Transworld Business received word today, June 12th, from several ex-employees of Future Snowboarding Magazine (FSM), that the company has closed its doors and will discontinue its print and online operations effective immediately.
According to our sources, who wish to remain anonymous based on the timeliness and delicate nature of the matter, the company informed its entire staff at its Solana Beach office today that their employment was terminated and the magazine was closing. The reasons for the decision by FSM’s parent company, San Francisco based Future US,were cited as financial.
No further details are available at this time. Transworld Business will update this story as more information becomes available. We wish the best to all former Future staff.

It is never a good sign for any of us to see a seemingly strong snowboard based brand fold. Future had some very talented writers and editors. Sure that the industry will quickly find places for them.
June 12th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Yeah, those guys were sick. Borderline geniuses I heard.
June 12th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
This Blows,
I thought more magazines the merrier, each fit a little niche inside of snowboarding itself.
Boo urns!
June 12th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
this truly is a huge bummer. those guys were doing a GREAT job and giving the other books a serious run for their money.
this is unsurprisingly reminiscent of what happened with Freeze Magazine–the corporate penny pinchers care more about the quarterly bottom line than the brands, the message or the lifestyle.
we shouldn’t exactly be shocked but we can hope that the other three learn from Future’s playbook–less attitude, open, easy humor and an everyman/woman voice.
June 12th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
f’ing brilliant those guys! nice work Colin. i know you’ll hit the ground running.
June 12th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
It is a rough eceonomy out there. Truth be told in large pub groups, if your not making dollars after this long, it becomes the only option for the parent compnay to exercise. There crew was very skilled, maybe just couldnt create a potent enough identity among the other brands Snowboarder, TWS, and Snowboard all having a more defined identity.
June 12th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
This really sucks, some of the best articles i’ve read were in Future and I loved everything about the mag. This is unfortunate. BEst of luck everyone at Future!
June 12th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
back to the old mediocre standard, kinda like snowboard mag
June 12th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
loved that magazine! loved it! it’s so disappointing to hear this news. maybe those layoffs at burton really are an indicator of things to come. Colin and tracey and the whole crew, you all did a tremendous job and i can say your pub will definitely be missed by snowboarders everywhere.
June 12th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Very sad to hear this news. But why didn’t they just keep the website running? I understand it’s hard for print mags to be profitable these days, but their online presence was unmatched (sorry, T-dub). I wish all the staff at Future the best of luck!
June 12th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Agreed. I feel for you Robyn. Hang in there girl. At least your future is still bright.
June 12th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Can’t believe it! Future crew tight. Dano, Farmer, Sully, Colin are some of my favorite homies. Good articles, design and layout, will miss you magazine.
June 13th, 2008 at 3:55 am
its will by canceled? (this company)
June 13th, 2008 at 4:47 am
It never had a chance
June 13th, 2008 at 7:52 am
They really raised the bar in the graphic design in snowboarding publishing and forced all the others to follow, Too bad…they seem to have caught up.
June 13th, 2008 at 8:44 am
There’s quite a few crack smokers out there saying that Future was one of the best magazines on the shelfs. It’s no surprise to me that it got shut down. Come on time to call a spade a spade. It was the worst of the heap.
Their business magazine on the other hand was something to rave about but the regular one???
June 13th, 2008 at 8:50 am
How you can bash someones opinion? I mean it’s one thing to say why you like something or not, but what bash what someone thinks? is there really a point? It’s ok if you didn’t like it, but it doesn’t mean everyone didn’t like it….
June 13th, 2008 at 10:30 am
aaron drpalin raised the bar in graphic design…
no one else, And if they ruined so many good covers with crappy newstand fodder graphics….Snowboard mag seened to be the design choice for design savvy folk.
Who does he aaron draplin work for?
June 13th, 2008 at 11:02 am
He’s the boss man at Draplin Design Co.
http://www.draplin.com
June 13th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Thats mag was like maxim. A few pretty pictures but nothing worth reading. Some of the people there might have been cool but the mag was terrible.
June 13th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
When it started they straight copied Snowboard-mags articles word for word. Open Apple C to the V baby!
June 13th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Ya but I think snowboard mag stepped it up once they came on the scene and FSM website blow snowboard out of the water. I suprise they didn’t try and sell it?
June 13th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
I agree future was like the maxim mag of the snowboard world minus the hot chicks. I enjoyed looking at the photos but the rest was nothing special. Website was worse.
June 13th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
i wonder how many people would have the balls to say this to their faces. Ya you didn’t like the mag, no reason to kick them while they’re down. let them go out with some pride
June 13th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Funny watching all of you make your comments about how much we sucked and how much you hated us The thing is, we are tried our best to make something that we loved to do… Snowboard. Comparing us to other snowboard magazines that have been around for over 20 years is crazy, it’s like comparing apples and oranges. What we did in our short three years was a great accomplishment. We made all of the other complacent snowboard magazines wake up and take notice. We are people to, we lost our jobs, we have families to support, and a project that we worked hard on is gone. Some of you must have never read it if you’re claiming not worth reading, you’re nuts. Colin Whyte is THE BEST writer in snowboarding.
June 14th, 2008 at 10:21 am
Future was making huge strides, and actually focused on normal things snowboarders could do instead of un-attainable pro-type things. I thought they were a great mag. They were quickly approaching #2 status and it’s a bummer to see them leave. Snowboarding publishing a a whole is incredibly stale and biased to who ever is is spending the most money this month and I hope that these other left-over mags do something to step it up.
June 14th, 2008 at 11:09 am
“A few pretty pictures but nothing worth reading”
…clearly you never read the magazine.
June 14th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
it was difficult to find on many mainstream newsstands - TWS, snowboarder and often snowboard mag were there - but no FSM…people have to see it to buy it - eps for kids w/ disposable income @ the market, etc…
June 14th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
The fact is, Future was a tremendous effort by a very talented edit staff, who were lookig for ways to push snowboard media in new directions. to a large extent, they accomplished this — personal perspective, alliances, and loyalties will largely dictate whether you agree. But to deny their influence on other publications to increase the quality and rethink their own editorial strategies is to deny your own media savvy and handle on the market. maybe all the content, as a member of the industry, wasn’t for you personally. you’d rather read about things relevant to your own life, i imagine. but i think on a grander level it touched a large demo of readers looking for something relatable to their own — and very different than yours — snowboard experience. my condolences to the future staff, you earned my respect (which i was at first reluctant to give), and hats off to a job well done, regardless of this unfortunate outcome.
June 15th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
i heard Future was coming out with a new mag called Back to the Future, hiring the hesh core guys who know whats up. guys who can work for love, not for cash.
June 15th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Yeah! Hardcore “authentic” guys with tattoos, tight jeans, plunging “V” neck tshirts, riding Fix gear bikes because they only concerned about being “hardcore”… Yeah right. This whole snowboard scene needs a reality check. You guys are so caught up in the latest fashion trend you can’t see straight. Most of you haven’t even been around long enough to even know where snowboarding came from. Nothing is cool enough and you have to make fun of everything because you are so unsure of yourself…
June 15th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
“Aaron Drpalin raised the bar in graphic design?
no one else…”
Thats a pretty tall claim there. You should do your homework before you go spouting off about s@#t you don’t know. David Carson raised the bar on graphic design, most everyone else has just copied him in some form or fashion… Draplin is a great designer, don’t get me wrong but far from the claim your laying down.
June 16th, 2008 at 3:09 am
Nice to read you mate! You are absolutely right. What I found in the industry is the lack of finance/accounts guys (bean counters!) but talent is there, definitely! All the best but still keep riding on!
A+
June 16th, 2008 at 7:53 am
Plenty of people told them that. Look at who didn’t advertise with them. I’m sure they heard “my ad dollars are allocated elsewhere” more than once.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:06 am
word
June 16th, 2008 at 8:21 am
thank you voice of reason. they were aiming to be the maxim of snowboard mags, and they used that crappy paper
June 16th, 2008 at 8:24 am
oh come on, it was mediocre at best. you could tell they were aiming for the short attention span crowd.long live frequency
June 16th, 2008 at 8:26 am
one guy does not make a magazine. do you want a cookie for your efforts?
June 16th, 2008 at 9:22 am
guys/girls, wake up. print is dead! the media business is changing dramatically, get ready to see more of this as their business models won’t support future growth.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:19 am
You’re simply an idiot and unfamilar with Future to liken the magazine to Maxim, label it “mediocre at best,” or claim it to be geared for short attention spans. Was Colin Whyte’s exhaustive profile on nicolas mueller for the short spanned reader? Was their non-biased board test Maxim-esque? If you’re going to be critical, back up your criticism. Future was the first snowboard mag to come along in years that i’ve been able to or actually wanted to read. it was smart, useful and entertaining, and actually geared at a older, more educated reader (which is the irony here). FSM, hats off.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:05 am
I made the maxim comment, but I never said I hated anyone. I just wasn’t into the mag or it’s contents. Sometime they might have had a good article, but most of the time I just didn’t think it had anything worth reading.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:56 am
I thought Future was good, they were not trying to be Transworld, SNowboarder etc. They were trying to reach that more mainstream customer, the 40 and 50 somethings who likes to get his/her shred on and doesn’t want to read all the nonsense in Transworld / Snowboarder.
June 16th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Print ad sales across all “board sports” pubs is way down this year. If I were the other guys I would be worried, not popping bottles.
June 16th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
so that’s why last year they were the #1 revenue producing magazine last year?
Burton 2 page inside cover- check
ride 2 page spread right after -check
salomon” ” -check
rossi ” ” -check
I could go on but they had all the advertisers other than the us army and oakley i think. At least they didn’t blow every sponsor with a “kits” pointless article every issue
June 16th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
The day Fran Richards left the Mag, it was over. He was the goo that kept those pages stuck together!
Long Live the King!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
I spelled my name wrong.
June 16th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
snowboard-mag.COM and snowrev.COM are the best OUT THERE4SURE
June 16th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
As a fellow journalist - but on the other side of the atlantic - Future was a huge inspiration; at it’s heart was a pure passion for snowboarding. A love for travel, the mountains and the beauty of simply riding snow, was all encapsulated in it’s pages. From stunning photography to epic travel tales, it was this constantly raised standard that drove myself, and several other collegues, to hope that one day we too, would be able to contribute to the title, while, pushing us to maintain such quality in our own work. When I heard the news FSM was no more I was gutted.
The riders themselves also loved the magazine: one certain, very high profile name was beyond stoked on a profile piece Colin Whyte wrote on him - despite having been interviewed a hundred times before, this one feature pleased him more than anything. Carefully researched, filled with colour and humanity, it was so refreshing to read a magazine that truly reflected the real experiences of snowboarding - those moments from which we form our own memories and love for the sport. Early days bruised but blissful; first seasons being skint and driving for hours to get that daily snow fix; to the more privileged, but still awe inspiring world of the pro rider/ photog / writer.
It’s a reflection of the publishing world full stop; the drive to digital tightening advertising budgets, decreasing magazine sales and mounting pressure on editors to constantly create and be dynamic. However, having travelled and ridden lots in the US and Europe, I can’t help thinking that if Future was a Euro magazine it would still be growing today, nurtured by it’s publisher and allowed to bloom into the success it had the potential to be. Look at Pleasure: would that sell in the US? Probably not, yet, it’s huge in Europe. Now we’ll never know…
June 17th, 2008 at 8:54 am
If they produced any sort of revenue they’d be in business.
June 17th, 2008 at 9:01 am
well first we had The Snowboarder’s Journal. then came Frequency. or the other way around maybe, but both of them out before Future. now TSJ and Frequency have joined forces… Jason Ford’s been riding on the industry’s fumes for far too long [and his interviews in "Let It Ride" were the absolute lamest] yeah I’ll say it to his face too, and have but he could care less. another vampire that sucked off the vein for 3 years.
and the “trade news” magazine was a “pay to play” deal, so all those product reviews weren’t really editorial.
snowboarding’s the new rollerblading and as the Joker would say “snowboarding needs an enema” Time for the industry to stop patting itself on the back it’s still only 30% of lift ticket revenues and hardgoods sales are shrinking every year, offset by softgoods sales to folks that will never even actually ride a snowboard. selling culture with the participation. pretty much what’s happened to all boardsports in the past 20 years.
Hard Core Bro said it well……..
good luck to all those that are now in need of work. but you were bound to have seen it coming too, and if not then your employer did you a dis-service.
June 17th, 2008 at 9:02 am
correction: “selling culture without the participation” was what I meant to say…
June 17th, 2008 at 10:04 am
i wonder why everyone is so hell bent over this. if you were on staff at future than you would have good cause to get yer little brains ticking, but for everyone who didnt lose their job, and instead lost access to the great photos that were submitted by top photogs amazing writing by tracy and colin and the rest of the staff, and vestals awesome work, you should prolly be a little bummed to see the sport you ‘love’ lose an intergral aspect.
WTF do you think is going on right now? a question you may ask yourself.
lets see, a recession, bud, and it may be spiraling into a depression. if corporations are collectively tightening their belts across the globe, and gas is at $5 a gallon, do you think you will be able to afford to drive up to the mountains and buy a $70+ lift ticket? not a chance, considering all you do is whine on the internet all day about your “expert opinion” in regards to the economy, snowboarding, writing, publishing, ad sales and revenue, content, and politics.
grow up,
and i hope i dont see you on the hill next winter
June 17th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Its amazing how angry some of these people are towards a magazine, for real? I am curious if any of these people even know what it takes to put any magazine together. It has to be a tremendous amount of work. Nicely put i wonder.
June 17th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
ahem
http://www.futureus.com/archives/2007/02/future_snowboar_1.php
June 17th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Hah! Fran, stop commenting about yourself! You know Colin, Tracy, Robyn and crew were finally hitting their stride… and, LMH, best ad babe ever!!! sorry we’ll be missing Keystone in ‘09. xoxo.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
I am simply amazed at the jealous and thoughtless comments regarding this topic. What a bunch of fuckin’ idiots….. I hope your stoked that you’ve made snowboarding look like every other douche bag sport out there with a bunch of haters. You’re gonna hate on a magazine that tried to expose your “core” sport in a different light ? You’re gonna “hate” on a magazine that both small and big companies supported with their ad dollars ??
I don’t give a good goddamn if this magazine was viewed as “the maxim of snowboarding” …….. you know what ??? Mainstream advertising allows the guys you worship….. the MFM’s, the JP Walkers, the Romain De Marchi’s, the T. Rice’s, the Danny Kasses even the new brigade like Lucas Magoon, Joey Sexton and even little Tyler Flanagan ….. all of those guys you wish you could ride like make a living off of this sport due to advertising and convincing you sheep to buy their products…..
I know what you’re saying to yourself right about now….. “This guy doesn’t know what the fu*k he’s talking about…. I’m core to the bone…. I don’t copy styles or tricks, I don’t buy pro models…. I ride for the love of riding……”
My answer to that is “cool” ! Welcome to the .5% of the snowboarding population. The other 95.5% of snowboarders (just like every other consumer) are influenced by riders, media, and hype. Get over it !
You think Danny Kass or the folks in charge of marketing at Grenade are gonna say “no” to an advertising opportunity that can expose their brand to thousands of new potential customers ?
Wake up…… this is business……. sorry that your love of shredding has turned into a multi-billion dollar industry…. but ask yourself….. are you mad ’cause your “core” and you see all these companies “selling out” ? Or are you mad ’cause you never did anything to stake your claim ?
F’off all you haters of Future….. they gave it a valiant effort.
What did you do for the sport of shredding ? Yah…. that’s what I thought.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Get it straight man. “frequency: The Snowboarder’s Journal” came several years before “The Snowboarder’s Journal”. Then future publications bought out “The Snowboarder’s Journal” and promptly shut it down… it never had anything to do with “frequency”, nor does Jason Ford. Get your facts straight before you go talking shit all over the place.
Condolences to the future crew, they are talented individuals and will be sure to find work elsewhere. It’s unfortunate that in a trough in the market, something’s gotta give. We can only hope the industry rebounds as it has before and print media will see better days so all of these individuals can find a spot to make magazines.
June 18th, 2008 at 5:27 am
That’s sad news…
But it is harder and harder to get a real mag goin’ on these days. Getting out there with a new name, surrounded by 15+ y.o. companies is kind of a challenge, and you’d better be veeery good to go over 5 years…
Good luck for Future’s staff, your mag was available in France and I did enjoy reading it.
On our side I just hope that our online snowboarding stuff will make it after its first year…
June 18th, 2008 at 8:03 am
well
i want my money back, where is my money for this “financial problem” i want it back….full refund yo.
making the snowboard industry look weak, should of never started…
June 18th, 2008 at 11:55 am
you’re an idiot dude. They closed 5 days ago. Did you even contact them yet to ask for your money back? Stop spouting off about who looks weak, when all you can do is bitch about your $9 subscription and make a pathetic attempt at calling out people that worked their asses off, you know you’re part of the problem, not the solution.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
I am sad for this sport that we all love reading this blog today. It doesn’t matter if you loved Future or didn’t, they were doing all shredders a service by giving us a vehicle to explore and day dream about being on the mountain when we’re not.
I’m a publisher, I know how f’ing hard it is too be fresh, and those guys did it for YOU. Not just for them.
When your subscription was $9 / year, and the postage cost is $1.80 to mail those out, you do the math.
They helped set the bar in this grueling industry, so instead of blaming gas prices or corporations, take a look in the mirror, what did you do to help support them?
All shredders should just be thankful that there are people out there that bust ass to give you some shred porn, put up their own dollars and work 18 hours a day to make it happen.
June 18th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Bummed to hear the news. I loved the crew over at Future mag…..thanks for all the good issues and I wish you guys the best in the future.
June 19th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
“Danny Kass or the folks in charge of marketing at Grenade”?????
Wouldn’t that be the same guy? Funny.
June 19th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
that was the most steriotypical ting everi thought the mag sucked. maxim? not sure, but it was wack
June 19th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
snowrev.com is dropping a mag this fall
June 19th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Oh yeah? Good luck with that…
June 19th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
I’m sorry there dude, but… what are you trying to say? Maybe start with complete sentences. Then focus on the spelling.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
YO the truth is, its not easy to make mags. Its fuckin expensive. Its a recession, and our dollar is down a whole shitload. So funny to watch all the ants runs for the spilled syrup and latch on like parasites.
Fact is launching a mag is hard. doing it with 5 million dollars doesnt mean you will make it.
Launching one with nothing, now thats a fuckin longshot homie.
Look around, see who is really living the dream, doing it for love, making it there lifestyle and job.
Some of you haters dont even know half of what it takes to launch a brand, get partners, investment, with nothing, just an idea, go a step further and do it with no corporate backing. makes you very accountable of every goddamm penny.
hats of to Future, they did a great job, Respect to all my comrades over there, James, farm, Kale, Lisa, jason, Colin, Crispin. Job well done. The thuth is that it had nothing to do with any of the staff, or the product, it was just timing, Snowboard Mag launched 1 year before them. thats it. There are many other factors that are also apparent but when we started snowboard magazine we knew that 80 percent of new publications magazines fail in the first 24months. FACT!
So mad respect to allthe homies over there at Future.
Fuck all you haters here baggin on people.
Its a hard competitive business out there and it takes passion, money, and unflawed execution, and partnerships, and deep relationships to make shit happen on this level,.
I am out Big ups to all the crews out there Snowboarder, ROOTS!
Transworld #1, congrats. remember to go out and buy stuff from core shops, buy snowboarding magazines, subscribe, get invloved! its your life, stop internet squawking and get out there and get it!
start another snowboarding title…I would not recommend it…
June 20th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Who is david carlson? Call me lame or biased or both.
Ever heard of a little company called , Nike, ALLy, Coal, UNion, grenade, TWs, and art director at SNOWBOARD MAG.
simple, uncluttered, clean, and fuckin goddam american made.
NO really who is david carlson.
and i am doing my research, i googled him.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
yeah i tell myself i look really goodd when i look in the mirror too. A press release about yourslef on your website is a little much dont you think…
June 20th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Carson. Not Carlson. OG.

June 21st, 2008 at 7:49 pm
you must have been recieving a different magazine. the one i got had one page interviews, product “reviews” which were just glorified ad shots (20 gloves on one page), shitty paper with bad coloring, and more deodorant adds than you could shake a stick at. FREQUENCY and SNOWBOARD JOURNAL (RIP) were great, SNOWBOARDMAG is nicely done and put together but still pusheds way too much product, TWS and snowboarder are fucking garbage.
June 21st, 2008 at 7:52 pm
there is no thing as a non biased snowboard test. the fact you think one exists proves you have NO IDEA what you are talking about. thanks FSM for the horrible secret spot exposes, horrible “night life” reviews and pandering interviews. at least FSM Trade or whatever was interesting
June 21st, 2008 at 7:54 pm
no “sport” has as much shit talking as surfing, skating and now snowboarding. nothing has changed with this.
June 21st, 2008 at 7:58 pm
remember, buy stuff and support snowboarding, er I mean my paycheck. yeah thats right, support me because i snowboard and i deserve it because i work hard. if you don;t, well then yeah, you’re a hater and you’re not in it for the love. buy stuff and support snowboarding (and me, Gary!)
get a grip fool
June 23rd, 2008 at 11:57 am

June 23rd, 2008 at 12:02 pm
thanks fat kook, for your kind words, love the snowboard industry
June 23rd, 2008 at 12:07 pm
what real snowboarders will miss about future, not just a bunch of disgruntled, over opinionated industry folk (sorry but that’s how so many of your comments sound to me)
http://www.shayboarder.com/2008/06/goodbye-future.html
June 23rd, 2008 at 12:11 pm
I LOVE snowboard rev and go there everyday, but if they are thinking they are going to make a magazine? man well that’s going to be really tough. if future had to close, which was a really good mag, then i don’t see another mag just popping up and becoming successful.
June 23rd, 2008 at 12:13 pm
This issue is getting way to many comments. So here is one, maybe if they were backed by Time Warner, they could still go on, like some other mags that i can’t think of right meow!
June 23rd, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Gary,
Nice work on the thinly veiled, backhanded “compliments” to the Future crew.
What you selectively fail to mention is that YOUR book was on its deathbed not all that long ago, until it was rescued by a ski mag publisher with deep pockets. Don’t act too high and mighty–just because you guys don’t have so-called “corporate” backing, doesn’t mean you aren’t on just as slippery a slope.
SMP (Storm Mountain Publishing–who started Freeskier and now owns Snowboard) is pounding the pavement like mad for ad dollars this season. As you said, mags are expensive and its just gonna get worse. The little guys are going to have to prove their worth this time around. Gone are the days of latching on like “parasites” and talking the South Lake wannabe gangster line. You guys don’t have the padding of Bonnier or Source Interlink to get you through the rough times.
However, as I’m sure you’ve already concluded, the death of your “comrades’” pub might be a nice little turn of events for you all.
Well, really, here’s the question:
Will the advertisers’ Future money go to you, or will they just pour any excess back into TW and “er”? Or, will they keep it in their pockets and pad their marketing budgets in favor of spending their precious pennies on a pub with less than 20k subscribers?
You need “passion, money, and unflawed execution, and partnerships, and deep relationships to make shit happen on this level”. Exactly right homie. So you better stop spewing and start working on those so-called relationships. You’re going to need them to get through this rough patch that our whole industry is in right now.
Big ups to Baker. He shuts up and makes it happen, you and your sales cohorts could learn a thing or two from him.
June 23rd, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Wow I have someone pretending to me…and i’m no one important…I’m nicer when I post so definitely not me.
Everyone has opinions on the subject of FSM…whether you supported the mag or not, your opinion. Some people really liked the mag, myself included and thought the articles brought by the staff actually added to the snowboard industry. Not all of us are industry people, just the regular snowboarder who wants more input to choose from. Sorry to hear that FSM is gone, I just hope the staff finds homes at other mags that appreciate them.

Mark get you facts straight. No mag or anything print is dropping anytime soon from snowboard revolution.

Man this thread really feels like it’s full of snowboard-mag people that hated everything about Future and some crazy guy at snow-rev. It’ll be interesting if they actually launch a magazine, hope they do more research before the actually put out articles, or maybe use some spell check, you’d think Centi’s girlfriend could at least pay for that too
I love what feels to be the hate from Snowboard-mag about how “lame” future was and not “core”. Wasn’t it just a year ago “For the same reason I started this magazine, is the same reason I’m leaving” Sullivan left his baby? That really tells ya something about the way things went a changing when Storm got in there. And copying articles? I’d like to see some proof of this. I’m guessing this mostly from Nunez as there were repeatedly blogs on their site bashing Future. I wish everyone at that mag was more like baker, chill, calm and respectful.
I hate that I’ve had to rant and bitch and bash, but I think if someones bashing for no apparent reason then they should be called out as well.

YAwn. zzzzzzzz.

Funny, i actually thought Future was doing better the past year, no hate to Future or its staff, SO hate all you want , I dont really care. And let me tell you that all ad reps are pounding the pavement hard for ad dollars, and they wont stop till they get the po po off the block…

The Comment by Gary is the best of this entire thread.
“Who is David Carlson? Call me lame or biased or both…”
OK I had to reply to this. Man you are a fool, PLEASE STOP before you make yourself look EVEN WORSE. Because your inept I have included the Wikipedia link for David Carson.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Carson_(graphic_designer)
This comment is the best… I will be laughing all day about this one.
“Ever heard of a little company called , Nike, ALLy, Coal, UNion, grenade, TWs, and art director at SNOWBOARD MAG.”
Thats cute, really cute…
and this just exposes just how uneducated you are
“NO really who is david carlson.”
Amazing! I am speechless.
Gary, crawl out from under the rock you live under and do your homework. Then think about ranting.
Thanks rvOlushun for the link.
God Help the Snowboard Industry, a couple of these poor folks need all the help they can get.

they didnt raise the bar it was a sloppy shit paper mess that tried to copy MAXIM of all things how does snowboarding and this culture relate to MAXIM mainstream bullshit it doesnt they didnt raise anything it was a corporate publisher coming in trying to make dollars off of this industry and thought they were genius publishers
whether or not they had a good crew is besides the point
the best mag out there is SNOWBOARD MAG you need to be true and passionate and authentic to make something with quality and future had none of that it was an investment for a corporate parent company and that’s it, props to Mark Sullivan and a true snowboard mag
June 29th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
well thats great you did your best but you would have been better off starting it on your own with your own crew
the part that didnt work was the FUTURE part if they had love for the sport and were truly passionate they would have never given up, point blank they just didnt get it they came from the outside tried to buy in without understanding this culture you can’t apply the same principles from SCRAPBOOK MAGAZINE to this culture and thats why they failed
If they had the true passion and love as Mark Sullivan did they could have made it
June 29th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
they really screwd over Fran thats a bummer
June 29th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Sullivan probably wished he didn’t let storm help them out, or else he’d still be making a magazine….

sounds like jaquet

I think you hit it on the mark. Distribution seemed to be the downfall. It’s easy to rip on any magazine, I could go on for hours about how $hitty Transworld and Snowboarding is (although the poster above was right, no such thing as a non-biased snowboard test). Future was a good mag, but it was harder to find than the other magazines. Distribution was weak, you had to really try to find it in some places.
They closed down still owing me a $100 too, bummer.

this really sux.. this was by far my favorite magazine… seemed much more mature in their writing than some of the others.

I agree. Colin Whyte is an amazing writer. I actually tore out all of his editor letters because I really enjoyed reading them.
FSM R.I.P.

What, the 4 issues, (newsstand @ 4.99/each) that you’ve already received from your $7.00 subscription weren’t worth the price you paid? Doing the math, which I’m sure you’re great at, that’s more than half of the subscription (there were only 7 per year). You probably read more in those 4 months than you ever did in high school YO! word, so I’m sure Future Publishing Company will mail you a check for $3.00 with a huge smiley-face sticker affixed to the back of the envelope. You must be some fuckin’ punk Minnesotan Joey or even a Texan Gaper. In which case, YOU are the one that is making the snowboard industry look weak. You’re the reason that Colorado resorts succeed, so thank you though… I just wish marketing departments didn’t have to bring themselves so low as to market Spring Break packages in places where the people don’t even know how to shovel snow, let alone shred it when they come slide-slip down chutes, pow fields, and cliff landlings during an epic pow year. So if you think that an idea that was new and progressive should have never started…??? then maybe Steve Jobs should’ve never continued fighting Bill Gates and producing the Apple computer that you used to post your dumbass comment, and the same iMac that I’m using to put you in your place right NOW. If you’re really concerned about it, I’ll send your subscription money, as long as you turn around and subscribe to a shred mag that IS NOT: Transworld, Snowboarder or Snowboard Mag…. and don’t say that there aren’t any (Allus CO Snowboard magazine is THE ONLY magazine dedicated to everything Colorado shredding and it’s lifestyle–something that Future did quite well at also- shared the lifestyle as it really is … i.e. Issue 3.3- “Move to the Mountains” or when they tried to publish “THE DRIFT magazine” which was an ALL FEMALE shred mag- they included it with one of the FSM issues for free! Imagine that- cute girls that love to shred… something that you’ll never get… GAPER

Check out AllUs Mag.
That mag is pretty dope, just keeps getting better and better. I picked it up at Wahoos, they have newstands there. Plus, they have parties with some Ill cats, like Common, Heiroglyphics, Dilated Peoples.
They giveaway a ton of stuff to their readers.
Super clean, really respectable magazine.

Wanted to renew my subscription this year and found out that the company no longer exists. This is the worst news I have heard in awhile. This mag actually had some good content in it along with lots of awesome eye-candy.
Sorry to hear about it and I hope something equally enjoyable hits the stands soon.
