National Forest Foundation Board Honors Companies for Conservation

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

national-forest-foundation-honorsOFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - VAIL, Colorado—Apr. 26, 2008—The National Forest Foundation (NFF) – a nonprofit dedicated to caring for America’s National Forests – will honor two Colorado companies for their leadership in conserving and enhancing our forests. On Saturday, April 26, at The Arrabelle, the NFF will recognize Coors Brewing Company and Vail Resorts for making conservation a priority and for their commitment to engage communities in natural resource stewardship.

Coors Brewing Company has a long-standing environmental commitment that focuses on protecting the forests’ most precious resources – clean, fresh water – by improving water quality in the communities where they work. Early on, Coors established itself as a forerunner in recycling, reducing waste and using alternative fuels. Last August, Coors teamed up with the NFF to host a Friends of the Forest® Day volunteer event on the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest. More than 40 Coors employees, family members and friends came out to install erosion control structures, build buck and rail fence, and plant wetland shrubs and grasses. The day was so successful that Coors has stepped up again this year with a generous donation to support another FOF Day project to continue restoring the Clear Creek watershed here in Colorado.

Vail Resorts is a company that is dedicated to supporting and partnering with the local communities where they work. This commitment extends to the natural environment that makes their locations so special. Vail Resorts has long supported conservation projects that protect and enhance watersheds, wildlife habitat, forests and outdoor recreation resources. Today, Vail Resorts operates the largest on-mountain recycling program of any ski resort in North America. For the second year in a row, in partnership with the National Forest Foundation, Vail has engaged five of its mountain resorts in the NFF Ski Conservation Fund. Vail guests contribute $1 per season pass, online lift ticket transaction, and for each room night at Vail’s Colorado and California lodges in support of community-based conservation projects. In the short time since the program’s inception, Vail has generated guest contributions totaling $551,000 that has been matched by $275,500 from the NFF for projects to restore and improve their neighboring National Forests in Colorado and California.

“The NFF builds its work from the strength of community engagement in caring for the forests and watersheds that enrich all of our lives,” said NFF President William J. Possiel. “It’s only fitting that we honor two companies that exemplify leadership in supporting the spirit of citizen- and community-based conservation, such as Coors Brewing Company and Vail Resorts.”

The NFF will be in Vail April 25-26 for a Board of Directors meeting. NFF Board Chairman David Bell will present the awards during Saturday evening’s reception, and U.S. Forest Service Chief Gail Kimbell – an ex officio member of the NFF Board – will attend the event.

Also in attendance will be Eagle County Commissioners Arn Menconi, Sara Fisher, and Peter Runyon, as well as Town Council member Mark Gordon, representing Mayor Dick Cleveland.

The National Forest Foundation is a Congressionally-designated nonprofit organization, dedicated to engaging Americans and communities in the conservation and stewardship of our National Forests and Grasslands, all 193 million acres. Skier Simon Dumont Sets New World Record At Sunday River

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Simon Dumont sets new world record on world’s largest quarterpipe, Sunday River, Maine.Newry, ME - On Friday morning skiing prodigy and X Games star Simon Dumont, of nearby Bethel, Maine broke the world record for highest air on a quarterpipe at Sunday River ski resort in Newry by executing a corked 900 tail grab and peaking at a height of 35 feet above the top of the quarterpipe. The 38-foot quarterpipe built by Snow Park Technologies with support from the Sunday River Park Crew is the largest quarterpipe ever constructed. Norwegian Terje Haakonsen held the previous world record at 32.5 feet.

“I wasn’t sure how this would all go down today with the wind and some healing injuries I’ve been nursing,” said Dumont. “As I was dropping down the hill into the run-in it just hit me that this would be it – the rest is history.”

The attempts began Tuesday morning when Dumont arrived on site directly off a flight from Sweden. Dumont began hitting the quarter pipe in the early afternoon when he reached heights as high as 28 feet, before drifting in the air and falling nearly 66 feet onto the snow below. Dumont’s hard hitting landing caused him to bruise his heel and aggravate an existing knee injury. After seeing the doctor, Simon returned to the hill on Wednesday, but was plagued by his injuries and was forced to recuperate for the rest of the day. Thursday was disrupted by high winds forcing the entire staff to delay their flights in order to provide Simon with one more opportunity to attempt the World Record.

At 9 a.m. Friday morning Simon showed up with his game face on and was ready for his final attempts. After an hour of repeatedly hitting the quarter pipe, at 10:12 a.m. EST Dumont hiked an additional 15 feet up the hill to gain more speed. Simon crouched into a tucked position going 55 mph down the in run and not only launched 35 feet into the air, but spun a 900 in the process (a trick where the athlete spins 2.5 complete rotations in the air).

“I’m really glad to have pulled this off in my backyard at Sunday River where I started my ski career,” said Dumont. ”The fans from the East have always been super supportive. That makes breaking this record at home even sweeter.”

Building and maintaining the worlds largest quarterpipe for nearly two weeks fell on the shoulders of Snow Park Technologies and Sunday River’s operations teams including Parks Manager Nick Roma, Mountain Manager Brian Jones, and Terrain Park Development Manager for Boyne’s New England Resorts Jay Scambio.

Surfboard Tracker Gives Shapers Peace of Mind

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

picture-2.png

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 April, 2008  - Shapers can confidently control their license arrangements  and the boards they produce down to the ninth degree, literally anywhere in the world. Surfboard Tracker works closely in partnership with shapers, manufacturers, and surfing brands who value their product and their customers.

SBT is also supported by the “International Surfing Association.” The Surfboard Tracker company was founded by Andrew Smith, a surfer from Wales following the theft of his quiver whilst on vacation in France. Andrew is a avid surfer and surfs all year round in the colder waters of the Northern Atlantic.

Andrew is so passionate about surfing. The whole ethos of Surfboard Tracker is about making surfing and other board sports an enjoyable experience by introducing old surfing values into a today’s society using modern technology. SBT is about a community, all contributing to stop the rogue elements in our sport. SBT is a recognized system  that makes someone think twice about stealing your surfboard or your snowboard surely it is worth it.

This exact ethos has carried the company through and has formed a niche market. SBT supports all board sports from the manufacturer, retailer to surfers the life and sole, even to the extent that some shapers are developing their business model  based around SBT with top surfer like Pancho Sullivan taking the boards with the system and local groms in Sydney taking boards with the SBT system, it just goes to show how far and wide SBT has expanded.

SBT gives shapers traceability of their product. With the whole board industry under pressure from external sources SBT offers a relief valve to maximize profitability for shapers by minimizing the production of licensed abused boards. Frequently shapers place orders with licensed operations not entirely knowing how many boards have actually been produced..

The SBT system places simple controls in this environment by issuing the licensee a number of SBT implants for a designated amount of boards and managing them via an online secure system. Any surplus boards produced with out the SBT implants are and can be considered fake.

The multi lingual system allows shapers to authenticate their product the moment it is implanted with SBT. The added bonus is that the consumer can be sure about his product when purchased and register its ownership.

SBT is expanding across Europe ,UK, Australasia, South America, USA, Asia and South Africa and are currently looking to expand their operations taking up residence in to Hossegor later this year, with Newport Beach, California and Byron Bay, Australia on the radar.
