bummed on Denver.
Oh p.s., I wont be going now that its in Denver
vegas offers CHEAP hotels. Denver no so much. Traveling in and out of Denver Airport in Jan is risky, plus it is more expensive flights than Vegas. A lot of these “reasons” they are stating are bs.
I’ve talked to numerous retailers who are saying they will not be going. Its move is more designed for the ski apres crowd. The access to the mountains will be used by few…
IS it time to take another crack, albeit a stronger one, and show snowboard at ASR in Jan? i am curious of the responses…
I’d be all for it, but it’s to easy.. So I think the “powers that be” wouldn’t go for it. Increase ASR by a day, and we’d kill two birds with one stone. Retailer’s would get ton’s of work done, and MFG’s would save a ton of cash. Think of it, a Quiksilver/Mervin area, an Analog, Gravis, Burton snow area, DC shoes and snow boots, 32 and the sole-tech shoe brands, Vans , Volcom, etc. Nope, make’s too much sense, not going to happen.
I know that the Flow and Sessions booths will be very busy as usual. But it’s all good and I’ll see you in Newport!
One of the dumbest moves, no doubt.
Economics? It’s already been said that it’s no cheaper to stay in Denver. Also, flight costs from EVERYWHERE are more expensive to Denver than to LV.
Half of the industry is based in SoCal and drove to Vegas every year, now what? We all have to fly and rent cars if we want to go?
Is exhibitor space any cheaper? I don’t think it will be.
There’s a reason SIA will be the only show in town at that time…because everyone else is doing their shows in Vegas where SIA should still be.
You got that right!!
Denver’s biggest problem will be hotel rooms — just not enough of them for a convention of this size. The democratic convention in August will be a good barometer of what the city can pull off. Restaurants and venues for parties, etc. will also be an issue
i think it’s brutal.
The real reason the show is no longer in Vegas is simply that it didn’t make enough money to afford the Bay convention center. Additionally, there were no efforts made by the casino to lower the rate because skiers and snowboarders are not gamblers. We may be drinkers, but when compared to tech industries and alike we just don’t put as much into the casino as other conventions do.
Most Canadians went to SIA because it was a paid Vegas vacation. Now I’ll be going to the NSIA show in Montreal.
Agree with everyone. What a mistake going to Denver. Sounds like they are making this show cater the kooky ski crowd. A new snowboard only show would be nice for So Cal or Vegas.
As almost all have stated - this is a HUGE mistake.
The flight costs to Denver are at least triple for me, add to that the Denver airport gets snowed in regularly in Jan. and the “flights reason” is shot down.
Cheaper hotels than Vegas? Not a chance - stayed at the Hooters hotel a bit ago for $29.95 per night - plus we got a $20 food voucher each night and it is an easy walk to Mandalay. So the “hotel reason” is shot down.
Getting back to “on snow” - who cares! By Jan. I have been living in snow for 4 months - I WANT the break to a sunny destination.
Only show in town . . . um . . . who cares?
Big fish little pond again . . who cares?
I truly believe that the SIA got some huge kickbacks from Denver for this move.
I can see most people going once - then just going to regional shows.
what better reason to get my work done before SIA. I do not plan on going to Denver. The attendence numbers will speek for themsleves. Can you imagine the effects of the first snow in or snow out? Can you imagine the taxi fare from the airport? Bad Decision SIA. Hopefully, SIA will be around in 5 more years so that it can go back to Vegas. Anyone one been to the supershow (sporting goods tradeshow)? Exactly. But, at least they moved to the warm weather in Atlanta.
