Sole Tech Announces Eco-Initiative Goals: No Carbon Footprint by 2020

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Not only are Sole Tech’s shoes eco-friendly, the company’s headquarters in Lake Forrest is making huge strides to become completely carbon neutral by the year 2020. What does that mean for skateboarding? Pierre Andre Senizergues, owner and CEO of Sole Technology, won’t hesitate in his response to that question.

“One thing I’ve noticed over the years is how much better I felt when I was skating in an area where the air was pure, so it was the initiative of my company to do something about it here at our headquarters,” Senizergues said Monday April 21, from his bright office, which boasts floor to ceiling windows, recycled wooden particle board walls and recycled limestone flooring. “It’s surprising to me as a skateboarder that not more companies are doing this.”The view from Pierre’s office. (He made that giant shoe out of cardboard for ASR 20 years ago).

Sole Technology officially unveiled its first-ever Ecological Footprint Audit - a program designed to monitor the company’s amount of environmental waste and consumption. The company also introduced the first full-time Environmental Affairs Manager, Roain Atwood, and couldn’t have picked a better time to make the announcements, with Earth Day festivities in full swing.

“It’s not just the product itself, it’s the whole process, A to Z,” Senizergues said of his company’s newest facility, which was built in 2003 with the environment in mind. The bathrooms are all equipped with advanced technology that allows for waterless urinals, while each toilet has a dual-flush feature that the company hopes will help conserve water by 40 percent.

Even more impressive are the 616 solar panels Sole Tech has on its roof, which generate energy for the building and the company’s two additional facilities across the street. Although using solar energy was an investment - $1.4 million - it will eventually pay for itself, according to Senizergues. The company received a 50 percent rebate from the government for taking the eco-friendly route and oil budgets will be reduced significantly.

But when it comes right down to the numbers, the company’s audit showed an overwhelming culprit for its carbon emissions: footwear production.
The roof at Sole Tech is equipped with more than 600 solar panels.“We really did want to take responsibility for the manufacturing end of things,” Atwood said. “We were concerned with the quality of the energy being used at our plants in China; if we were using coal fire-powered energy versus natural fire gas, then that is less efficient. Ultimately, as a whole, we want to integrate as many sustainable compounds into the process without compromising the product and still keeping the price reasonable for consumers.”

Several strategies the company will implement include updating outdated power mains at its facilities, which will help conserve up to 20 percent of energy used, as well as reducing the amount of wood pulp used for shoe boxes by 30-35 percent and reusing boxes when possible, according to Atwood and Senizergues.

Shoes now have recycled rubber soles and recycled plastic shoelaces, and boxes will list products’ “transparency facts,” or carbon footprint.

“It’s always been the goal of Etnies and Sole Tech to make shoes that last,” Senizergues said. “Consumption is a big problem. When you make something that lasts longer you don’t need to replace it as much.”

Big Wave Surfer Woody Brown Dies at 96

Monday, April 21st, 2008

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 April, 2008 - KAHULUI, Maui — One of the world’s most renowned surfers died last Wednesday at Hale Makua, Kahului, The Maui News reported. Big wave surfer Woodbridge Parker “Woody” Brown was 96.

“Woody Brown was one of the first and greatest icons in the history of surfing,” Sen. Fred Hemmings said Friday. “He was the essential surfer, an iconoclast: extremely independent, futuristic and, most especially, healthy,” saidHemmings, the 1968 world surfing champion who inaugurated the world professional surfing circuit in 1975, “which explains why he lived for 96 very productive, wonderful years. And I only hope more of us who call ourselves surfers can live the way Woody lived. Sad as anyone passing is, what a joyous life.”

Woody Brown was born Jan. 5, 1912, in New York. At age 23, he struck out with a new bride for the West Coast and was among the first surfers off San Diego, building his own hollow plywood surfboard in 1937. When his wife died in childbirth in 1939, he again headed west, to Tahiti, but got stranded in Hawai’i because the government wasn’t issuing visas right before World War II.

He went on to surf with all the greats in waters off Waikiki, the North Shore of O’ahu, Makaha and each of the Neighbor Islands, where he was the walk-up house guest of welcoming Hawaiian families. Buddies called the lanky waterman “Spider.”

Brown built the prototype of the modern catamaran in 1947 and pioneered taking Waikiki tourists for catamaran rides, which provided his living for four decades. He outlived two wives, and fathered two daughters and three sons, the youngest of whom is 19. Brown, who surfed regularly until he was 90, rubbed shoulders with Charles Lindbergh, Duke Kahanamoku and old Hawaiians who lived the life of a former era, he said.

“He was just a lot of fun to be out surfing with,” recalled Terry Quisenberry, a surfer, paddler and fence builder in Haiku. “I could always tell it was Woody, sitting up on his green board, paddling along. He really enjoyed surfing with everyone because his enthusiasm was just so contagious. He’s also very nice to everyone.”

9:Fish, Black Surfing Association Announce 5th Annual Soul Surf

Monday, April 21st, 2008

picture-2.pngOFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - April 8th, 2008 (Santa Monica, CA) – 9:Fish Surfboards, the makers of “Neo-Retro” fish-style surfboards that catch more waves, and the Black Surfing Association (BSA), promoters of inner city and minority surfing have teamed up to organize the 5th annual soul surf amateur competition and “Fam Jam” starting Sunday May 4th, 2008 at 7:00am sharp at Leo Carillo State Beach (Secos) in Malibu, CA.

A new part of this year’s contest is a “Twin Fin Fish” event for surfers to showcase their skills outside the traditional long and short board standard events.

“9:Fish boards don’t fit the conventional mold, so of course we are excited to put on a non-conventional surf contest,”  Wes Negus, Co-Founder of 9:fish Surfboards, said.  “We are really pleased to work with the BSA to organize such a positive event.”  The BSA has long been promoting surfing among youth and inner city kids in order to bring attention to minorities within the sport and to help prepare surfers to eventually compete at the pro level.

The competition will display the talents of over 60 contestants with around 400 spectators.  The registration fee is $25 in advance and $35 day-of.  Throughout the day, various twin fin fish, long and short board heats will last 15 minutes each, with 20 minute final rounds. Food, music and various sponsor tents will also be at the beach, creating a fun environment for spectators.

The 9:Fish Surfboard movement was started by Wes Negus and Sunny Trinh, two surfing engineers who combined their knowledge of surfing and engineering to design “Neo-Retro” fish-style surfboards that flat out catch more waves.  9:Fish’s boards, each named for a different fish (Seared Ahi, Yellowtail, Clownfish, Hammerhead) can be found at Val Surf, Santa Monica Surf Shop and other distinguished surf retailers worldwide. Check out www.9fishsurf.com for more details.

Black Surfing Association’s goal is to expose and encourage people of African ancestry to witness, experience, participate and enjoy the ancient oceanic activity of surfing throughout the oceans and seas of the world. And, with this exposure and participation, the BSA will demonstrate, educate, and help to implement aquatic skills, ecological awareness and activism, and overall athleticism. Ultimately, it is the BSA’s goal to expose and advance the sport and activities of wave-riding in the Black communities while generating well-being, harmony, and heightened awareness amongst surfing individuals, clubs, organizations, businesses, and related media interest groups. We also encourage and support our members to compete and represent Black people and the Black Surfing Association with good sportsmanlike conduct and ethnic ambassatorism. Monday, April 21st, 2008

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE - San Clemente, Calif., April 18, 2008 — The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 4-Star 6.0 Lowers Pro and Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior will bring 192 of the world’s best professional surfers and 32 of the world’s best professional juniors to Lower Trestles, April 29 to May 3, 2008. The event will unite top seeds, local and international talent, wild cards and even one female vying for an increased prize purse of $80,000 for the WQS and $10,000 for the juniors, as well as, valuable ASP points and the possibility of a Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series bonus.

6.0 Lowers Pro Athletes
ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) vets Taylor Knox (Carlsbad, CA), who won the event in ’94, and local favorite Chris Ward (San Clemente, CA) will come in as top seeds this year. They’ll be joined by fellow WCT surfers Adriano de Souza (BRA), Ben Bourgeois (Wrightsville Beach, NC) and Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), currently off of the Tour due to injury,

2006 Surfbout champion Dustin Cuizon (HAW), as well as, current WQS points leader Patrick Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), Cory Lopez (Dana Point, CA), Shea Lopez (Daytona, FL), Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA), Joel Centeio (HAW), and 2005 Macy’s California Trifecta Champion Asher Nolan (Neptune Beach, FL) are also top seeds.

Other local favorites and top contenders include 2006 Macy’s California Trifecta Champion Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, CA), 2007 Macy’s California Trifecta Champion Adam Virs (Ventura, CA), Mike Losness (San Clemente, CA) and 2007 fourth-place finisher Shaun Ward (Huntington Beach, CA), who was the only non-WCT surfer to make it to the final last year.

Nike 6.0 has extended wild cards to three young guns who are sure to represent the up-and-comers in a major way. The event’s only female, Carissa Moore (HAW), and Evan Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL) will be seeded into the Round of 64, and Koa Smith (HAW) will debut in the Round of 96.

“I feel extremely honored and thankful that Nike gave me an opportunity to surf one of my favorite waves in the world,” Carissa Moore said. “I am going to try to do my best to surf at a level deserving of my wild card spot.”

Other up-and-comers to watch for include Oakley Pro Junior graduates Nick Rosza (Oxnard, CA), who claimed the 2007 Oakley Pro Junior Trifecta championship, Brent Dorrington (AUS), who won the Trestles Oakley Pro Junior in 2007 as a wild card entry, and Mitchell Coleburn (AUS), who established himself as a premier talent in 2007’s event by advancing to the semi-finals in both the WQS and Pro Junior events.

Oakley Pro Junior Athletes
With an increased Trifecta bonus and qualification spots into the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge added perks, the 2008 Oakley Pro Junior field is impressive. As the only competitor who made it to last year’s final who hasn’t aged out of the division, last year’s third-place finisher Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA) returns as the number two seed. 2007 Macy’s California Trifecta Oakley Pro Junior runner-up Adam Wickwire (Satellite Beach, FL) will enter the event as the top seed.

Rounding out the top five junior seeds are three East Coast talents: Travis Beckman (Vero Beach, FL), Cody Thompson (Jacksonville Beach, FL) and Blake Jones (Melbourne Beach, FL).

Oakley wild card spots have gone to Shaun Jobert (ZAF), who won the Durban Oakley Pro Junior last month, and Sebastian Zietz (HAW).

Others to watch for include 2007 Santa Cruz Oakley Pro Junior champion Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA) and super-local-grom Riley Metcalf (San Clemente, CA), who is each also in the round of 192 in the WQS event.

Formerly known as the Body Glove Surfbout, the 6.0 Lowers Pro will continue to serve as one of the most touted events on the ASP WQS schedule due to its premiere location and history of groundbreaking competitive surfing match ups. In 2009 and 2010, the event will upgrade to a 6-Star, making it one of only two North American 6-Stars, helping to elevate the relevance of the ASP North American leg of the WQS and ensuring that the legacy of competitive surfing at Lowers continues to grow.

The Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series (an ASP North America Specialty Series) was formed in 2005 to strengthen surfing in America and has added additional cash and prize incentives each year. For 2008, the series unites the 6.0 Lowers Pro, the Oakley Newport Pro (Sept. 16-21), and the O’Neill Cold Water Classic (Oct. 21-26) under one banner, as well as, an Oakley Pro Junior at each of the three stops.

The Trifecta Series provides surfers with an opportunity to earn crucial points towards the ASP WQS and Pro Junior end-of-year rankings, which factors into advancement to the coveted ASP World Tour and ASP World Junior Championships. Additionally, the series will award a $33,333 bonus to the surfer who takes first place in all three WQS events. Should one surfer not win all three events, the overall points-winner will receive a $10,000 bonus and second and third will receive $3,500 and $1,500, respectively. Juniors will vie for an additional $10,000 bonus.

All 6.0 Lowers Pro action will be viewable online with streaming video and live scoring at www.nike6lowerspro.com.
