Who Is Selling Direct Online, And How?

shopping-cart.jpg

Manufacturers selling product direct online to consumers is a touchy subject. If you don’t agree, check out the 40-something comments that were posted in regards to the article I did on Quiksilver launching its E-Commerce site in just over a week. The comments—for the most part—are not simply short-sighted shit talking. There are strong arguments both for and against manufacturers (in this case Quiksilver) selling products direct to customers. In fact, the feedback led me to post a list—and by no means do I believe it to be complete—of actionsports companies selling direct online. So here it is. As always, feedback is welcome.

Here’s a quick list of SOME of the brands selling direct online. If we’re missing some, please leave a comment (and a link to the site) in the comments section at the bottom of this post.

This is a no brainer, why would you not use Shop A Tron, and support your retailers VS stealing their sales.

We’ve been involved with the M.W.R.C. model with the Bodyglove people. If Bodyglove sells an item direct on they’re website, the custome types in their zip code and if that zip code is ours, we either get a credit, or a check. The credit is always the higer amount if you choose it. This seems like a perfect win-win for everybody, even if the manufacture’s only give credit. I haven’t been directly involved with the Shop a Tron model, but, if I remember correctly, and, please correct me if I’m wrong, wasn’t there some kind of bidding process or something involved after the purchase was made to determine who got the commission?

Duke,

There is no price bidding process (i.e. EBAY), no competition on price. ALL retailers get a fair chance to fulfill the order. The order gets assigned to the closest stocking retailers to the consumer.

It does look like it, but click on “buy now” and see what happens. It takes you to a list of states/countries and then to shops. According to owner Dave Lee “We did sell close out shirts online and we sell coffee online, but the hardgoods is definitely a touchy subject with dealers and we don’t offer that.” I tested this out and it looks correct

Brands and retailers have an option to work together as they always have in our industry or to be in competition with each other. Why not work together to grow the entire industry by supporting the core shops. We use the MWRC and have since 2003 and we know it is the right thing to do to support our dealers without having them do anything besides continue to carry the brand. Great job by transworld outlining the issues here to inform people they they have options.

Hey Josh , Nice to see some good old fashion distribution , damn the man , debate out there . Get’s the juices flowing. With an elemetary understanding of the worldwidesuperhi-wayintranet i could never comment on the pros or cons of it all. Seems , like most everything does , a numbers issue. So , i will tell of a few of the numbers i do know about but have never worked for Quik so do not know the specifics , they are probably on the website ;-).

1) Amount of revenue Quiksilver has generated for retailers over the last 30 years : uncountable
2) Amount of credit issued to and fronted by Bob McKnight and crew to struggling surf shops ; uncountable
3) Amount of money spent on in-sore , p.o.p. , promo and promo - co-op and consequently by Quik’s competitors : uncountable
4) Amount of surf trips , snow trips , dinners , parties spent on shop personel and consequently matched by other majors and minors in the industry ; uncountable

The amazing breed of surf shop owners that have shoulder to shoulder built the most exciting industry in the world know this and they know that though there are plenty of people trying to get their hands in the shop owners pockets ,Bob McKnight , Quiksilver , Billabong , Hurley , O’Neill , Rusty and anyone who got in this industry for love not money are not the enemy .

The Surf Industry just like surfing itself will survive this just like they have every challenge from Pacific Homes making redwood boards in a prefab home yard to Hollister and their fabricated surf heritage.

Maybe we should all breathe deep , go for surf and lighten up a bit ,and get back to task at hand .

In Peace and Hope …..

Rob is right in so many ways.. We’ve experienced all the positive things that Rob has mentioned from many companies like Quik throughout the years and are greatfull. We have to come together as an industry in order to survive. There’s a lot of people out there that want a piece of our pie, Quiksilver and the rest of the companies are the real deal. Bob is one of us, and he is on our side as much as his shareholders. I’m not trying to be a kiss-ass, but, remember when the companies opened Nordstrom’s? What about company stores? We all survived. This issue isn’t an easy one either, and a Damn hard pill to swallow, but, if we don’t evolve as an industry, the “outsider’s” will evolve for us, and ruin it for us all. This shit suck’s, but we will work it out. The new Quiksilver site isn’t perfect, but, I know for a fact that it and all the other’s out there will progress to be more and more retailer friendly. Companies will start using models like M.W.R.C. and retailers will get a “piece of the action”. In a down economy like all of us are experiencing now it’s really hard to think a company like Quik would try to make it even harder on us, on purpose anyway. Hate if you will, bury your head in the sand if you want, but some will prevail, I certainly hope that we, and many of my friends with retail stores do because this is the best industry in the world!

Thanx Duke , You and those like you on all coast are just who i was reffering to when i mentioned the amzazing breed of shop owners and vendors who started the whole shootin’ match.

The real enemy are the non-participating V.C.’S and money folks, big or small, who come running to the party because they smell money . That is their right , this is still America right ? ) but it is up to us to circle the wagons and fight . Not in-fight amongst ourselves , then they win !

You are one of a kind Duke , a good man worth knowing and a kiss-ass you could never be if you tried …..

Hope to see you soon …Love 2 all ; Rob

Shopatron works with over 500 manufacturers online and is the #1 provider of “retailer integrated eCommerce”. Shopatron provides the manufacturer with an online store so consumers can buy direct, but then the order is fulfilled and shipped by the closest stocking retailer or the consumer can use the “In-Store Pickup” feature and pick-up their order in the store.

This not only drives consumers into the store but gives the retailer what they want; which is to move existing inventory. All of the brands that use Shopatron are showing great success and supporting the shops is best for the long term health of a company.

I work for Shopatron for almost 4 years now and have seen this company take off from 70 brands using it to now over 500 brands.

If you want to learn more or talk give me a call (805) 547-2115.

Here’s a link to an article called “The New Retail Paradigm: Research Online, Shop In Person” by a Denver-based business writer named Lisa Everitt. I found it interesting.

While it does not pertain to our industry directly—it focuses on how consumers are purchasing music, cell phones, and homes—I think it does have some relevant take-away. Interviewd in the piece is John Horrigan, the author of a report titled the Pew Internet & American Life Project, which focuses on how consumers are using the internet. Horrigan says the Internet is a tactical shopping tool, “not a game-changer in people’s purchasing decisions. Its impacts show up in efficiencies in the search process.”

Horrigan told the Baltimore Sun: “The large majority of people are executing their transactions at stores, not online, even for music, a purely digital good.”

The report showed that while 56% of music buyers say the Internet has become an important research tool, only 22% actually purchased online. Ok, people are definitely downloading music for free, so that may not be the best example, but with cell phones 39% use the net, only 12% purchased online.

Just some food for thought.

Check out the entire article here: http://industry.bnet.com/retail/2008/05/22/

I’ll look into the additional brands listed above and revise the list accordingly.

Thanks for all the feedback.

THE DIFFERENCE SAY BETWEEN STUSSY ONLINE( WHICH I THINK IS FAIR TO THE RETAILERS THAT CARRIED THE BRANDS SO LONG) IS THHAT THE STUSSY SITE ONLY SELLS PAST SEASONS DIRECT TO CONSUMER AND NEVER CURRENT SEASONS LIKE QUIK IS DOING. I THINK STUSSY IS AMAZING FOR DOING THIS….AS A MATTER OF FACT I THINK STUSSY IS AMAZING AT MOST ALL THINGS THEY DO. THEY HAVE A GENIUS BEHIND THE WHEEL OVER THERE, THE OWNER, AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT HIS NAME IS FRANK SINATRA.

Duke…your comments are so heart-felt and honest…like Rob says, you are one of the true gentelmen in this industry, but I think I can do more push-ups than you. I miss ya and will see ya soon, hope all is well. Rob you are kind of going emo on us but I agree with your thoughts in general…the core brands ( Bob is king) have always supported the core retailers and vice versa. One last thought, Shopatron approached me a few years ago and I wasn’t patient enough with them to really listen to their proposals, at the time I was on the “only brick & mortar retailers should be able to sell on line”. Still not sure the Shopatron model protects the retailer, but times-they-definitely-are-a-changin’. Cheers to all the industry vets out there.
